Listening to Elliott Smith in the moments of lack of inspiration, unclear times and when being lonely. He touches my heart so much. I believe he's an angel that lived on earth among humans for some time and shared some secret tunes and touching masterpieces with us; yet that was tough and he left us so early. He is a thing.
@Green Rocky Road humans are irrational beings so in that sense it does (make sense) It's cult behaviour. Worshipping people after death. Martyrdom, etc. Kurt Cobain another example. The cult of Kurt. The sofa he sat on once when he was 17 going for hundreds of thousands of dollars on ebay is similar to people making pilgrimages to touch relics of humans who have been given sainthood in death.
Some souls are just too pure for this existence. If you can’t wrap your head around that concept then listen to Elliott’s opinion on just about anything. Watch him while he speaks and then listen to a song. So kind, genuine and unassuming and those traits left him so anxious, lonely and helpless. He managed his way through as best he could and we are forever grateful of that every single time we hear his musical genius today in his work.
@@Trenzalore-gn6xq His childhood trauma destroyed him and it was far from his "best trait." So many people assume that Smith was this guy who just couldn't handle the state of the world or the human condition or something. That isn't why he struggled with depression. He was abused horrifically by his stepfather when he was still living in Texas as a child, which is why he moved to Portland as a teenager to live with his biological father and his stepmother. I'm sure his stepfather loves the fact that people think Smith just couldn't deal; it takes the blame off of where it belongs which is squarely on his shoulders.
@@Trenzalore-gn6xq If you'd rather have your "torment saint" than spend a half hour on Google then I'm not going to spoon-feed you; you don't cast pearls before swine.
@@wsieber89 It'd be nice, but I don't see how it could happen. Looking back, it's bizarre that she was chosen as the avatar for those "PC Liberal Zombie" impact text memes, given how reasonable she was when speaking out against the Iraq war. It seems like it cost her a career too (in terms of being America's Beta Female Sweetheart).
This is a truly outstanding comment-- exceedingly rare on YT. While it seems clear that Elliott was very uncomfortable during most interviews, I still find it a little funny/sad that he's almost unable to form sentences when in front of a camera, yet he was capable of writing such brilliant, complex and inspiring lyrics.
I love it when Elliott says, “I don’t know, I just do it myself because I like to play the different instruments, and you can’t get better at things you never play.” I love it because I'm determined like that, so i can understand that.
I remember when this aired I taped it but unfortunately lost the tape. I also remember that he performed "Miss Misery" and it was placed at the end of the show when the credits rolled. I used to see him play all the time when he moved to LA and also saw him in person at various places in Los Angeles. I so regret not talking to him or even approaching him but he always had this intense cloud of privacy hanging over him that it made it seem wrong to disturb him if that makes any sense.
Patrick Chole lol my guess would be that you didn’t note the “6 years ago” (Sept 2013) in the comment heading Also, October isn’t “early 2003”. But thanks for playing bro!
@@waxcritic you’re right tho I saw the date of your comment, I thought you meant since he died. We’re almost at 20 now.😞 But you’re right my bad. Hope you’re having a good one.
You don't become an addict by getting high for no reason besides having fun. You become an addict because life is shit and it's the only way you can cope.
Very odd English - I’m not sure what you mean. What I would say though, is that there are about as many reasons for taking drugs as there are people - add the genetic component, and things become complex.
Some addicts definitely seem to disagree. Some kids are just very experimental and risky, and get addicted even though nothing is wrong, so they say. This may be only a small portion of people, if it’s true. It’s certainly not something I understand.
Love both of these folks. He seems so sweet & shy. Was such a cute boy until drugs & alcohol ruined his looks. I think he was so sensitive, it was difficult for him to live in a hard world...and that's why he left us.
It bothers me so much that people think he was just some guy who couldn't deal with life. He was horrifically abused as a child, and you probably have way less in common with him than you think. So many weak people identify with him because they think he was just this guy who was depressed about everything.
@@claudiomargheri2087 The more I read the comment the more angry it makes me. He "ruined his looks," yet Ashley Welch looks JUST like him despite never doing drugs.
True, Ive seen 5 david dondero shows, and ive talked to him twice, slurring my words and being too quite. Its nerve racking when you meet someone you think is amazing.
@purplehaze0120 He did. do a search here on youtube for "elliott smith interview on much music and performance of waltz#2 PART 2" He specifically says he was tired of playing it.
@aficionado79 It does. I used to play a lot of shows and people that I never knew would come up to me to say hi whenever they'd see me in random places. At first, it was really flattering. but then starts to bother you when it happens often, though you'll still be polite becasue you don't want to feel rude. After those expieriences anytime I'd see someone that I'd recognize, I'd initially want to say hi but was afraid to, cause I'd feel like I was bothering them too. I am so jealous of you tho
He seems relatively comfortable with Janeane. But you can tell he doesn't like to do this sorta thing. He's always like, "It's so uncomplicated" like I play music cuz I like it. Lol idk if you've seen the little video they had him make on tips for songwriting and he's just like, I play something I like then another thing then the rest is just implied. It's not super helpful. But I get what he means.
@tomthefunky Actually, they couldn't tell for sure. Because apparently there always has to be mystery around the deaths of musicians and celebrities, if you could call him that. I wouldn't be surprised.
@tomthefunky Apparently he stabbed himself twice, his girlfriend said they had a fight, and she locked herself in the bathroom. When she came out, he had apparently done it and she had pulled the knife out of his chest. Ignoring the incredibly flimsy excuse for having her DNA on the knife (and lame general story) He apparently left a suicide note, which is apparently very unlike him, especially the generic message that was on it. His audience consists of people saying "omg I want to hug him!"
@staphinfection Well he got clean before he died, if that counts for anything. He was planning to come back with some music, then he died strangely, be it suicide or murder.
mark hartmann Though I would like for you to be correct, I think this particular interview with Janean happened before the incident with the heckler telling Elliott to "Get A Back Bone".
Janeane was just teasing a bit about how he was a little slumped over sitting next to her. Harmless banter, which is exactly how Elliott took it. "I'm _feeling_ good..."
Huge fan of Elliott, but... come on, Garofalo and Smith in the same room? This video could not get any more Gen X even if had Denis Leary wearing Dr. Martens and David Foster Wallace wearing his bandana while smoking in the background.
