Road cycling began as an organised Sport in 1868. The first World Championships were held in 1893 and it has been a part of the Olympics in the whole of the modern era. Road Cycling has 2 main types of competition - the Road Race and the Time Trial.
In a Road Race, the riders start together in a bunch. The courses are of varying distances (approx. 260 km for Elite Men and 140km for Elite Women in the UCI World Championships).
Road Races have several different formats. They can be held on a circuit in which riders race over numerous laps like in the UCI Road World Championships; over one-day from one point to another like the Paris to Roubaix Race; or in Stage races in which riders race on consecutive days like the Tour de France.
In the Individual Time Trial the riders set off 1-2 minutes apart, with the reigning Champion leaving last. Without the motivation of other riders around them and the slipstream advantage of bunch riding, the time trial competitor must rely on huge mental strength to keep up the pace and cover the course in the fastest time possible. At the UCI World Championships and Olympic Games, the individual time trial is raced over 40-50 km for Elite Men and 20-30 km for Elite Women.
In a Team Time Trial the principle is the same as for the individual, but teams of between 2 and 10 riders who remain together along the course race this event. The team time trial is on the programme at the UCI Road World Championships as of 2012 (6 riders per team) and is open to UCI ProTeams, UCI Professional Continental Teams, UCI Continental Teams and UCI Women’s Teams.

The only time I've heard Liggett step out of his "neutral" comfort zone was when he said Contador was right to leave Schreck in the TdF when Schreck's chain jammed, even though other commentators were saying it was unsporting of Contador to bugger off. My point is that Liggett can be refreshingly controversial when he wants, but it's very rare.

Wiggins was barely strong enough to hang onto the lead at Tour of California against some Pro Continental team scrubs this year...yet he is now strong enough to beat Tony Martin by almost a minute????

He hung onto them in the mountains - still a good effort for a rider who has not been in his best climbing shape since 2012 - look at his body and legs in this race - no where near the waif which out climbed Nibali in 2012. Don't forget he also demolished the field in the ITT in Cali. It shows his versatility. Tony is nowhere near the climber Wiggo is/was and as Wiggo said - this course represented his last chance to beat the great Martin. 2013 was pan flat and look what happened.

This course was hilly, so weight was imperative. Wiggins had the weight to power ratio on the climbs which helped him make up the deficit on the flats. I am not saying his win was not surprising but mathematically it did make sense, given his previous ITT performances and kgs difference to Martin.

D Pepa Haha! Bet you are the kind of person who claims they have bags of evidence on doping when there isn't any. Of course, I can't prove cyclists aren't doping, but there's no way you can prove they are either, so I wouldn't be dismissive of those who don't follow your clearly accurate and correct opinion.

Yes it was the intended reason. Giro announced in 2013 the design of the ventless helmet in their website "The reason the new helmet has no vent is to fry the brain to the point cyclist cannot feel the pain of hard cycling. We have achieved this with new records being set."

Incidentally,why has Wiggins sat out (or been left out of) the Td France and the Vuelta,? I heard him say on TV he was "gutted" to be left out of the TdF. What's Brailsford playing at? You don't leave a star player sitting on the bench! Maybe there's some conflict with Froome, so if I were Wiggo I'd quit Sky and join a team where I'd be the undisputed team leader.

Seriously, Ligget has to go! I watched all the World s races live on telly and it was painful to listen to the unbelievably bad commentary. I was beginning to wonder if he was even awake. His incompetence and lack of Cycling knowledge is the only legendary thing about him.
