In 2014, Elida Almeida sang in a bar in Praia, Cape Verde, where she attended university and worked to support her young son and her family. In the audience was José da Silva, head of Lusafrica Records and producer of Cesaria Evora. Two months later, she started recording her debut album 'Ora doci, Ora margos' (Sweet Times, Bitter Times). The album is full of original songs that contain enormous depth for the then 22-year-old singer, and which she performed with her exceptional, warm and soulful voice.
The song 'Nta Konsiqui' went viral and earned her an RFI Prix Découvertes Award. Since then, her musical career has been booming: two more critically acclaimed albums, collaborations with other Cape Verdean stars such as Lura, Lucibela and Djodji, a release with Brazilian singer Flavia Coelho and performances in Africa, Europe and the US.
Elida Almeida closed the Africa Festival Hertme 2022 on Sunday.
In 2014 zong Elida Almeida in een bar in Praia, Kaapverdië, waar ze naar de universiteit ging en werkte om haar jonge zoon en haar familie te ondersteunen. In het publiek zat José da Silva, hoofd van Lusafrica Records en producer van Cesaria Evora. Twee maanden later begon ze met het opnemen van haar debuutalbum 'Ora doci, Ora margos' (Zoete tijden, Bittere tijden). Het album staat vol met originele nummers die een enorme diepgang bevatten voor de toen nog 22 jarige zangeres, en die ze ten gehore bracht met haar uitzonderlijke, warme en soulvolle stem.
Het nummer 'Nta Konsiqui' ging viral en leverde haar een RFI Prix Découvertes Award op. Sindsdien gaat haar muzikale carriere als een speer: nog twee veelgeprezen albums, samenwerking met andere Kaapverdische sterren als Lura, Lucibela en Djodji, een release met de Braziliaanse zangeres Flavia Coelho en optredens in Afrika, Europa en de VS.
Elida Almeida sloot het Afrika Festival Hertme 2022 af op de zondag.
