Is it possible to break one of these from pushing on it too hard when it was locked if there is no physical damage to the lock?

No physical damage from the lock. Only the frame door will be damaged.

What could be the problem other then the switch if the magnetic de energize time is long

Just double check the contact of the switch...and check the response of solenoid...
