I had no idea you could tread water like this. I just started public (beginner) swimming lessons, and in our 4th session we were brought to the dive tank with life jackets on and shown how to tread water for about 10-15 minutes. After that we were instructed to take our jackets off, jump into the deep water and try to tread for 30 seconds. I was NOT ready, but did it anyway and promptly started to sink after I resurfaced (trying the egg beater). After watching this video, I was able to do the chair pose on my second try. I'm now able to tread for about 15 seconds doing a flutterkick, but knowing that I can relax back into the chair position if I get too tired has made me relax more in the water. Thank you so much for posting this!

Yes! This is exactly how I managed to stay afloat. Just last month I tried going to deep parts of pool and whenever I sink, I try to go back to floating. So it finally dawned on me that going almost floating (with slightly diagonal than completely vertical) when leaning back really does the trick, even without moving the arms.

I wholeheartedly agree! I`ve been swimming since I was 6, I`m good at it at the amateur level, I can theoretically do the eggbeater, however, I never understood why it is seen as the most efficient technique to tread water? Hi - thank you for your comment and welcome to the channel! That is a matter of preference and body type. I would say, give it a try, if it is easier for you to have your legs wider, than 100% start doing that. @caribeswim

I totally hear you. The Foundation of swimming is relaxation and breath control. They ARE the deciding factors of how successful or less than successful we are with swimming any stroke, including Freestyle. This has to do with our ability to learn how to work WITH the water, instead of fighting against it. Relaxation & Breath control allows us to be more buoyant, relative to the water vs. if we: force movements, aren't relaxed, or do not have air in our lungs. The ladder makes us more dense. This is incredibly important as it changes how we approach swimming all together. Most programs want to push technique until they are blue in the face. The problem with this theory is that ALL THE TECHNIQUE in the world, cannot overcome lack of relaxation or no air in our lungs. ---- I say all this to say, focus on implementing meditation or at least Box Breathing [4 second diaphragm breath expanding stomach inhale, 4 second pull breath up to chest and hold at top, 4 second exhale, 4 second hold at bottom] repeating 5-10 times BEFORE you swim. Once we can relax more, we are more buoyant and therefore can focus more on simple techniques that make large impact. If you film a 30 second segment of you swimming and send to Jeff@caribeswim.com I am happy to provide a free analysis as well. Hope this helps! Until then, Keep Swimming, Coach Jeff

@caribeswim

Thank you for your comment. It is possible that it is slightly harder for some, but the extra air in your lungs [creating buoyancy in the water] FAR outweighs that. Try treading or this position while exhaling your air... you will sink.

Hey, I tried this technique today but I still couldn't tread water, I don't understand what might be the problem, I took a proper diaphragmatic breath and tried the chair drill while leaning back my upper body, and sculling together too, still I sank in the water. I can backfloat easily now but still can't tread water, especially in the deeper end, I get extremely anxious and short of breath in the deepwater but I can easily relax in shallow water which is why I tried this in shallow water only. Are there any other things I should consider? Any more exercises for relaxing better in the water?

Great question - your entire foundation of treading water and indeed learning to swim is built on relaxation. The more you can relax and work WITH the water, the better you will be. Think of it like this: When we use forceful movements, we create tension in our muscles. More tension in our muscles makes us more dense. The more we relax, the less dense we become. --- Hope this helps! Let me know how I can help further! Coach Jeff Wood

what if I have negative buoyancy, I immediately sink even if I am on my back like a star fish, my legs will sink.
@caribeswim
@caribeswim Год назад
Hi Julianblacksmith8539 - thank you for your comment and welcome to the channel! The truth is that most adults believe they are negative buoyant when in fact they are tense or their body position is incorrect in the water -or- they have not taken a deep enough breath. There are many myths about "sinkers" vs "floaters" but its simply not true. Do this: 1. Take a diaphragmatic breath 2. Ensure you are 100% relaxed, if you are not, go to shallow water, if you are still not, get our flotation belt 3. Gain necessary exposure in this position - usually a minimum of 1-3 hours in shallow water before moving to deep water. --- NOW, with that said, some people are under 10% body fat and this does present a challenge but not impossible as I have taught professional athletes this and it still works! @caribeswim
@caribeswim 4 месяца назад
Thank you for your comment - the truth is that we ALL have unique floating positions - they are not all "perfect" with our arms and legs on top of the water. When we look at relative density, muscle is more dense relative to water. Whereas adipose tissue is less dense relative to water. With that said, extremely muscular people can still float but we generally have to include much deeper breaths, relaxation, & sometimes movement. --- Hope this helps >> If I can offer any further feedback or support, let me know! What's the point of holding breath to fill lungs? Don't you want to be above the water so you can breathe?
@caribeswim
@caribeswim Месяц назад
Thank you for your comment - yes, the more air in your lungs, the more natural buoyancy you have in the water... filling your lungs is like inflating your bodies natural flotation device. Work smarter... not harder! Even though our face in above the water, we still want to have a breathing pattern so we can utilize the aforementioned benefits. If we are constantly breathing, we will have to use energy to stay buoyant. Hope this helps :). ---- Thanks again, Coach Jeff
