Hey there. My pleasure. Thank you for watching. Have you seen the Super 8 footage from 1977 of the City Centre and the car tour of Elizabeth and suburbs?
Thank you for this beautiful video and music. We were living in Elizabeth from the late 1960s to the earlier 1980s and it was lovely. Such beautiful stores, shops and gardens. You have brought back so many happy memories and thank you so much x
Our pleasure Lisa. Thank you for watching - it's the viewer that completes the circle, the whole point of the channel - so thanks again, you're much appreciated 🙏🍷
Staggering footage! I was born in 1976 & have lived in Elizabeth Vale my entire life. The Centre has always been the centre of our universe. A mighty salute to those who film/photo our heritage. I would die to see footage of the old Elizabeth Cinema that closed in 1984, especially of inside!
Me too Mark. I will definately post that here if I ever get my hands on any. There is some more Super 8 footage coming up shot in Smithfield Plains in the 60's where I grew up - should be posting that next month sometime. I saw ET at the Elizabeth Cinemas back in the day. Cheers for watching mate, much appreciated 🙏🍷
How great is it? It was actually their son Werner who sent it in to us. I think Tony and Annie may have past. I've been hoping for a long time now that footage like this would start to surface and be sent in for sharing. Hopefully this is the start of something. Hope you are well Steven 🙏🍷
@@aussie9651 we're starting to see signs that that is happening....mostly photos etc at the moment. Many of these memories are precious; takes time to establish trust - for people to feel safe that whatever they share will be done so with respect. So, here's hoping we are starting to gain that trust. I'm sure there are many more treasures like this out there.

Another little beauty! Enjoying the binge on these posts! Is there anything available about the Olive Grove? It used to be a place of refuge on hot summer days...thanks again Will. 👍
Very little I'm afraid. Not enough to cobble a vid together. But, when I started this channel I had no idea all that super 8 footage existed. Most of it was sent to me after the owners discovered the channel. So you never know. I would love some footage of the old snooker hall
Moving to Elizabeth in 1969 I was Schooled at Elizabeth Park Primary school. High school was Fremont at Elizabeth PArk,, I frequented the billiard saloon up above the bank.
Welcome John. Lovely to hear your history. Please let us know if you have any pics of the old billiard hall, it is very rare treasure indeed. Thank you for watching and sharing, much appreciated - my name is Will, I run this channel, great to hear from you 🙏🍷
Ah, the fond memories rushed back just by watching this video. Thank you to Tony and Annie or family that gave their permission for your channel to share it. A great job at finding history of Elizabeth.
No Sunday trading back in 1974. And probably all closed by 12:30pm Saturday. So people could just do normal weekend stuff, instead of working or shopping. Look at what we have lost...
Yes, imagine how quiet it must have been - those Clock Tower chimes must have been heard from just about every corner of Elizabeth on a Sunday and Saturday afternoon. And people actually talking to each other...lol
The fountain at the beginning of the video triggered a memory for me. I must have been about 5 years old when I got separated from my mum while shopping and decided to go exploring by myself. I used to be fascinated with the water and thought I'd go for a swim. A lady found me and got me out then took me to the Police station where they wrapped me in a towel. 5 minutes later my Mum came flying in screaming "I've lost my child!" and the Policeman at the counter said is it this little wet one here. I remember getting a big hug then a smack! I didn't do that again...
Oh man; what a great memory. I also had that sense of adventure. Always wondering off when I went to the Centre with my Mum - I have several memories of store staff sitting with me until Mum came to collect me. Your poor Mother must have been beside herself. Thank you for sharing, love it 🙏🍷
Wow. Thankyou for the walk through my childhood. That's just how it was. The Coles there used to sell hot hotdogs in a bun . There's a photo of my mother, her sister my 2 cousins,my younger brother and myself holding hotdogs,in the hotdog paper bag, just out the front of Coles. Which was right on the far left corner. It's such a shame all that beautiful big park like area has gone. And of course, along with everything else. In school we'd have swimming classes at the swim centre.and,if I remember rightly,my cousin loved going to the roller skating ring. That's where many couples met. Was a joy to see this.
Our pleasure Toni - and of course, a huge shout out to Tony and Annie's son Werner for sending the footage in and allowing us to share it. Quite a gem, isn't it? Thank you for watching Toni - much appreciated 🙏
Great little clip there, some awesome memories, the dress code of the men was impecable, suits and ties everywhere...the architecture was pretty darn good to not like the shit we have today ... thanx to the contributors of the video, not much of this old stuff around anymore ...
It's a little gem isn't it? Sent in to us by Tony and Annie's son, Werner. How beautiful were the gardens? What were we thinking, allowing Windsor Green to be replaced with a car park...nuts! Geoff Shedley did a great job designing the town centre. It's a shame most don't know who he is today.
@@elizabeththatwas 100% agree this so called modern architecture is total crap the gardens and fountain was such a beautiful part of the entire complex ... the founders would be rolling in their graves if they could see the mess made of it now !
@@thelostboys1968 I think you could be right there my friend. Interestingly, there was a great push in the beginning to name Elizabeth, Playford, after Thomas Playford. He himself was dead against it. I wonder what he would make of Playford City and Elizabeth being scaled back to suburb status.
@@elizabeththatwas i actually think its only a matter of time before elizabeth may get renamed ! Like look how well it worked for Davo park? Lol ... methabeth may suit ?
@@thelostboys1968 lol. Has it got that bad? That's a shame. Love the name, but maybe they could call it Queens,or Lilibet? I don't know. Dover gardens was that originally some other name,or am I way off?
I came to the area around the mid-80s. I think I remember an orange grove somewhere across the road from the new police station. I could be wrong. It's not so bad right now, the upgrade is wonderful. We just look after what we have to be proud Elizabethans. And, learning how to do that starts from home.
Hello Mary - thank you for watching. I totally agree - we all must look to what we can do as individuals and branch out from there - be the change we want to see, as the saying goes. This channel is in no way a criticism on today's Elizabeth, for to do that would be to criticise the people of Elizabeth...and I would never do that - I have too much reverence for you, as well as my own history in Elizabeth - it's the place of my birth. I was concerned that people's history was being erased with mass demolitions and the allowing of many buildings to go derelict for years on end - and I didn't like the idea of people feeling dismissed, or as if their experiences and part of Elizabeth history didn't matter, or something to be ashamed or embarrassed about. For a community to have a sense of pride and grounding it needs a history - architecture can go a long way to providing that sense of history - a nod to who and what has come previous. I doubt many young Elizabethens would even know who Geoff Shedley is at this point, and yet he designed the original Town Centre shown in this film and much of Elizabeth and surrounding suburbs - he was a huge influence on how Elizabeth developed in those early years and was committed to serving the people of Elizabeth. So, this is what I can do - help preserve a sense of history, and as you say, pride in being an Elizabethen. There is a brief reference to the new Windsor Green in the video coming up on June 19, and then there will be a video looking at the new Windsor Green after that. I suspect many don't know there is a new Windsor Green or what it looks like, and although I prefer the original (of course I would....haha), I do appreciate the attempt to blend the old with the new - rather than the more common practise or demolition or buildings being left derelict. The future need not negate the past I guess is what I'm saying, which seems all too common today. I am building a narrative with this channel that I hope will help to bridge the past with the present (ironically) over time. Bless you for having such a reverence for Elizabeth and its people, and for being part of this community - we need more like you 🙏🍷
Hey Vincent. There is a lot of brokenness for sure. That's in part why I started this channel - to honour the "Originals" and their memory, and to give young people a digital history of who and what came before them. To bring back some humanity into the narrative of what people think and feel when they think of Elizabeth. Not to negate the issues at present, but certainly to bring some much needed balance into the conversation of Elizabeth. Thanks again for watching - always appreciated mate 🍷🙏🏆
@@elizabeththatwas I was born 10 years after the originals I was born in the area, and yes I still live here , I reflect on the old Elizabeth with fondness , and the current with a sadend heart , I remember a time you could stroll at night when the shops were closed at the centre, no cameras, no security and certainly no grief from me and my mates
@@vincentthao3497 all we can do is be the change we want to see mate - as cliche as that may be. I hear you. I don't live in the area but return frequently for family/friends etc - and because I do have deep reverence for the place, which includes the land itself - upon which I was also born. I have to be mindful not to get too saddened by the whole thing. Just enough to inspire me to do the little I can to make a difference. Hence this channel. And we mustn't treat Elizabeth as though her story is finished. It isn't, and the future always holds the potential and possibility for something better
@@elizabeththatwas I certainly have very fond memories of Elizabeth as a young child. Although very bad things happened to me for the years I lived there it Wasn't Elizabeth's fault, but family, which made it hard at school. And poverty. But I try and recall the good memories there. Eating the sour sobs across the road, before the flats were built. Going out and licking the road after it rained. I was about 5 folks, and Still sucking a flannel lol. We only had 1 incident I recall when a man who'd robbed somebody was on our roof of the maisonette. Other than that, people could go for a walk at dusk and not worry about anything.
That's awesome. I'll think of that now every time I re-watch. I love hearing everyone's connections to different videos, times and memories. Cheers for sharing 🙏🍷
And all the wedding reception photos, all the lunches. She was a great central point for many. Thank you for watching Greg - much appreciated. Hope it brought back happy memories for you. Will 🙏🍷
