@Garrett I hear ya. Elliott was real. He loved his music but he was so uncomfortable around crowds. Must have been real hard on him yanno. Wanting to share his music but at the same time hating the limelight. But no matter how high he was or how hard he slammed he was hella sexy and so fucking real. RIP Elliott , We still love you.

He had made some mistakes throughout the show. And to a musician that is catastrophic. All my friends were in bands back in high school, and coming off a set, they ONLY ever cursed their performances. You would have thought they pissed on the crowd after a rack of Natty Ice. And they sounded great. But not perfect. He had screwed up, so already being over this disaster area of a stage and ready to call it, he figured the crowd would be just as offended as he was. (My little scenario wound up in my head..!) He probably got worried everyone was bored...🤦🏼‍♂️🙍🏼oh Elliott. We would have stayed for days. You needn't have ever even asked. Didn't you know that?

At live performances, Ashley Welch and Chiba had gotten into the habit of shouting "Because we love you" from offstage."

@@RustinChole Elliott was recently sober at this point. That's why he seems such a mess. After quitting drugs at the rate that Elliott went, you're entirely a wreck for months. There is a stark contrast between "Elliott can't perform well because he's wasted off his face" and "Elliott can't perform well because he's in withdrawals/newly, terrifyingly sober". I wish people would stop assuming that whenever Elliott would flub a line or miss a chord in his whole career that it was because he was intoxicated. R.I.P.
@itsgonnbeok7249
@itsgonnbeok7249 4 года назад
@@user-xn1xd4mg4j You are wrong. Elliott was absolutely not recently sober at this point. And nobody is saying he's intoxicated because he messed up a lyric or a chord, theyre saying it because he is clearly intoxicated. This was near the end of his crack/heroin period, he cleaned up a few months later. He is so obviously on some sort of cocktail in this footage. His mannerisms and speech are a dead giveaway. He sounds like he has been up for days, and that was normal for him at this point in his career. He was recording the FABOTH tracks while binging on crack/coke, heroin and alcohol in 2002 into 2003. He was a paranoid wreck until he started doing that alternative rehab thing in 2003. Anybody who has heavily used stimulants can tell he is tweaking in this footage. This is the way people act when they have been up for days. They are twitchy, their words come out all jumbled, and they cant talk very loud or clearly at all. I hate making comments like this because I dont want people to think im trying to tear him down or discredit his work, but its just so absurdly untrue that he is sober in this performance. You should read "Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing".

Elliott Smith helps me keep in touch with my humanity each time I listen to him. He expressed complex feelings with such lucidity as if he'd done the rough psychotherapy for you, but the praise meant nothing to him, he just had to do it. For those that think he didn't have enough "backbone" coz of how his life ended or for any other reason, you just didn't appreciate what he gave. He was for real, maybe too dam for real which I'd take any day over the mainstream, superficial crap out there that all sounds the same. Despite how he left this planet, when he was here, he was ALIVE. What a great performance.

Couldn't have said it better bro. Let's remember this guy for what he did when he was alive. and not for how he died. This man seemed to be too sensitive for this world. You can tell his soul was from outter space. The poetry and the melody on his music evidence it. This place is ruled by empty-minded, cruel people trying to manipulate the shit out of the youth and pretty much getting to it most of the times. It's sad because you realize this was definetely not the place for such a sensitive soul. His music will always light our existence.

He was heckled HARD at this show. It sucked. But yeah. The decision to play a ton of unfamiliar songs for an audience is a risky move. I think he just wanted to play. Period. He operated by following his own ideas, that's what made him great. He never gets enough credit for being more than a musical genius. The amount of vulnerability and range of emotion. The amount if reflection and poetry and ability to put his feelings into words. The amount of bullshit he could see through with entertainment or the govnt, ego, relationships, affiction, etc.. Quite honestly the Indie scene coulda been a full blown culture shift lead by music once again. But this man honestly never coulda been that leader. They killed him just in case just like Kurt. Maybe it was dealers. Who knows. But he's the closest and purest thing we have had in a very long time. All the stuff he brings up are hot topics being addressed today on a wide scale. He is an example of our culture's desperation to make mental health an awareness 17 years ago. But it took a long time for that awareness to be in home awareness. And it still needs more attention

I know it’s a romantic thing to look at it from the perspective you illustrated, but as someone who went through heroin addiction that cost me talent as well as a lot of other stuff, largely started by the fact that every artist I love used at one time or another, there’s nothing good about it. I would’ve loved to get a hug from someone like Elliott, and I have a feeling that when he hugged you, it was just as much for him as it was for you.

Pretty awesome that you can hear his girlfriend screaming "because we love you" during King's Crossing. I read that in in Elliott Smith and the Big Nothing that she would yell that after the line "give me one good reason not do it." After he felt no one cared anymore he added the line, "so do it."

It's a HUGE misconception to assume that he was high during this show, and that's the reason he was so shaky. It's quite the opposite. Elliott spent years performing and recording while high on opiates and/or amphetamines, and he sounded great. Just listen to his records and shows from those periods. Speaking as a musician/drug user, you get accustomed to playing better high. Music is like many things - you're at your best when body and mind are relaxed, at peace. I'm not glorifying drugs, that's just how functioning addicts roll. My point is, Elliott was trying to clean up during this time, and after years of dependence, performing sober probably made him anxious and uncomfortable. Trust me, if you're used to performing high all the time, doing it sober can be extremely fuckin' difficult. Any longtime addict-musician can vouch.

@DylG1111 9 лет назад
King Complex I respectively disagree. Stimulants, mainly amphetamines can open up your throat and vocal chords, so people on amphetamines and alcohol seem to perform fine. However opiates kill your voice... I really feel like that is the case here. If he was this shaky from withdrawal he wouldn't have performed at all.

King Complex The fact is Elliot was failing health wise body, mind and soul at this point due to the excesses of his drug use. I too am (currently former) heavy user of drugs and a musician. And can agree with you on certain points, but when you are eaten up and struggling as deeply as he was at this point in his life the drugs are not enhancing anything. At this point in time the drugs were using Elliot.

He’s even the best here. I miss him so much. Breaks my heart. So unbelievably talented. For me he surpassed all his heroes… When he’s on it no one can touch him. When he’s vulnerable like this performance his work is still better than the shit around today. It’s really hard to play like him and sing dead pan. Lyrically , he was more advanced than the best of them. Thanks Elliott, you and Frusciante saved me. You’re my spirit guides …Thankyou

I am one of those people like a lot of yall that drool and relish over recordings like this. I have this one broken down in my phone and i used to sleep to it. I write songs and have for years,, and I've used some of his banter as inspiration for things. Elliott was a goddamn musical genius. He's one of those people I feel like I've met though I know I never met, through his fucking music. I've met some of those people over the years, where I know I've met them despite not having met them really, not really at least, and listening to things like this remind me of that. Elliott had the light. Rushing light for sure, but he had the light. Thank you so much Elliott for all the light you've given to people. I hope anyone who listens to this can make things and try and shine this bright! Cuz he fucking did it. He did it. Try and catch that fuckin light I saw this post on reddit recently that asked how did you first hear elliott. i know a lot of old heads are here that have all the stories. I can remember distinctly. My memory is kinda a weird blessing and curse tbh. but here we are. I was sitting in my living room. I had these portable big speakers that were super fun for all of us. And my very very good friend put him on, and it damn near broke me. That was over 15 years ago, and I don't I'll ever stop : ) please tell us how you know him and his music cuz it is something that goes above a lot of bs. please tell the stories!

Really? Most fans that I’ve spoken with never talk about the way he, “felt” more so on how his music “felt” to us. I think that’s the whole misconception. I never add comments but I been up all night and need to say this..I remember the 1st time I saw elliot oscar's 98 I was 12yrs old and thought why am I so drawn to this fascinating guy in this whit suit singing this beautiful song, he is a genre of his own. He is not traditionally "handsome" but was somehow his talent, honesty and raw vulnerability made him the most beautiful person in the world. I had no clue then that role he would play in my life. I grew up to be a heroin and amphetamines addict like him so I always feel we going through it together I am always blown away from the indescribable emotions he brings out of those of us tortured souls seeing the same pain in him but he could put in in words that amazed me. It's truly a gift to sound so beautiful singing about being dopesick! As a drug addict I tend to isolate and the 1 constant in my life has been his music it has gotten me through the darkest times alone. I am so grateful for finding him when I did. Him playing guitar and awkward singing is a truly amazing thing to get to witness. I can relate to his pain, his pain wasnt for nothing it saved me time and time again he is always there. He made me feel when I was numb, for that I am forever in debt, grateful. Best musician of all time no one can touch him, even his death was beautiful, he truly was a miracle to put pain into such deep beautiful words. Thanks you Elliott, your beautiful I love you

I don't care if he was on drugs or off drugs - either way he just plain ruled. What bothers me is seeing Chiba lurking , and the obvious distress he went through before playing I Better Be Quiet Now. I know , no one wants anyone to mention the dubious circumstances surrounding his death, and his relationship with Chiba. Because I love his music so much I will always feel like he didn't receive his just do by getting a genuine investigation into his death. He deserved better.

Also, it's amazing how he remembers all of his lyrics. Even with the slight mess ups it's still incredibly impressive. I can't even memorize like 5 of them and play them consecutively

i have mixed feelings about this show. watching it is bringing me more sadness than joy. people have said that he was battling with withdrawal symptoms which is why he sounds shakier than usual and why his playing is sloppier but idk he does sound more like he's intoxicated, likely drunk. either way, it's still elliott and he was doing his very best in spite of whatever was happening inside him. i'm glad that for the most part, the crowd was still supportive. it was shows like this one where he needed compassion and patience more than ever. how i wish that i could've also been there to reassure him and tell him that he was doing well. btw, its interesting to see people interpret his "itll be gone in 6 months" when talking about his bracelet as a subtle hint at impending suicide instead of nothing more than him saying that the bracelet will be beyond repair in half a year.

@Green Rocky Road i see. i've always wondered when he properly started cleaning up but i'm guessing that it was probably around may-june 2003. yeah, he does definitely sound better, although watching his later shows does make me feel a bit sad. the one at redfest is really difficult for me to watch. he didn't seem intoxicated there at all, in fact, that might've been his most sober show that year but you can tell how much he hated messing up. i assume that messing up when using would take less of a toll because the substances are able to act as a buffer but sobriety doesn't offer anything to cushion those feelings. you have to deal with them as they come. at points in the show he just seems so embarrassed by his mistakes. thankfully the crowd were patient and reassuring but it still can't have been easy to cope with
