In 1990 Debbie Allen, Anita Baker, Diahann Carrol, Neil Carter, Bill Cosby, Tony Danza, Lola Falana, Ella Fitzgerald, Goldie Hawn, Gregory Hines, Bob Hope, Whitney Houston, Jesse Jackson, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Shirley MacLaine, Dean Martin, Eddie Murphy, Gregory Peck, Richard Pryor, Frank Sinatra, Mike Tyson, Dionne Warwick, Steve Wonder and Eddie Murphy as host all appeared on stage in celebration of Sammy's 60 years in show business.
This show won the Emmy award and was the last appearance of Sammy who sadly passed away from throat cancer on May 16th - just weeks after this program was broadcast.
This was the very first time I encountered how Ella Fitzgerald could captivate an audience when she performed. It is one of the few regrets in my life that I never got to experience her magic in person.
This appearance turned me in to a lifelong fan of "The First Lady of Song" and i've had fond memories of this performance ever since.
We miss you Ella.

it is such a bitter sweet thing you know. Here I am at 61 years old and have been hip to Ella Fitzgerald for years. She is one of my favorite singers of all time. I came across this while looking for something in particular (Lush Life the album) by Nancy Wilson and was just blown back yet again by the sheer awesomeness of her genius, talent and skill. To hear how she had to spend her last days was so heartbreaking but I know where ever she is they are making it swing!

In 1985 she was hospitalized briefly for respiratory problems, in 1986 for congestive heart failure, and in 1990 for exhaustion. In 1993 she had to have both of her legs amputated below the knee due to the effects of diabetes. Her eyesight was affected as well. That poor girl was being taken away not just from us, but from her love and passion - music, piece by piece. They just don't build 'em like that anymore - Ella broke the mould! Incredible woman. Incredible legacy.

In 1996, she was sick of being in the hospital, and went home to spend her last days at home. Confined to a wheelchair since the loss of her legs, Ella loved to sit in her backyard of her Beverly Hills mansion on Whittier, with her son Ray and 12 year old granddaughter Alice. "I just want to smell the air, listen to the birds and hear Alice laugh," she reportedly said.

Ella was arguably the best female American popular singer in the business. When she was at the peak of her abilities in the late 50s/early to mid 60s, she was simply unmatched by anyone. The set with Sinatra in his 1967 special is magnificent.

On the last day, she was wheeled outside one last time, and sat there for about an hour. She was taken back in, she looked up with a soft smile on her face and said, "I’m ready to go now." She passed away in her home on June 15th, 1996. She was 78 years old.

Had the good fortune to hear the Great Ella live 4 times, twice with the Count Basis Orchestra, twice with the combo, and have heard her great musical director Tommy Flanagan around 25 times at the Village Vanguard doing his mostly Thad Jones show.

There was nobody like Ella! Do you remember that you never heard a breath of scandal regarding her either. She just stood there and sang. A favorite of mine is when she did "Mack the Knife" in concert and got some lyrics mixed up...too funny. Ah, the memories of greatness...

Performing from 1935 till 1990. What a prolific and accomplished women. Her Billy and Sarah revolutionised vocal jazz from the 1930s though till the 1960s

Ella was beset with severe health problems at this point and was in the twilight of her performing career. When she was in prime form ,i.e. in the Sinatra Man And His Music part II special, she could blow the ceiling off the theater. I strongly recommend the Sinatra/Ella medley from that show; one of the great musical sequences of the last fifty years.

Indeed, Ella is in Heaven with the Greatest who sang with their soul and their heart, like Piaf, Sammy, Frank, Elvis, John Lennon, Cruize, and so many more....but Ella is on a throne with Piaf, looking down at us with love and compassion...

(1/1/16) I haven't scene this since it aired, 25 years ago, and I remember everything: Murphy and MJ escorting her out, and each kissing her on a cheek (as if further evidence of her pre-eminence was necessary), and Sammy sitting there with his face in his hands in awe. And, not incidentally, she sang her *ss off.

At 73, her jazz was just as hot as when she was 33. You don't have to be able to skip rope to sing your heart out and put across a song. You run out of superlatives when you try to speak of Ella, so you just listen. Again and again.

You’re very welcome. I ripped it from my old VHS as I was surprised to find that it wasn’t available on RU-vid many years ago. It’s a performance that really needs to be seen by future generations as Ella is forever.
