She is one of the greatest singers...EVER! Ella Fitzgerald inspired the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. Per interview, Aretha talks about how she idolized Ms. Fitgerald and Sarah Vaughn growing up. That's why if you listen to some of Aretha's runs...very similar to Ms. Fitzgerald.

She's a singer that has soo many flavors to her voice! The variety of the sound she can produce - truly she's literally an instrument! She's such a songbird! She's thee songstress of scat! No one matches her! "Make musical sense while saying non-sense syllables."

The technical skill is just out of this world. A professional SINGER. Thanks as usual for your wonderful analysis. Scatting is so skilled it's almost mathematical. My brother did Maths and Music at university and it's a good pairing because you almost have to think mathematically about music.

its mostly due to the facts there were a lot of wars and a lot of money was spent in the arts during the 20s-50s. a lot of people were trained as singers, especially churchgoers. most blacks were catholics or christians. spending most of the time in school singing as well as church singing, thats 6 days out of 7 they spend singing!
@honeybee7855
@honeybee7855 2 года назад
@@yumyummarbles it's got nothing to with the war or money being pumped into the arts in regards to Black people. Black people were singing well before and after the war and didn't have access to a lot of the funding. You're right that Black people who grew up in church were trained to sing in the church by singing weekly or multiple times a week.
@yumyummarbles

@@yumyummarbles most black people are Christian not catholic only in states like Louisiana you'll find a lot of black people are catholic that's because Louisiana was colonized by the French and Spanish but black folks sound different from any other black religious folks around the world because we created negro spirituals, which gave birth to all the genres we created including country, people from every ethnicity in different places around the world try and copy our soul singing but they forget one ingredient is growing up in a black church singing choirs the best singers come from a those backgrounds we have master class singers in churches.

A lot of people don't know Marylin Monroe loved Ella Fitzgerald. During Jim Crow they refused to let Ella Fitzgerald perform in a lot of places. It was bad enough Black entertainers still couldn't use the front door. They had to use the back door and couldn't stay in hotels in Vegas where they had perform. Marylin Monroe told a club she would show up every night IF, they let Ella perform and they did. Marylin Monroe was friends with Ella and said Well, Ella is my very favorite person, and I love her as a person as well as a singer, I think she's the greatest, and that's Ella Fitzgerald." Not only was Monroe a Fitzgerald fan, but she was also a friend who used her status as a Hollywood star to boost Fitzgerald's career. Their friendship would last until Monroe's untimely death. And even after Monroe had died, Fitzgerald remained grateful for the support the star had provided during her lifetime. Back in the day, celebrities used their platform to speak out against injustice, racism and bigotry. And they could have been blackballed for doing it

I have often said that there are a few musical performances that ought to be played on constant rotation in the Louvre, MOMA, the Smithsonian, which showcase unparalleled genius. Ella Fitzgerald at the North Sea Jazz Festival is one of those, Diana Ross at Caesars Palace is another. Miss Ella performed under hot lights with a heavy wig for over an hour, never stopping for a break. Her voice never faltered, nor her composure. It was masterful. Thank you for bringing THE EMPRESS OF JAZZ to us in this critique, Mr. Jaron.🌹💋❤️

I love these. I introduced my son to you yesterday. He's a closeted singer. I hear him walking around doing runs, humming, everything, but he is shy, which is o.k. with me. I just keep introducing him to all kinds of music and different singers. So I told him, "I want you to see this guy who breaks down how singers are using their bodies, their muscles, their mouths, etc... to make the sounds that they want." He looked at me with intrigue and said, "How do people do that? I hit play on one of your videos. I have a request for Mahalia Jackson's "Trouble of the World." I have already requested that that song be sung at my funeral.

Had to say one more thing. The description about the scatting and the technicality is the finest explanation I have heard of what's going on in the head when we sing. I haven't ventured into scatting territory, but believe I could give it a try. I thought I was the only one who cherished her gift like you do. Please consider featuring Tramaine on Right and Good and Lynette Stephen's live version of God Will Take Care of You from the Berkeley concert ending if you are moved to do it. You are sensational.❤️👏❤️

Thank you much for giving us an Ella 101 it was much appreciated! I love and always will love Ella. With Ella, you also need to concider the history of music Ella was exposed to during her very young years and the town she grew up in. This had to have an influence on her vocal style as well. As a child, she wouldn't have had too much exposure to many different styles/genres of music, so the singing she did hear meant addapting these songs to suit her own singing style. More than not, she would probably have listened to the males and their tones when singing than females, this would have most certainly heightened her creativity in ajusting or including these notes to her range. I've listened to a few Jazz artist in rehearsal and would often hear them vocalise the musical arrangements back to the musical band in order to support the exact Rythum and tempo needed to bring the melody to life: the style they used was scatting. Again Ella would've had the perfect opportunity to hear this and be influenced by this. If I'm wrong about all that please correct me and set me straight.

Pertaining to the scatting - it sounds like you're saying each person has their own scatting "language". Pertaining to Ella - i believe she set the standard for the sound of her era; the vocal style we associate w/that era was completely shaped by her sound w/o giving a black artist credit for it during that time. I remember seeing her on an awards show years ago shortly before she passed. Someone literally had to walk her out to the mike...but when she got there she sounded just as clear as she did in her youth. She's my proof that the voice does NOT have to "age out" if taken care of. Love you, Jaron!
