Got the Elk Satellite Antenna working with both a tripod and a monopod… All for under six dollars.
The photos show the set up both ways along with a photo of the parts from Home Depot. The cost estimate is somewhat of a guess since I already owned the 7/8" 1/4" 20 coupling nut. The whole setup is surprisingly rigid and not very prone to turning so far.
The fellow at Home Depot recommended the finishing washer for the top since it would dig into the PVC as you tighten the screw. (I used a wing screw so as not to have to screw with finding a screwdriver. By the way, I had never heard of the term "wing screw" until this afternoon.)
One part that is not shown is a large washer with a quarter-inch hole inserted all of the way into the PVC. Also be aware that I could only get a 1/4" 20 wing screw that was 1.5 inches long - so this barely fits lengthwise for mounting to the tripod. If you can find one 1.75 inches long or 2 inches long - and/or get a 1/4" 20 coupling nut longer than 7/8", you will be a happier camper. I am going to look for one myself since we're past the proof of concept point.
Note that the old, rusted, tripod head that I am using offers all three axis (sic) which should make working even SO-50 okay.
This approach lacks the elegance that others have come up with - but I needed something to work and we are leaving town in a week.

perfection." Mike Tyson says, "Everybody has a plan until they are hit." We will have to wait a week and see how well this sloppy success plan works on a windswept oceanfront balcony.
