Viktor Ullman wrote this arrangement of Elijahu Hanavi in 1944, while serving as the "Director of Leisure Activities" at Thereisenstadt concentration camp. Of his time there, Ullman wrote, "By no means did we sit weeping on the banks of the waters of Babylon. Our endeavor with respect to arts was commensurate with our will to live."
Ullmann did not survive the Holocaust, and it is unknown whether this arrangement was actually performed at Thereisenstadt. On December 9, we will take part in "Rediscovered Voices," a concert dedicated to ensuring that the voices of Ullman and other Holocaust composers are preserved and remembered.
