I dunno I first watched the show and now I watched the game version and I don't think I've ever seen two variations of a scene that were both this good. Both did something else but man I honestly don't have a preference.
agree, the tension built in the game makes this conversation be more emotional and natural, and the interruption leaves you hanging, knowing they won’t mention it further. the show is far more tamed, still a good way of driving it but falls behind in comparison to this one, imo.
This was the line that had to be crossed for Joel to understand how much he loved Ellie. He's almost there, but he is trying so hard not to feel it because of the loss he's experienced in the past. So when Tommy says he can take Ellie the rest of the way, of course Joel initially accepts. He has an out now. However, seeing how disappointed Ellie was at the idea of separating from him made Joel realize that it would be selfish to hand her over to Tommy. She didn't just deserve someone who would keep her alive, but someone who would die for her.
same thing when joel refused to continue smuggling ellie when tess is dying.. he knew it might hurt his feelings (we knew his past) to send ellie just to die
I seriously don’t envy Bella Ramsey and pedro pascals task to replicate this scene. Troy baker and Ashley Johnson are just insane in this scene and I think the show did a very very good job but something about the original that just can’t be replaced.
@@cristinamanole7398 Troy Baker seems to think so. The voice actor of Joel. He said watching Pedro's performance made him want to go back and do Joel differently.
I rewatched this scene because it’s the one of the most unexpected amazing pieces of art I had ever seen, and I wanted to see it before they made the show version of this scene. Now I realize why it hit me so much: This is the moment, Ellie and Joel realized they love each other. It’s the moment Joel and Ellie realized they are family. Father & Daughter. (Even though they deny it 😂)
"You have no idea what loss is." - One of those lines that just sticks with me. The pain in his voice, the magnitude of everything being said there. From Joel's perspective it's a simple fact, from Ellie's perspective it's too reductive. There is truth on both sides. He's trying to explain how difficult it is for him to connect in any meaningful way with another human after everything he has lost, not just a daughter, but an entire society, a meaningful world. Ellie is trying to explain how her losses have only made it more clear how important their connection is, how she doesn't know how to exist without anything anchoring her to the only shitty world she has ever known. Masterful writing.
Idk how they plan to recreate this scene in the show but I highly doubt it will anywhere near as good as it is here. My absolute favorite scene in the entire game it's soo powerful and filled with strong emotion. I hope they do it justice but I have strong doubts.
At first I always thought Ellie was just reading a random book and the "boys, movies etc." Line came out of nowhere. Later I realized she was probably reading a girl's diary, that's why she said the boys, movies and the shirt goes with which skirt line, as the owner of the diary probably had a date or something before the outbreak started. Not sure how I didn't catch this at first lmao.
Y'know, I know it's popular to hate on the remake. But this scene is one of my all time favorite scenes. I've watched it countless times. They took away the little nuanced look that Joel makes when Tommy barges in saying they have company. Idk why it's so important to me but it feels integral to the scene. Like tommy just dragged Joel back to the reality of the world. Like tommy was intruding. And maybe that Joel was a little embarrassed that he was acting so mean. It seems like that's happened to a lot of the cutscenes in the remake. It's lost the little minute details and idiosyncratic movements and expressions that really made the characters feel human to me in the older versions of the game. Even despite the older graphics
Oh my, yes, that little look. I was surprised when they left such meaningful react out. I sure did not know why it is so important to me, too, till I have this comment of yours. Thank you so much.
Love this scene. One thing I always found funny though is how Joel sees this entire civilization and just says "Fuck it let's travel while the sun is going down" At least take a shower man!
Man I really want a ps5 just to play the remake lol. The new character models look so good and seeing Ellie’s eyes have tears in them make this scene even more emotional.
Thought the show did a great job with a very very difficult scene. Would it have worked with the same dialogue? Different voices? A lot less time and build up than the game affords us? I thought it was quite natural. Sure people are unhappy it’s not the same, or as impactful (and it’s not) but Joel in the series is a different character, and it was a moment when he realises he can become a father again. Joel’s added scene with Tommy was extremely well done and afforded us an insight into his thoughts. The game didn’t do this, and I feel the series has done a much better job with Joel’s character development. Aside from a few flaws, the series has done an incredible job adapting this masterpiece of a game.
Yeees!! The TV show did a 10/10 job with scene. It was befitting of the kind Joel and Ellie they had. In a world where the game didn't exist, that scene from the show would still be iconic as fuck.
I remember first time playing this. Was the first scene that made me tear up I can’t wait to see what the show does with it I hope it’s a bit different so it’s another new experience for me
If you have a ps5... and you never played the original... oh my god you are in for a treat. The emotion and storytelling in this game hits SO HARD especially when the game looks better than real life!
I really want to see how the show recreates the most important scene of the story, the turning point in their relationship. So far, they're doing great
In my opinion, this is the single most important moment in the entire series and they completely skipped it but took the dialogue from it. The only time I’ve actually been disappointed in this show.
I prefer the scene in the game than in the show, but to be fair it’s hard to live up to the scene in the game. I think for anyone who played the game first, it just shaped how it should be, and then the show can only be measured as how well it could reproduce it. To make it even more obvious I can’t even imagine how the show could have made that scene better than in the game, it’s just not a thing, the game is the reference. Maybe someone who watched the show without having seen the game, and then watched the game would feel the opposite. Who knows.
low key upset for the first time with the show how they handled this! the game did it so much better this was supposed to be the first point where joel implicitly decides that he will stay with ellie and in the movie joel offers ellie the choice to be with him or tommy which completely ruins the moment. instead in the game where joel decided ellie is coming with him regardless if he still thinks tommy is better for the job. It was a bit rushed and not as impactful which sucks but hey you can’t win them all. Some added thoughts-> Start the dialog is better, “i guess we’re both disappointed in each other then” vs jumping straight to you wanted to get rid of me -the way ellie says “i’m not her you know” is sad in the game vs annoyed in the show which chances the entire context of the sentence -joel’s response in the game is better saying “ellie your on thin ice” in a voice that can barely get it out vs stop don’t say another word sounds more mean than the hurt voice the game portrays -ellie looks more sad like she’s about to cry in the game -we don’t get resolution in the game to the argument because it gets cut off by a fight while in the movie joel and just leaves like a jerk. -no long horse ride with the elephant in the room dragging out the tension while in the movie they just wake up and say we’re leaving and all the action happens in the stables before they get in the horses -Then when they get to the decision point in the game it’s way more impactful because joel tells tommy no i’ll take her regardless of whether it’s the smarter decision vs the movie where joel give ellie the decision of who to go with which ruins the moment. -also they glossed over maria being mad that tommy would take ellie which is weird -But i did like joel’s and Tommy’s talk better than the game lmao and still love the show🤷♂️ (side note: dang my brain just went off this was supposed to be small lmaoo) Last thing I feel the next episode issues solved all these issues because the roles are almost flipped with ellie being the one that says no i’ll do anything to save your life while thinking about another loved one who she could not save
Well yeah, mostly agree with the comments, but Joel in the series generally has a slightly different character. And then your comments mainly highlight this difference, not make it worse or better :)
The flawed vulnerability of the characters and these heartwarming moments are what made this game so epic. The tv show was good but it couldn't instill the motivation for the bond of Ellie and Joel like the long elaborate montage of seasons the video game story unfolds throughout. These little cut scenes are what weave the story and their relationship together and makes you care about them.
I wouldn't say the show dropped the ball as others seem to think. I think it did a great job.I still prefer the game's version because it's what I know best but I still think Pedro and Bella killed it
@@jannahjones8542 thought the opposite to be honest! The show has done a great job with a lot of subtleties and a development of Joel the game couldn’t manage. Excellent acting from both of them.
damn it , tommy is damn loyal to joel , he do everything to joel , maybe a little fight back but look at how he insisted on helping joel take ellie to the lab
Assuming Tommy did make it to the fireflies I wonder if he would’ve let them kill Ellie knowing Joel cares about her. Idk if he’d resist like Joel did given he used to be a member, and probably knew a lot of them personally
I know you just watched Episode 6. I liked both the game and the show. They're both unique in their own ways. Yes, significantly different, but very well done. Such an impact. P.S. No need to compare at this point.
for the argument of showmanship, the game is really digging, but I think the TV show is just it, tv show. Therefor, their own versions are the best in both media.
It did not. The scenes worked perfectly and made a lot more sense for the show. The game's scene is good for the game but the comments whining about it not being the same are retarded.
Bruh Joel and Ellie should've at least stayed at Tommy's place for the night before departing. How are you gonna arrive at the dam in the morning, fight off bandits, chase after Ellie at noon, fight off more bandits, then return to the dam by sunset, only to leave again immediately? Wash up. Eat supper. Get sleep. THEN leave. Not tonight, but tomorrow (or a few days later). Video game logic man😂
Did the game do it better than the show? Yes. Am I pissed about it? No. I already know noone will live up to the wonderful Troy and Ashley. I see a lot of people nitpicking and complaining about some (though important) lines being cut, while I'm just happy we finally got a decent adaptation. Relax and enjoy the show!
@@jaiviraj Joel and Tommy are hispanic now, Maria used to be a blonde white girl and now is black. Joel's blue eyed blonde daughter suddenly turned mixed. Hey let's not act like there's not something going on here. It's either Neil Druckmann or HBO going for some woke shit. Hey, atleast they will make sure the pedophile is white. If you care about source material, this should bother you as much as the next guy.
@@HentsSauce uhh bud, the fact it was 'uncomfortable' is a YOU problem. Non homophobes would not be uncomfortable lol. Would you be uncomfortable if it would've been a dude and a gal?
@Isty it does matter because if they choose the black and disabled actors because of their disability/race instead of talent, then it's going to affect the quality of the show as it did because Maria and Sam actors were terrible diversity hires
@@MaverickIceman- I thought she did well. Why assume they picked her because she’s black? Did someone tell you that? Would it upset you if someone had blue eyes instead of brown eyes? What if someone was short in the game and they were tall in the show? Who cares what skin color someone has?
@@BoomerPlusUltra that's clearly the only reason. If that episode was made 10 years ago, there's no way she would have been black. That would be like casting Lori from The Walking Dead black
"so don't tell me I would be safer with someone else because the truth is I would just be more scared" And "everyone fucking except you" in my opinion bella kinda made it a little better in my opinion but that's it so far
@@clementine2718 It looks hot, when everyone on the game looks older, and you can see the wrinkles, grey hairs, and liver spots on their skin? Plus, they did change way many characters look outside of aging them up. I like classic the TLOU better!!! LOL!!! Guess it's aesthetics.
@@D12345 yeah that’s called REALISTIC. You’re out here calling natural skin texture ugly lmfao. I’m sure you look exactly like a perfect video game character lmfao.
