I'm a bass player and my plucking hand's pinky tends to curl spastically and accidentally pluck a string, which... annoys me slightly. I'm going to follow your recommendations, 10 mns a day, every single day. If my brain hasn't built new connections one year from now, I'm gonna get you! Meanwhile... thanks a lot, Jamie! :)

I know it's only been 3 months, but have you seen any changes? I want to know if this actually works.

@@myak5754 It does! Not to say that it *never* curls anymore, especially when I play fast, but it's much much better! Also, I've stopped worrying so much about it: when it happens, I just notice it, slow down a bit, relax, take a deep breath and trust the process. Many good players have had this kind of technical problems and managed to fix them. Why couldn't I? Patience, persistance, trust! ;)

@@jph7957 Great, thanks! Im playing Memories by Maroon 5 on my guitar for a celebration of life in less than a month. So I doubt I'll have any improvement by then but I'll practice this for the future when I play more in front of people as I get better. Happy playing!

What's the difference between sympathetic motion and sympathetic tension, and shouldn't one try to avoid either? Great pinky awareness exercise BTW.

sympathetic motion occurs by virtue of bones being connected by ligaments and skin. Movement of one acts to pull on another. Sympathetic tension happens by virtue of muscle contraction occurring that serves no purpose, but happens simply as a reaction to tension in a nearby (or distant) muscle.

I know what sympathetic tension is from reading your book, but I can't recall any mention of sympathetic motion. Thank you for clearing that up.

Hi there, I use all of my finger to play in fingerstyle including pinky. I use thumb for upper two strings and rest of them my four fingers. I cannot put pinky in rest of my right hand. Do you think its a problem? Thanks!

I don't know what you mean by "I cannot put pinky in rest of my right hand". I thought you said you use all the right hand fingers. ??
