I watch this every year not last year and I play it as loud as I can I open the outer doors and sing out loud land off hope and glory my neighbours must think I am mad but it makes me feel good xxxx it Elgar great I hope Britten is still great all ways xxx

For one guy to arrange and perform this piece for organ is a monumental achievement. His dexterity - especially feet - is extraordinary - but the vision to arrange a piece like this is incredible. I was at the last night of the proms as an eight year old -in the 60s - and sat next to one of the 32/64 foot pipes as this piece was played. The thrill when the pipe sounded right next to me has never dwindled. Fabulous to hear the whole piece played by one man. Amazing !!

@Simon Clover The large front pipes are particuarly noteworthy, being the 32' Contra Violone on the Great Primary Division and also borrowed on the Pedal. They have a very high tin content, which makes them rather unique. They were also extended in length to make them look more impressive, so that bottom C is just over 40 feet in length. When the organ was rebuilt in 2002-04 the organ builder John Mander wanted to clean the pipes back to their original bright and shiny appearance. One small section at the rear of one of the pipes was cleaned to show how they would look. The pipes are not painted, they are simply oxidised through dirt and cigarette smoke. The organ Consultant at the time (who I will not name) refused to give his permission to do this. Such a shame.

It's criminal that these instruments are locked away and rarely used. You can't go and play it for a few hours, even with an FRCO from round the corner! So it sits, locked in an empty hall gathering dust whilst you're told to get lost. And it's the same all over London and probably beyond. People aren't taking the instrument up because of access. I'd love to book two hours with it, I'd even pay a running cost based fee. This should be an inspiration to young musicians, but in reality they'd be lucky to get their hands on a local instrument. That said, it's the best recording of this instrument I've heard.

Way back in 1996 at the AGO (American Guild of Organists) National Convention in NYC, I had the pleasure of meeting and giving a ride to (I drove to NYC from Florida in my car as I'm from NYC and wanted the convenience of having my car to get around) a well known British organist who I won't identify. In our conversation, I remarked how some organists in America are rather selfish and won't allow others to play the instruments in their church and this organist said that it was worse in England as I asked how easy would it be for me to access organs there whenever I finally made it there (I've yet to go). That news saddened me.

You hit the nail on the head. Its the story of my life. Never allowed access growing up in NYC, but I managed to crash a number of organs over the years several times over. The people that control the organs have no appreciation for music or knowledge of music. Just stupid peasants who exercise their power over the powerless.

@@mudgebauer That's sad and I'm sorry that you were denied access. What era was that? I started playing in 1968 and made my rounds to as many churches in NYC as possible while growing up there and I at this moment don't remember ever being turned away and if I was, I've forgotten about it by now. I've played every major organ in NYC before moving out in 1987. I played St. Thomas 5th Ave at age 15, Riverside at age 16 and three more times afterwards. Upon my subsequent trips home every summer to drop my son off to hangout with his grandparents for the summer, I played St. Patrick's cathedral and many more as I was very lucky to have met kind and generous organists like Fred Swann and Gerre Hancock. I also started playing SJD in 1974 after Alec Wyton retired. I was lucky indeed. The last significant organ that I played before moving was the largest in NYC at St. Bartholomew's in 1986 and after that experience swore that I'd never go back there until their asswipe organist either retired or dropped dead (he finally retired about 5 months ago) as he was a real prick. It sounds like you ran into total anuses and that's sad because they don't OWN those organs. I hope that things improved for you. All the best to you.

I've been trying to play since I was 14. I've never had any trouble with access to local instruments, even the local town hall, so I must be fairly lucky. I think some places may shy away possibly due to bad experiences in the past, some people who would like access can be VERY pushy and demanding about it. I just hope they realise that we aren't all like that.

@@OrganMusicYT It very well can be hit or miss. Organists are THE snobbiest musicians in probably the world, but definitely here in America and they're sickening with their behaviour as they turn off and thus turn away so many people from the profession. I've met enough of them in my 51 years of playing the organ. I can't stand them and usually stay the hell away from them and I'm talking about those flighty guys as most female organists I've met were exceedingly cool.

Never heard this organ played so well before and such a fitting piece to play. Some years ago I visited Lincoln Cathedral and there I found a little keyboard set into the wall on either side. I expect some of you will know the proper name for these but I was startled to find that they played. I tried to play Trumpet Voluntary by Purcell but felt a tap on my shoulder. It was the cathedrals resident organist who said "You don't want to try playing that on that, come with me". He took me up to the organ loft, fired up the organ and played it there. What a gorgeous sound, I wonder if anyone else has played the Lincoln Cathedral organ?

Bloody brilliant! Beautiful arrangement Johnathon, I've never heard it on the organ before and as an ex organ builder that's the culmination of a life's work for a builder. Proud of what my old firm did to it in the 2004 rebuild. Last time I was at that console turning for the organist in the 1986 Redbridge schools choral festival the action was as noisy as hell as H&Harrison had put the pressures up so high, also, wind was leaking everywhere you needed a coat on, it was so windy at the console! I think Mander's made a brilliant job of the rebuild. The organ sounds magnificent and I bet Father Willis is looking down with pride on his original creation.

Stunning. A long time ago when the Salvation Army had one of the concert. The choir singing. The note got stuck. I went to concert. I was about 15/16 years old. Now in my sixties. Always remember. The beautiful sounds, sometimes vibrate through your feet :) love Janet x

Many years ago I played Double Bass with our County Youth Orchestra at one of the Schools Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Our Director of Music conducted the first piece we played which was William Tell Overture. We then played this piece that Jonathan is playing, but we were conducted by a guest conductor. During rehearsals our Director asked if he could play the Organ for the Concert, the answer came back as NO, he then said well I am a FRCO and an RCO examiner, and I used to be Assistant Organist at Canterbury Cathedral and before that Peterborough Cathedral. He played the Organ for the Concert.

Now we've finally seen Jonathan at the second largest instrument in the UK (if I've got my facts correct) we eagerly await his presiding over the ultimate Great British organ - Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. Liverpool Anglican has more pipes, Royal Albert Hall has one more stop so it depends how you quantify large. I hope he does a Liverpool mini series, because they are all superb.

They are basically as big as each other. Its only by a smidgin that Liverpool is 'bigger'. RAH certainly has some colossal sub bass flutes (32s) on the front, which are some of the biggest in the world.

@@iwasglad122 I would go by number of pipes as well. I suppose it is open to debate, you can have 1500 pipes and get 140 stops out of it with unification and duplexing, so I suppose that is one reason people tend to go for the number of pipes when measuring how large the instrument is.

The number of pipes is a definite quantity whereas the number of stops can vary for a given number of pipes with borrowing etc. And the quality of an organ of course has nothing to do with size. The RAH represents a happy marrying of superb quality with large size. I'm anxious to hear Jonathan in Australia. In Melbourne (Town Hall) we have a similar marying of quality and size as with the RAH (and the same size within a few pipes). Sydney Town Hall is a little smaller but has the honour(?) of a genuine 64' pedal rank (not resultant). And there are many good smaller instruments. We aren't quite as blessed as the UK, nor Europe (sorry, I think of them as separate), but there's enough!

A grand piece of English classical music on a grand English organ. The Royal Albert Hall organ is one of the greatest examples of English baroque organ building. An organ suited for such grand music.

WOW! I agree with ALL the comments I have read, AND, may I add, that it was WONDERFUL to see more beautiful angles of the RAH INTERIOR then we have EVER seen in other concert RECORDED productions INCLUDING the PROMS !!! My partner and I visited England in 2007, we were there, but COULD NOT enter the hall because on that date, cirque du soleil was performing and with all the equipment in the hall, the staff did not want us getting hurt on 'things'..... Well, I got some photos of the office area and of course many of the exterior as a keep sake from back in that day and our lovely vacation in the UK (((O:

Thank you for posting this. Great performance. I am surprised by how little reverberation there is in that hall. I suppose with all the cloth-covered seats, sound must be absorbed quickly. This being said, I bet that having less reverberation means the organist really has to be on top of their game as it is easier to hear every note, right or wrong. Well done and thank you again for this video and all the videos you and your brother provide. I look forward to seeing you live someday.

The building was innovative in its day - a glass dome to the top - but the acoustics were terrible! The "mushies" (mushrooms) - those flying-saucer-shaped things hanging from the ceiling - mostly sorted that; I think they were fitted in the 1970s.

Wonderful to hear this magnificent organ. There should be more recitals throughout the year on this organ. Did attend Olivier Latry's recital as part of the 2019 Proms.

That would have been wonderfully. I've been transported by his improvising at Notre Dame, St Sulpice (both of those on YT) and St Patrick's Basilica in Melbourne, and Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo (both of those live recitals).

The front pipes are the 32' Contra Violone, the tallest being 40 feet in height. Being made of over 90% tin they would be hugely expensive to make today. If cleaned they would be bright and shiny.

Just captivated by the sounds &majesty of theRAH. As I sit here in Brisbane,Australia I think of my childhood in Gloucester, which cathedral has its own wonderful organ, miss the Christmas concerts. Magical memories, thank you for a great you tube.

Yes the Gloucester organ is superb. Recently expanded with a 32' reed positioned within the Quire screen, and some large new mutations including a 4 4/7 septieme which emphasises the 32' sub harmonics. There is also a new bright 8' reed on the solo division. Living in Brisbane both Gloucester and England must seem far away. Still the sunny Brisbane weather has compensations.

Oh my...!! What a fantastic rendition of such a well known piece. I've attended various concerts including this mighty instrument over the decades - both before the restoration and subsequently - I've never heard it played with such precision and with a sense of what the music being played is actually about! I remember hearing this organ just before it was restored and immediately after and of course the difference was like night and day. Pre restoration it was like a wheezing asthmatic pensioner with limited capabilities - after restoration it had the power yet subtlety fully warranting it's "Voice of Jupiter" moniker. The RoH is of course notorious for it's acoustic deficiencies but over the years you get to learn where some of the sweet spots are and once in them you are rewarded with a balanced and airy sound - a shame it's pretty hit and miss where they are depending on layouts and placings for each performance! Thanks again for a great arrangement and performance.

Kudos - once again! Stunning performance and one only wishes that more compositions had been recorded on this stunning Willis Organ as re-built by Mander! This organ is one of the finest of all concert instruments in the UK!
