this song used to wreck me every time and still does sometimes. Might I recommend listening to the Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield version. It's what I listen to when elliott smith is just too much for me.

@@olivialandon2393 oh my god, I did actually realize that reference at the time but somehow I forgot I did. Taking a fall in Miss misery is more fresh in my mind because I always wondered what taking a fall meant in that context and I had no idea there was a song by that title, to this day I haven't listened to it. But with Angel in the Snow and clementine, I think he just liked to reference it, I don't see a lot depth, perhaps taking a fall is the same way

I completely agree. When I first got into Elliott around 2003, I just downloaded a bunch of tracks not paying attention to which albums they came from, and when I learned this was his posthumous unfinished release(also his least acclaimed) I was floored bc a high percentage of the tracks that connected with me immediately and strongly were from this record

I’d say one of the top three singer-songwriters in my 60 years of listening To the music scene. But Elliot Smith has something even deeper: an understanding of human suffering that he does not try to hide in his songs. That makes them so deeply felt that many people find his music too brutally honest, despite his soft voice. When I first discovered his music around 2007 I was shocked. I’d never heard anything like them. His occasional mention of suicide seemed to be a theme he came back to again and again and in the song Happiness, he speaks to us from the grave. Elliott Smith, he brought us songs that many of us will never forget. One of the greats !!!!!

It just leaves you wanting more in the best way. It's so tasteful and poignant. Doesn't overstay its welcome. The lyrics are expressive and creative and could have multiple meanings but while also being easy to understand and unpretentious.

+art garfunkel i agree with everything you said, except for the useless part. isn't all of that exactly what makes him extremely useful to all of us? and that his great purpose lived in making beautifully crafted music that resulted in the connection he gave to all of us and giving us a home in something so beautiful indefinitely?

john stewart Meyer - Although I think we need to be objective and get away from allowing the circumstances surrounding Elliott’s last years and his passing which tend to affect his legacy from a critical standpoint... It’s also important to be accurate and objective about his passing. Elliott Smith died from exsanguination (blood loss) with two knife lacerations in his chest. That’s his cause of death. His manner of death remains undetermined. He didn’t “pass out”. He bled to death from stab wounds and either committed suicide or was a victim of a homicide. To be interested in finding out does involve asking critical questions about what happened. The case is still open and homicide has no statute of limitations. Jennifer Chiba has always been under a cloud of suspicion. I can maintain my interest in his music and also hope that more definitive answers will be provided. Part of that comes from those who encourage the authorities to not forget about this case.

I've read so much about what happened that day and what was going on in the months before his death that it just sounds more likely to have been a suicide. I don't think he necessarily wanted to die; I think it was a momentary lapse of sanity from the stress of the argument and the mix of psychotropic meds, some which he hadn't taken the correct doses of.
