From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island, located in New York Harbor, served as the main immigration facility for Americans. At first, the size of the island was only three acres, but land reclamation allowed it to develop to approximately 27 acres. Ellis Island handled millions of immigrants, primarily from Europe, who came to America for new opportunities between 1900 and 1914 when it was at its busiest. Inspectors examined more than 12 million immigrants to ascertain their eligibility for entry through medical and legal exams.
As the "Gateway to America," Ellis Island also gained notoriety as the "Island of Tears" for imprisoned or expelled individuals. For many, the island represented optimism and the possibility of a new life despite its function as a screening ground for immigrants. The site of Ellis Island fell into disrepair when it was shut down as an immigration station in 1954 and was only rebuilt and reopened as a museum in 1990. It is a potent reminder of how immigrants shaped American history and is now a part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
