I discovered elliott while massively depressed. At the time I listened to his music to lose myself in the songs of someone I felt understood me. After getting huge amounts for help from my family and therapy I came back to these songs and realized elliott tells you how he feels during his darkest moments yes but he always hides a hit of hope deep in the song

Elliott's strength was in his harmonies. I remember a video from 14 years ago or so where he explained he liked using "implied melodies" via the harmony, where he set up and supported the main tune with 'implied'' chords. Something along those lines. If you've tried to play this song around a campfire you know what I'm talking about. Brilliant musician, traditional enough to be relatable to every man but subtle enough in his innovation to keep you coming back for more and more. RIP Elliott

i'm not someone who listens to lots of music, i don't really have favorites or go through discographies. i met elliott's work a few months ago - no one showed him to me, i find out and went curious to get to know more about him. i've never felt more understood than the way i feel listening to his songs. i struggle with anxiety and depression and i'm going through a lot of things, rough things, for the last eight or so months. it's almost 4am, i still haven't got any sleep - i haven't got any sleep for 3 days now. these days i've been missing the inocence of childhood, bad things still happened, but i had hope, i was innocent, happy. growing up, realizing that the world is a cruel, corrupted place. everyone's unhappy, everyone is taking drugs and having sex and drinking and looking for momentaneum pleasures to ease the pain, to fill a void. people cheat, people lie, people steal. injustice happens, and it's not right, fair or normal. but we all pretend is part of normalcy. this year, i felt what true, adulthood life, really feels like. when i was a teenager, i used to feel like the world was in my hands, but this world i could physically hold was also in midst of destruction. now i just feel that hope it's gone, the battle of survival. i think elliott better than anyone made me feel understood, i never saw a better representation of addiction if not between the bars. i feel alone, loneliness certantly knows my name. i'm slowly losing my best friend, the person that once made me feel like i wasn't alone, like i could fit in, like i was accepted. i don't know what to do. the pain of losing a twin flame. people change, from people we know to become who we don't. giving up even crossed my mind, but i won't. i think there's hope in each one of his songs. almost everyday i listen to say yes, and i'll always sing along but now i feel changed around, and instead of falling down, i'm standing up the morning after.

It was like getting insight into the girl who was still there the morning after. 3 wonderful years I wouldnt trade for anything in the world. I hope your well and found whatever you were looking for. We broke up about a month ago after 4 years. She was my crutch… a drug, and filled a void in me that I now realize I needed to fill myself. I can’t explain how much I relate to Elliott’s sentiments on this song. Having that kind of hope for something that was as meaningless as some drunken one night stand. Dependence is so scary and damaging when the rug gets pulled out from underneath you. You can fantasize all you want about the way things could be… maybe if she just said yes things could’ve been so different and I wouldn’t hurt so bad…but to hope for something like that is to see the world through the eyes of a girl who’s still around the morning after. It’s naive and unrealistic. “Situations get fucked up and changed around, sooner or later” change is so fucking scary but it comes!
