It’s really important to get legal storage in the hands of consumers. The power & nat gas company I work for (and the rest of investor owned utilities) are trying to maintain their monopoly and control of the production and supply 😮

The Australian electricity grid is 1 million km. To 20 million buildings. $ 1 million per km the nuclear promoters say for new grid. "So, nuclear at the existing fossil fueled generation plant is the only economic way. $millions saved on new grid construction." The promoters say. So, nuclear promoters are saying that the grids value is $1 TRILLION. If 100% electric then $TRILLIONS and $TRILLIONS more needs to be spent on the national grid capacity. Customer storage is the only thing that makes sense. Vehicles are parked 23hrs every day. EV big batteries are perfect for daily storage. And maximise the utility factor of the vehicle investment. And rooftop PV investment. And protects the grid.

Direct connection can be anywhere on the transmission lines. The 1,700 transmission towers out to the Australian gold fields can have batteries at any point along the line, at each town along its length. Solar farms along its length at each town mean grid backup to everyone along the line. Each town can be part offgrid, and unload the transmission lines. Grid is protected, and backup supply.

I think decentralization is the key. There are 2 possibilities, one commercial, and one consumer. You've covered the commercial aspects, but the market for the consumer systems, decentralized into very small sub stations, or even on a single user basis. Every single person could benefit from systems designed for homes, small homes, and apartments. Lots of employment opportunities!
@tessjuel
@tessjuel 3 месяца назад
Decentralized energy production and storage is the best solution from the consumers' point of view, from a social economic point of view and from an enviormental point of view. It's not very likely to happen though because it's not in the interest of the big corporations and they are the ones who call the shots. They want to control the power supply and be able to out-compete smaller operators and the more it is spread out, the harder it is for them to do so.

@@tessjuelIf they are given a legal monopoly, everything they do is regulated by the government in exchange. @@tessjuel So, the answer is obvious. Build out, or support small solar companies who fall outside the corporate sphere. I'm continuing to add on to my solar system and will do so until my energy bill is zero. But, I didn't ask for permission from anyone, and when we convince people that they too can sidestep the corporate control, we will achieve the independence we are looking for. Freedom is never given to you freely, you have to take it!

Centralized electricity production and distribution was essential in developing farming and industry. Before that, farmers and manufacturers had to develop their own power sources, windmills, with varying degrees of success. The same for homes too. Producing electricity can be dangerous and maintenance expensive. Relying on the untrained and inexperienced homeowners to install and maintain their own systems could endanger their whole neighborhood.

Hi Sam I live in Adelaide the companies are making huge money and yet all of Adelaide's power bills are ridiculously high. When wind and solar isnt generating enough is bought from interstate at a premium yes they increased to battery storage to make more money for the company it wasnt passed onto the people. Battery stations strength is that they have ability to instantly regulate power, both up and down. That is a useful feature to stabilize the grid in the short term, from sub second to a few hours top. The drawback is that they don't produce any power and they are really expensive. They do make sense if you have poor system stability with lots of weather dependent production and no cheaper way to get the stability you need. The trick is to never get to that position. If you don't have enough production that you can plan there will be times when the weather is unfavourable, like when Adelaide gets a heat spell and most people want to run the AC. There are essentially two outcomes, either you need to bring down consumption or you will get blackouts. There are several ways to bring down consumption, like price going up a lot or controlled rolling blackouts or deal with large consumers to stop their business for a pre-agreed sum of money. Having an unstable energy system usually comes with connections to places with more stable grids. That means you are taking advantage of their grid stability because you did not want to pay for your own. In Europe we have seen huge number of problems in the grids including blackouts since the percentage of unpredictable power generation has increased.

No, your excess power is worth very little because it comes in the middle of the day when all the solar panels are producing power full tilt, and residential demand is not high. No, Adelaide is not "the only city in the world to run only on renewables". Adelaide city council purchases "green power" for its council owned buildings and facilities. It doesn't mean the whole city is run on renewable power. It just means the council pays a bit more for electricity and its usage is allocated or offset to renewable sources. I can do the same thing but it doesn't change where my power comes from. The power lines still come from the giant gas fired power plants as well as the solar farm and wind farms. The councils usage is also a tiny fraction of the total power a city uses. If the city had been completely powered by renewables and the battery system it would have been a real disaster when the battery caught fire in 2022 wouldn't it. The battery systems are just buffers for the normal grid system so they don't have to spool generation up and down so fast, which can lead to blackouts.

Recently the output from NIF fusion ignition has steadily been reproduced with AI assistance. Tesla seriously needs to start to corner the market on fusion and compact fusion, further democratizing energy production that is clean and safe. I seriously think Tesla with Elon Musk will be the dominant player in the overall car market and energy supplier market. Mark my words. But he needs to make up and collaborate with OpenAI and Apple, and Google. And this is not even including the maximum potential of SpaceX and Neuralink (with advanced healthcare youth/longevity technologies)

How often do these batteries need to be replaced? What's the footprint of having batteries, solar panels, wind turbines and dams vs a typical power plant? I have a feeling this would not be possible in most places simply because of the amount of space it would take to be 100% renewable. I haven't even mentioned disposal, which is impossible for some things like wind turbine blades.

We actually need an affordable alternative to Tesla big batteries! Here in California, our electricity monopolies are corrupt, price gouging cartels. The stranglehold of the predatory cartels comes from their monopoly over electricity production and distribution. Big batteries attached to extremely expensive to maintain electrical distribution grids will just strengthen the cartel. PG&E, SDGE and Edison actually killed off the home solar panel retrofit installation industry in California because they didn’t want the competition. Now, people in most of the world can buy a 30 kWh battery with an entire, attached car, an entire car, for less than the price of a Tesla Powerwall! Powerwalls cost over $1,000 per kWh installed. We need big, heavy, ugly, safe and long lasting home storage batteries for less than $100 per kWh. That’s weaken two demons, Musk and the price gouging electricity cartels!

The sub stations are the reason modern electrical systems are so clunky, they also take up basically all the transformers Amusingly, they are also a limitation in AI, which draws more and more power from the grid Substations and our outdated electrical systems have been the biggest critique of plans for electrification, if the new powerwall actually addresses that issue, that would be the last major hurdle in the face of green electrification

Edit, from the looks of things, the batteries do not need an inverter for themselves directly, but the grid will still need them, meaning it is a major bottleneck, but it will be twice as easy/cost-effective to add these megapacks to the grid, so you can save the inverters for residential and commercial applications and power stations

So, nuclear at the existing fossil fueled generation plant is the only economic way. $millions saved on new grid construction. So, nuclear promoters are saying that the grids value is $1 TRILLION. If 100% electric then $TRILLIONS and $TRILLIONS more needs to be spent on the national grid capacity.

@iandavies4853 you are ignorant. Distribution lines are energised. Suburban streets are in constant use. Increasing capacity in overloaded conductors would be late night shift work. Today's grid is fragile because it is so expensive to build and was built to minimum engineering economic standards. The grid was built over 100 years. These little wire into your home is nothing. Except when you are a farmer that wants town electricity, and you get your quote for supply. Suburban buildings cannot start construction until supply is available.
