I can’t believe I’m going to say this but here it goes. Garanca is fantastic in this role. I would travel to hear her sing it live. I have never been a fan, but damn she sings this so well. It’s a perfect combination on great singing and wonderful acting and I totally see her growing through this role as well. Congrats to her. She’s found another signature role.
Not in all her operatic roles I'm afraid. She is a good singer and her vocal qualities and acting skills are remarkable to captivate an audience when she uses them right. Nevertheless, she has taken on some roles that were inadequate and pushed her voice beyond reasonable boundaries, especially Verdian roles, where she is singing with perceived force and not with perceived ease. Still, I'd be happy if I had half of her vocal capacities.

I absolutely love this production! I, first, should mention the wonderful camera work. The sets and costumes and lighting are amazing. Make me feel like I was there. The acting and blocking are perfect! The singing and orchestra are excellent.

Imagina el contraste cuando las notas graves de Saioa siendo soprano ya las quisiera Elina para sí como mezzosoprano. Mira que Elina no me cae mal y me parece que tiene buenos trabajos, pero para papeles completos, ni Verdi ni los veristas en general (excepto quizá Carmen de Bizet).
Garanca is amazing beautiful singing and great acting. I thought she is too beautiful for this role but her acting makes it forget you just feel the desperation of the poor girl.
Allí estuve, 18 de marzo de 2019, para escuchar a Garança en esta magnífica producción; y después Pagliacci con Marina Rebeka, que no hay forma de encontrar. Una noche de ópera grande.
Exceleeenteee...!! Un tanto apretada la escenografía.. te sorprende.. mas luego el hilo del drama y la magnífica Santussa de Garanca y mamma Lucía.. iluminaron la escena.. Coro y Orquesta espléndidos...!! Gracias por publicarlos..!!

Que bueno hubiera sido que hubieran cantado LAS NOTAS escritas por Mascagni...y no hayan gritado cualquier cosa...claro, el publico no se dedico a escuchar ninguna grabacion de esa obra maestra y se traga cualquier bodrio...

There's nothing in the original story or the libretto to support the idea that Santuzza is pregnant. And I doubt Mascagni would approve of this nonsense.
@@remomazzetti8757 Still, it's not like she could get a doctor to prescribe "the pill." Even for a Sicilian, Santuzza's despair seems exaggerated if her boyfriend merely dumped her. Mascagni would have a lot more to complain about besides this production. Can you name any soprano character who got pregnant out of wedlock?
There was a production (with Monastyrska and J Kaufman no less) in which she has already had a child. I saw a production where she was visibly pregnant and clasps her belly when Turrido’s death is announced. There is nothing in the script that actually suggests she is pregnant; I suspect the audience of Mascagni’s day would have been scandalized.

I think that it is not true to say that Garanca has "no voice" for this role. She does much of it very well. Where she seems to lack the voice is in the choral sections [particularly the "Ineggiamo"] which is a key part of the opera. She certainly does the "Voi lo sapete" very well vocally and with quite a bit of emotional involvement. Perhaps she has taken on the role too soon. For instance, even Troyanos and Cossotto [two of the great mezzo Santuzzas] did not take on the role until quite late in their careers.
voce e interpretazione artistica con un drammatismo eccezionale in questa cavalleria rusticana perfettamente ambientata in una limitata coreografia di un palcoscenico. Elina come attrice e m.soprano dimostra essere insuperabile, oggi- Dire BRAVA e dir poco.
ll sentire siciliano del Verga un pò manca , d'altronde ANCHE MASCAGNI non era siciliano , quindi la profonda tragicità della nostra anima non può essere del tutto rappresentata, ma è sempre un buon tentativo e merita gli applausi dei siciliani. I needed this. I just came from Met's production with a zero acting ability Santuzza. It's a difficult acting role, I understand, but 'emoting' for 90 minutes? Painful to watch. Garanca has it all (even a bizarre red wig...why?!) God, can she act! And sing!! Maybe not recent years' standard Santuzza voice type, but they used to have sopranos sing this role, you know.
Some sopranos have sung great Santuzzas, as long as they have wide vocal range with strong low notes and solid centre, it doesn't make them less apt for Santuzza, and it's better to use a spinto-lyric or dramatic soprano if the programme is a Cav/Pag so she can perform Nedda as well.
Some people in the comments seem not to get Santuzza's red hair: first, red hair is not so uncommon in Sicily; second, redhead women in Southern Italy have always been given a sexual connotation of "seductive sorcerers"
Lo scrivo da italiano, in italiano. Il regista di Cavalleria rusticana non ha capito NIENTE! L'intermezzo è momento di SOLA orchestra, non deve avere azione sul palco. Questo regista dei mie stivali è riuscito a togliere un applauso ai musicisti e al direttore.
Ma chi l'ha detto che non ci deve essere azione sul palco quando c'è questo intermezzo!!! Ma poi solo per questo dovrebbe essere un brutto regista, ma vai va'. Poi c'è pure un film di Zeffirelli che fa mettere azione sia nell'introduzione sia nell'intermezzo!
