It's fascinating that Musk's team had to design every part of the Optimus robot from scratch, especially the actuators and hands. But does this push towards highly specialized components overlook the potential benefits of standardization in robotics? By reinventing the wheel, are we missing out on the efficiency and innovation that comes from shared technology standards? What do you all think - is bespoke design the future of robotics, or should there be more focus on universal components?
@angryguymwa
@angryguymwa 6 месяцев назад
Elon is the kind of guy to make patents for all these innovations free to use which then leads to the parts becoming standard, which then further drivers down the manufacturing cost for Tesla, and also creates an opportunity for Tesla to make money from other makers by providing parts or services (like charging stations) that others don't have the resources to build.

He clearly thinks homemade is better i.e. more suited and more efficient. Given his record in mass production, they will be cheap. Note that Dyson also make their own motors.
@Tooradj
@Tooradj 6 месяцев назад
Benefit for consumers does not always line up with benefits for manufacturers. Obviously less dependence on third party means more secure operations for Tesla. If they are getting a motor from Ukraine, …. you know. Also they can increase their profit margin if the motor manufacturer is not making that profit and it is made in house. Optimus is designed to be flexible so it will probably be everywhere in a decade or so. If it was ready to go today, hooked up to a functional AI, UAW negotiations could go differently. Imagine 10 years from now when a lot of us are replaced by Optimus and it started having motor problems. Setting the price for that motor could provide a nice second source of revenue for Tesla. I am sure there is something to what Elon says about needing to design for specific use but I doubt that is the full story.

The Twitter purchase was ingenious. X can and should be used to train Optimus just like all the data the Tesla vehicles collects trains FSD. The purchase was worth it for the data set alone, then when you also consider he locked down reliable, worldwide communications via the combination of X and Starlink. I think in time we will see what a great deal he got, in the long run. In my opinion, for both FSD & AGI it's a matter of data & compute quality & quantity. He who has the best data set will win. I am not sure about hte argument that the robot would be cheaper because it is smaller than the car. If you look at luxury watches, those are so expensive precisely because manufacturing something so precise in a tiny scale is extremely difficult. This robot has to have way tighter tolerances than your run of the mill Tesla. And it is going to be a luxury product for actual regular people. Companies could easily afford it, but they could also easily pay hundreds of thousands and still be profitable.
