The Battle of Saipan was a battle of the Pacific campaign of World War II, fought on the island of Saipan from June 15 to July 9, 1944. It has been referred to as "Pacific D-Day.” The bloody battle resulted in allowing U.S. planes to be based within bombing range of Japan. Postcards interviewed Joseph Tachovsky, a graduate of University of Minnesota and the son of Lt. Frank Tachovsky, who was the commanding officer of a platoon of Marine Scout-Snipers that have become known as the "40 Thieves." Tachovsky drew upon his father’s memoirs and interviews with the soldiers who served under him to write the book 40 Thieves on Saipan: The Elite Marine Scout-Snipers in One of World War II’s Bloodiest Battles.
40 Thieves on Saipan | Season 13, Episode 11 | Aired 4/21/22

This is a truly inspiring story, and I am so grateful to the authors and PBS Postcards team at Pioneer PBS for your storytelling, editing and graphics! This piece is a beautiful tribute to the 40 brave WWII US Marines veterans in the "40 Thieves" platoon led by Lt Frank Tachovsky (Co-Author Joseph Tachovsky's dad). Thank you Joseph and Co-Author Cynthia Kraack for your award-winning book, "40 Thieves on Saipan", and for letting us help you promote it! I cried at the end of this story! So moving!

lol, I was just about to post this...he was wounded on Saipan I think. He always said he was "shot in the ass"...but it was upper buttocks and it hit his f'ing spine. Not quite the same as the butt-wound most imagine. I read his record, they had to go back in weeks later to remove another piece of metal and he had to be disabled in the end due to the injury.

You are spot on ,he was also shot in the foot in the same incident ,when pinned down by a Jap sniper he sure fit the bill ,as he was put in the brig and demoted a number of times, what a life !!!!

He made more combat landings than any other marine I believe. If not, close to it. He made it though.

My late father mentioned the 40 thieves. A Navy Pharmacist Mate, he landed with the 2MarDiv, survived the first Banzi charge. After things settled down he served with the 202 Navy Field Hospital, was promoted to W-1 (MSC) and served as legal and sanitation officer at Camp Susupe, departing in '46 he served 14 more yrs. for 30 yrs of service. Thanks. Narragansett Bay

The video interview by the New York Veterans Society of Corporal Verducci will blow your mind. This is on RU-vid. He was a Marine on Saipan and several other campaigns and his verbatim story is filled with minute details and intense emotion. He starts with his enlistment and yes he was court martialed while on a ship headed for Hawaii with the crime being AWOL. He turned out to be one of the Marines Top Guns but he never got a damn thing for it.

We owe everything to guys like this. If we would have lost that war we would all be speaking Japanese or German. Most of us wouldn't even be here. Thank God for the greatest generation. Younger people need to learn more and be inspired by them.

Thanks to PBS and others for the documentary on the fighting in Saipan. I am grateful for PBS, but one very important comment was left out of this and other WWII films . No one every mentions that African American also fought on Saian. It wasn't until president Obama honored these soldiers with a gold medal in 2016 that most of America didn't know. I'm just glad that WWII is over. Peace to everyone.

Great story. My father was part of the Army Rangers on Saipan. He never spoke much about his WWII experience, as it seems that many of the veterans of the era did.

Please contact me . We had one of the Marine snipers here in NZ about 15-20 years ago . My good friend on the Rifle Range at Trentham New Zealand gave him a tour . And As the Marine walked the range he had a moment , he stopped , and said this is where all his men practiced before they went to , as I recall Tarawa . As the landing barge was going to shore the barge was hit and all but a couple of the men were killed . He had gone to Tarawa and said that barge was still there ! Anything about the Marine snipers who were here in New Zealand ? Oh and the buttress wall in the range pits still has their names on it and is a historical registered site .

Dad, commander of a PBM flying dumbo missions landed near Saipan before the island was secured. Marines were attracted to a Navy P-boat as they knew about Navy chow. Dad traded for souvenirs, mostly letters. He kept them and in 1997, tried to have them translated for possible return. Local professor at the college demanded $50 each page and it never happened. Dad’s admiration for Marines never wavered. He was close enough to know.

My Father and Lord of Heaven, i'm grateful for another day of life in liberty. however, my prayer today is not for me. it is for all the soldiers past present and future. God bless them all. Raise them up on the last day. And grant them the riches they deserve for they gave their all for their family and country. Have mercy on us all, Lord, there is only so much we can see and understand. So watch over us all, protect us from the evil one, and fill us all with your holy spirit till the end of time. Amen.

Your a good man. To make sure these men are not forgotten. Sadly have to say, the direction our country has allowed itself to be taken would disgust these men, and also have to say, we could use some men like these today. Please don't think I'm not respecting today's soldiers. Because I'm not. Breaks my heart that the current catastrophe calling itself out government could care less about our hero veterans sleeping in the streets. It's disgusting. God bless the United States Marine Corps. The only true gift Islam got for the world. President Andrew Jackson sent his ambassador to talk to the Muslim ambassador from Tripoli And ask him to quit seizing our merchant ships and kidnapping the crews and either enslaving them or selling them into slavery. The Muslim ambassadors answer was thier POS religion allowed them to becose we were Infidals.. President Jackson's response was to ask Congress to spend the money to build a real Navy and ships. Along with a force of men once they got there . To deal with the Muslims. And that force was the new United States Marine Corps. So thank the POS Alla, and the disgusting concept of Islam for creating the need for our United States Marine Corps..Always Faithful.
