this was ripped from one of the rarest tv pilots around, the jon brion show! jon brion shot this pilot back in 1999 for vh1 and it includes jon performing with friends in a largo type of setting like jon usually does at largo. well, elliott was one of the performers featured in the pilot and the pilot includes 2 scenes. one short moment with jon and elliott trying to work out a version of say yes and a performance of elliott doing 'see you later!'

I was at this taping.....very close to the stage...I knew little of Elliott until this night....this very performance made me a fan.

Lucky. The only reason I wanted to make music and become a musician only through life is this man. I didn’t hear his music until the year after his death. Would’ve loved to of seen him.

I didn’t get into Smith’s solo stuff until after he died. But I was fortunate enough to grow up on Heatmiser, and saw them a handful of times at La Luna in Portland Oregon in the early / mid nineties, usually with a few of my close friends in tow. This song hits me pretty hard... It was one of the first songs I thought of when my best friend passed unexpectedly just over 5 years ago. If you love someone, just tell them so. Because we never know.

This song was originally released on the Heatmiser album "Mic City Sons." For those of you who have never heard the band or didn't know that Elliot was in the band, do yourself a favor and go buy their albums! They are excellent. "Mic City Sons" is a masterpiece, which also included the work of Neil Gust(vocals/guitars), Sam Coomes(Bass), and Tony Lash(drums). Most people from Portland still mourn the loss of this excellent band!

night train is cheap alcohol, drinking it to forget about a girl. this guy hits me on a personal level every time..at first I only liked 1 or 2 songs back in 2012..then depression hit in 2013 followed by alcoholism. now I'm in love with this man and his music

The Guitar and Vocals are absolutely perfect on this... my favorite version of this song and possibly my favorite live elliott performance.

Elliott Smith first instrument was actually the piano. Elliott likes to play lots of melodies on top of his chords at the same time. I think thats why he approaches the guitar like he's playing the piano.

This is awesome. This is the Heatmiser version. Although it is top, I LOVE his own version with the lyrics "Just to find you with your master minder, Running your affairs,, Saying how you're better now, Since it killed all your other cares" Absolute magic.

Which one?
@GriffinU
@GriffinU Год назад
@@tyleragnew Hahaha, good question. 12 years later, I'm not even sure what I was referring to here. He's in a different tuning here for sure (two whole steps below standard? Too lazy to tune my guitar to find out). He plays an Em shaped chord on what sounds like a Cmaj), but if you were to play it in standard, I was probably referring to 3x0003 -> 3x2013 hammer on chord progression that starts the song off.

Thanks for posting this. From the first time I heard this tune, which was quite recently,(I'm a little late to the Elliott Smith party I'm afraid) I've loved it. I'd love it if you did a cover. I loved your Sparklehorse cover and I learned how to play it from watching you do it. Could use your help figuring this one out as well.

@MrTommyTinkles the weird quality comes from the fishman pickups he uses... also i think some of the strings were a little out of tune. but i heard while recording basement he would tune some strings a little sharp to get a stomach wrenching sound out of the boy

If you listen closely, the "guitar" also produces some sort of sounds. I know because I have heard many sounds before, so I am an expert on sounds.

Elliott has quite a penchant for producing sweet sounds from this "guitar," or so I would assume this is the prefered nomenclature. Alas I must concede my knowledge of sounds pales in comparison to Goylesk, the expert on sounds.
