If you mean the dark heat-shield tiles, I don't think we know for certain. There are some rumblings that it's a NASA tech from the shuttle days called TUFI, but with a slightly different formulation. Underneath that, between the steel ship and the tiles, there is some special flexible ceramic fiber mat that can stand intense heat. SpaceX makes these tiles themself in a factory they call "the bakery". Cool stuff! (You might have asked about some other part, but figured I'll answer about the tiles just in case)

The real future is the past,it is the way the space shuttle lands,like an airplane!
@ScentlessSun
@ScentlessSun 14 часов назад
No current spacecraft land like airplanes for the following reasons: The complexity and cost: Runway landings like the Space Shuttle’s require significant infrastructure and complex thermal protection systems. These systems increase the cost and risk of damage, as seen with the Shuttle’s vulnerable heat shield tiles. There are simpler alternatives: Parachute-based landings (like Crew Dragon and Soyuz) are simpler and more cost-effective. While less precise, these methods have a strong safety record and require fewer ground-based resources. SpaceX’s reusability innovations have demonstrated the benefits of other approaches: SpaceX’s approach of powered vertical landings (like Starship plans to use) aims to achieve the benefits of reusability without the complexity of runway landings, offering the possibility of rapidly reusable spacecraft. While the Space Shuttle was unique in its airplane-like runway landings and fun to watch, modern spacecraft prioritize simpler, safer, and more cost-effective landing techniques.

The space shuttle used massive rocket boosters to get into orbit. Those rocket boosters are way too big and putting wings and a tail on it would make it too heavy to lift off.

Sorry, but millions of people will never live on Mars. The very low atmospheric pressure of the Martian atmosphere, which lacks any free oxygen, will make it a financially impossibility. Despite what you see in Hollywood movies, producing food at scale on Mars will always be impossible. The needed raw materials don't exist on Mars, and the surface is far too cold to grow anything. There is no fresh water on Mars, and what little water there is, remains frozen in permafrost nearly as hard as concrete. Just keeping from freezing every night would require enormous amounts of energy. With no fossil fuels, and occasional planet wide dust storms, what is the plan to produce that energy. Windmills don't work in a near vacuum. And if the money could be found to supply Mars with essential goods from Earth for centuries, the thousands of rocket launches needed to support even a moderate sized Mars colony, would severely pollute Earth's atmosphere with the global warming gas of carbon dioxide. When methane is burned inside a rocket engine it produces carbon dioxide and water vapor. And will gestation work in 40% of Earth's gravity? Humans evolved in 1 G, not in 0.4 G. I would bet that weaker gravity will cause problems while trying to reproduce on Mars. Many other obstacles exist. Think about all the stuff you consume every day, and how it is made. You consume WAY more energy and goods than you realize. Produce more waste too.

Second stage came to zero velocity before splash down because it was a test like the ones before it. The did the same with 1st stage (booster) on the 4th try before attempting catching it. Trial, progress, error rinse, and repeat.

@@atmos1x The sea is the "SAFEST" place to land an experimental spacecraft until it is proven to be reliable. All previous booster landed in the sea before the first attempt at catching it. You don't want to kill people when testing experimental craft. The sea landing was very intentional.

Imagine it's the year 1900. Transportation for the majority of people is still the horse and buggy. In 1928, an airplane flew non-stop from Europe to North America.
