Four hours!?!

Dear Evil, Neon Genesis Evangelion is about seven people. Shinji; a coward, Misato; a hedonist, Rei; an apathetic, Asuka; an egotist, Fuyutsuki; a nostalgic, Ritsuko; a workaholic, and Gendo a tyrant. The first four episodes focus on Shinji adapting to and rejecting his new life as a pilot of the Evangelion. His Evangelion is one of a series of giant cybernetic organisms and these Evangelions, or EVAs are the only things capable of fighting the “angels,” which are Kaiju who are determined to destroy mankind. From episode four up to the midpoint of the series episodes focus on the characters, focusing on their flaws and establishing the historical roots of those flaws which almost always center around emotional rejection. -----spoilers------ The front half of the show is pretty standard giant robot fare with some episodes going hilariously unrealistic lengths while still maintaining a serious delivery. At the midpoint of the series the narrative takes a turn. The angel encounters and high stakes of the story become means to explore the flaws of each character, always coming back to central narrative questions of what are relationships, how do we attain intimacy, why do we run away from emotional connections? The lore of the series is cosmically involved. In its infancy Lilith, the first angel and source of all life planted a white seed on earth to grow its own ecosystem. Something went wrong and the seed of Lilith also crashed on earth. This is the first impact. As it turned out the seed of Lilith sprouted new life, while the white seed for the second angel, Adam, stayed dormant. Humanity discovers the seeds and began tests on Adam. They discovered a protective barrier, the AT field and a lance that could pierce the AT field. They discovered that Adam was supposed to take over the world, and so they used the lance and an experiment to stop him. Doing this caused the second impact which killed much of humanity and made the angels which would then attack the heroes and their army called NERV. It is finally revealed that in this world everyone has AT fields. They separate everyone’s hearts and minds, even their physical bodies. Evangelions are revealed to actually be clones of these first angels but they also each contain the souls of a human female within them. These angel/human/robot entities actually have another, higher goal than just beating the angels. They were made so that humans would merge back together by neutralizing the AT fields of everyone and then return them all to Lilith. But the ability to do this is given to only one young man, Shinji. The events of the series point to a third impact where Shinji has to choose what to do with humanity and life in the universe once all are one.
