For whatever reason as a kid, I made the association that since Spiriah was the Makuta who mutated the Skakdi, that rider that's built with him was a pre-mutation Skakdi. Even now a decade later, whenever I envision pre-mutation Skakdi I just see variations of that build.
You should've mentioned how the Niazesk in canon is the size of a fly. Of course, the ones we see in 08 were mutated to the size of a Toa, but when they were created they were tiny.
@@diegodankquixote-wry3242 Unfortunately, I don't have the Cycle built, and that'd be a lot of time taken away from other projects to do that. I'll see if I can get a friend of mine to take a picture of that, however!
About Spiriah: I always assumed the matoran thing was just to justify him being a ‘combo’ model but upping the parts count. Kinda like how Jovak had shoulder-feet and a weirdly large weapon, as otherwise he’s just Nuparu with a few different parts. Also Spiriah looks like something a kid would throw together as his/her first MOC. Also also, Spiriah is a play on pariah, a “social outcast”. Fitting.
06 started to see some sets like Umbra not have any involvement with combiner models Lesovik, Karzahni, Nocturn, Hydraxon, Maxilos and Spinax, Gadunka, heck even the toa mahri didn't have any combiner outside the one with the barraki. 07 definitely had the most potential for combiners and we got nothing from those sets. 08 definitely had good potential as well with Vultaz, Mazeka, Icarax, Mutran and Vican, more Ignika. I hope people make some amazing combiner model from them and they get canonized into the story.
Maybe you should do the ‘09 and ‘10 combinations in one video. There’s only one for each year so I think it might be a smart idea in hindsight. Also I’m actually kind impressed you kept the Solek you chainsawed. I have no idea why anyone would
Trinuma's blasters are actually attached to his back, which hinders the articulations, but that's how every picture and the instructions tell you to connect them.
WTF! We are only doing one combo model next month? That feels like such a waste when 2010 also has only one combo model. I do like how all these combos are fairly major characters or interesting Rahi because I actually thought the Toa Mistika combo was some version of Kaita
Wheels are canon, both the destral cycle, Umbra's skiis, and the matoran barrows from the MNOG used wheels. Pewku was describes pulling a cart in Dark Mirror, which should have wheels or treads also
@@surelnuva yes you are right. I was making a joke about how wheels are not official cannon up to 09 according to Greg and at the same time they show up all over the place.
@@zeanyt2372 I seem to recall that being something invented for the Miramix films, which are kinda semi-canon. As for Greg's statements, well, he would kind of just pull things out of his ass like that whenever he saw fit :P
Excited for this! I never built most combiners past 2001 and while I've obviously seen a lot of pics I've never really studied them, so this show has been a bit of a revelation. Just a shame it's almost all over!
One of the funniest tales I’ve seen is that the Matoran thing that comes with Spiriah is actually Lariska since they both appear together in Federation of Fear
weird, I own a couple of 2008 sets (tanma, lewa, rockoh and axalara) and I never had any problems with broken pieces. I had many slightly fractured joints in my 2009 canister sets, of which I own all 12. almost every single one of them had fissures on their connectors.
I used to think the Niazesk looked worth while to build but seeing it in the flesh I'm second guessing it a bit. Swamp Stalker also suffers from looks better on picture not so great in reality. Yea I'm taking his advice and only getting the Destral Cycle.
I really recommend building the two Rahi in this one, especially the Swamp Stalker. Mine is red instead of lime green and it's an amazing figure, looks real good.
I just build Spiriah last week, after ordering extra sets. Honestly, I really like him. He uses a fair amount of parts, looks fairly good at a glance and is worth putting next to the other Makuta. The "Matoran" is shoddy, but I simply prefer leaving it on Spiriah, making it a part of him. Really tempted to get parts to make the Destral Cycle and the Toa Mistika combo.
That Matoran that clips on Spiriah's back, I'm going to say that's a Nynrah Ghost Matoran & Spiriah needs to feed into the Matoran's brain to become OP genius to beat the competition out of his own brothers
Compared to Spiriah, Niazesk is quite a weird case to me. Both combiners involve a Toa Phantoka and a Phantoka Makuta, characters from opposing sides in the Phantoka line, but the only difference is that Niazesk also requires Toa Ignika, who is kind of an outsider, if that makes sense. Also, you want to know what I find surprising? Kopake Phantoka and Makuta Chirox are the only character who arent part of a combiner set. I wonder why? Maybe it's because there isn't much "bulk" to go by with the leftover characters in the Phantoka line (especially in Chirox's case) to to make another character or Rahi, but who knows?🤷♂️
12:12 - that is the first time I’ve seen that piece for the foot in Bionicle. I originally thought that it was from hero factory season 4 breakout. I hope that doesn’t make me stupid...
15:45 - Sexy Antroz wants to bring ya on a joyride. Ah, the shitty plastic of '08. Can't wait to track down enough functional parts to build these for my collection one day :/
I hate how brittle the parts from 07 and 08 are. Lewa Phantoka was one of my favorites sets and I spent a good chunk of money getting a new set a couple of years ago. Brand new. And every joint cracked, now one arm doesn't even stay in anymore. At least my Mata Nui set is still in one piece.
I'm gonna horrify everyone by saying im going to build every. single. one. And the final 2 combos of g1 so. I'm also gonna try a hand at the fictional Tahu, Antroz (Jetrax), and Solek combination model.
Okay I get this two more years but just are you going to be 2015-2016 I don't think there's any conveyor models in 2010 and 2016 but it would be cool if you did do a 6 or 12:15 stop
So, I had made a MOC of the three Makuta Mistika. I would love to post it for all to see. It has Gorast’s feet as poison claws with its head as a poison stinger. A combination head of Krika and Bitil, chest cannon, and it has Hordika blaster with Bitils wings and swords as shields on both hands. I wish I could have made that a canon model for Bionicle. I still have that MOC built on my bookshelf. If I could post it here, I would love to. I’m sure you would enjoy my work.
Great question. They're specified in the instructions, but do not come with any of the requisite sets. Interestingly, the one image of that combo that isn't from the instructions shows the standard Antroz limbs. This model featured in the video was built by someone else, per the instructions.
Since the next year has just one combo, maybe you could expand on it. Elaborate a bit more on the story of the character (if applicable), talk a bit on some fixes that might solve the issues and maybe show some unofficial combos that fans might have come up with. Just keep it below 15min, so it doesn't drag (unless the fan combos are to great). Cheers.
2008 and 2009 had some good ideas but the brittle joints killed the waves. Honestly, if I had to hazard a guess, I’d speculate the decline in parts quality had a hand in the line’s failure.
The sockets from the early years would break as well over time, but 2008-2010 had the most brittle parts. When I was placing Bricklink orders to get some sets I never got all built up, I intentionally purchased more of the 2008-2010 joints so I'd have spares in case they do break despite the fact that I don't plan on ever taking apart any of the official sets I have set up.
I wanted to combine al makuta sets to create the Teridax monstrosity from the Kingdom universe, but of course I fear for the joints and unfortunately I couldn't find a custom parts pack with the makuta pieces I need to build it on Stud.io
