Songs and movies are shamelessly lazy now To all the people who think they have a ‘gotcha’ moment because Gangsta’s Paradise isn’t wholly original either: Covers are fine, sampling is fine, inspiration is fine. Rehashing is not fine. Gangsta’s Paradise was obviously different from Pastime Paradise; they carried the same strings motif through the song and GP echoed PP’s chorus. GP also had a reason to exist - *it can stand on its own as a song.* Alibi heavily reuses the former two without being able to stand on its own. It feels soulless. It’s a generic pop song on a generic topic with generic lyrics. It’s only notable because it has GP’s strings, choir, and chorus. It feels like a manufactured product made to cash in on the better thing that came before it, à la modern Disney. I’m increasingly hearing more lazily derived songs and it’s disappointing.

Ok i usually grant some grace to artists sampling from older songs, but.. this one literally feels like a micro-agression. You *Really* need to take some consideration for the original themes of a song if you're just gonna rip the whole melody. Pastime paradise and gangstas paradise are both Heavily meaningful songs with a lot of heavy themes of racism and violence. The original is literally about putting your head in the sand and ignoring world evils for frivolous pusuits. You cannot really twist that meaning to a fucking breakup song. This is parody!

so, regardless of whether this song sounds good or not, *why* does this song sample gangstas paradise/pastime paradise? pastime paradise was a reflection on society and how we should focus on the present to progress society forward. gangstas paradise built off of the original, focusing on the struggles of actually living in such a society. this is just another 'you cheated on me' song with no themes, anti-themes, or even references to the originals (other than how 'paradise' is in the chorus, i guess?) there are great ways to use samples but this is just lazy to be honest
