My HS choir director was a singer of Moses Hogan and traveled with him for 15 years! I’m grateful I got the chance to learn from the understudy of Moses Hogan himself, and His music is with me every day. I wish to carry the torch of both Moses Hogan and my old director. I’m forever grateful.
I don’t really pay attention to composers-if I like a song I like a song-but Moses Hogan is a name I will never forget. The fact you were taught by an understudy of his?! I am beyond envious. I wish I could’ve met Mr. Hogan. To me, the man is to spirituals what Pete Seeger was to American folk music-Resurrecting and giving songs new magic and life.
We sang this one back in high school for All County…the breathless silence after the last note died gave way to applause that thundered and shook the room for over a minute when we were through. We received Superior marks that year, and I can still close my eyes and hear it all 26 years later. #SimplyTheBest
This man’s music sends chills through me and gets me watery-eyes. I do miss singing in my chamber choir. My only regret is never having the opportunity to meet him. Amazing performance, ladies and gents.
Same, I believe Moses Hogan was the guest conductor for South Carolina All State Mixed Chorus the year before he died (2002)-which is a great CD btw, I wish I could find it or order a new one.
One of the most amazing experiences I ever had in choir was when Moses Hogan came to direct us for a concert. I was lucky enough to stand right by his shoulder and watch him play the piano. His gift was amazing. I will forever be grateful to have met him and sung with him.
High Point High School, Beltsville, Md class of 1999 won many competitions thanks to Moses Hogan's arrangement of Elijah Rock. Such an impressive spiritual.
I am lucky to have had the most wonderful choir director in high school who introduced us to many of his songs. We were able to meet him and sing with him and it was the most wonderful experience. He has since passed and I am so thankful we got the opportunity to meet him and perform with him. Some members of my high school choir along with my director are performing 'Hear My Prayer' at my dad's funeral next week, I can't listen without tears and chills. What a wonderful composer.
