Obviously it goes without saying that Carl Palmer is the true ELP drummer but just watching this, Cozy Powell is kicking some major ass on the drums considering that he only made one album with Emerson and Lake but he is showing that he is no slouch at all. Most top drummers would find playing that music with two prog rock icons to be a very intimidating experience but Cozy not only picks up the ball here but he runs all the way to the finish line. ELP or not, this is some of the best music ever written and all three of these guys really worked well together as a tight unit.
I saw this tour in the Meadowlands Arena, New Jersey, just a couple weeks before this video was recorded. The stage and concert looked and sounded exactly like it appears here. This song was the opening number in the NJ show as well, and just like in this video at 3:40, when Lake started singing "What's your game?", the audience broke out cheering like they do here. I think everyone was so glad to hear the greatest voice in rock once again. RIP Greg Lake.
Absolutely killer!!!! I wish they could last longer. Greg and Keith brilliant as usual, and Cozy.... Man, a thunderstorm drummer, the perfect fit for a perfect band. He kicked ass!!!! Looking forward to the CD set.
amazing that emerson in the mid-80s wrote this. the first and last sections are right up there with the horn sections of KE9.. the studio, rehearsals and live versions all have a different feeling, depending on powell's intensity.
I saw that show, one of the best ever. The Fox is a great venue, acoustics! I was the one with the loud whistling at the start and end. I just sat here listening with a tear in my eyes. Such a tragedy, all 3 gone to the great gig in the sky...so much talent...gone.
@@pmfithagree!! After watching this, I say I agree completely. I've been a big Cozy fan all my life, listened to everything he played with Schenker, Blackmore, Beck, Moore and so. By the time he sadly passed, he was rehearsing to play with another great, Yngwie Malmsteen. From heavy metal drummer to play with two genious like Keith and Greg!!! You HAVE to be good indeed!!!
I Saw Elpalmer and ElPowell.Keith the undisputed Master and my shock was Cozy.I've seen almost everyone Jazz and Rock and Blues and huge Santana fan and Cozy blew away every drummer I ever saw including Neil Peart and the many greats who played with Carlos.Just a monster-like Keith!I think he like many actually caught "Lyme" Disease. This was their Opener. As we walked up outside the Boston Operahouse there were 9 semis of equipment and none were intricate staging or special effects! All musical equipment.I can't believe the roof did not blow off.
FFs, thank god someone captured this on video back then, an absolute treasure to see them here killing it with Powell. I have to assume Emerson had at least (2) keyboard techs to assemble that cathedral lol.
Yeah, that was quite a pile. I believe a tech was triggering patch changes offstage; there was so much going on during songs (much less song to song) that it wasn't a good idea to rely on Emerson to do it properly every time.
Saw this tour in Dallas. Although I'd seen ELP many times before with Palmer. Being a drummer myself and Palmer is a tremendous drummer. In my opinion. Cozy brought a power to their live act. That Palmer couldn't hold a candle to!
@@rossb.4773 Palmer too advanced? He had nothing on Cozy. Look who Cozy had played with v/s Carl. No comparison. Carl is a very good drummer, but there are better, and as a musician I can appreciate them both. I prefer Cozy myself for the volume of his diverse work.
Oh my God. I commented this myself 11 years ago. And now, watching again this wonderful performance, I had the impression that it was new to me. Completely forgot. It really is a historic and rare document. Thanks again for the upload, my dear @greenhazel351, and I send you my best energies from Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Gave some spin to this cd today...wish I could have seen them for this tour. I did however see them when they toured with Bonham at the San Antonio Sunken Gardens.
Worked the gig at Brendan Byrne arena NJ in 86, Then sat out at front of house to watch the show. They had the Quad system i.e an separate Audio hang house left and right of the mix position It really added some depth to the show but it could have been utilized more I like the look over to stage right Greg does, then Keith looking back like they're wondering how fast Cozy is gonna go with this tempo at 7:50 !
Saw this tour in MD.... #1 ELPowell WOW, all 3 of them are dead. ((\,,/)) ((\,,/)) Keith Emerson Greg Lake cozy Powell May Heaven allow ROCK&ROLL Music to be played!!! !!! !!!
I was there! What a great show! I think that Powell wasn't a perfect fit, but I greatly prefer him to Palmer. It was such a treat to see Emerson and Lake play with a drummer who wasn't rushing the tempo all the time, and who came in accurately after rests in the music, eg all over Tarkus. Is there more of this?!
OMG, Cozy is killing it!!!! He was a hell of a drummer, this is AMAZING. Keith and Greg (genious!!) made the perfect choice. Wish they coukd make a second album... So sad the three are gone 😢
Cozy had an amazing career playing with many of the greatest musicians of modern history. As a former detroiter I saw some amazing concerts at the Fox theater there. The sound have been far better than this particular recording. I used to spend a lot of time working around the corner on Adam's street. It seemed this concert didn't get much promotion because I remember driving past the fox on Woodward ave an seeing ELP live tonite! That was the first I heard about the show.
@@stratcat4450 perhaps, the quality is not that good, but it's almost impossible to find good live videos of ELPowell. Indeed, I've followed his career for a long time; Schenker, Whitesnake, Blackmore, Moore, among others. And of course with E & L. By the time he sadly passed, he was working with Yngwie Malmsteen
@@user-oe7us3zd9g sorry, my phone is acting up, I have the original vinyl as well as cd's I play these days. I have always been especially fond of ELP Tarcus, an Trilogy I have been a huge fan of Cozy since he played with the late great Jeff Beck.
@@stratcat4450 so lucky you!! Here in Argentina is impossible to find any ELP vinyl or CD now. When I started to listen to ELP, especially Trilogy (my first ELP album, which I discovered through a school friend after I bought the infamous Love Beach, that's the one which introduced ELP to me), we used to swap the records/cassettes with my high school friends. Later on I bought the CDs. Now I have all of them in Spotify.
+Scorpio's Child One of the tricks a great drummer employes is slowing down and speeding up the tempo , and as well moving tempo's in and out of measure . If you prefer your drummers to play like a metronome then fine , but to say Cozy is a better drummer than Palmer is just unbelievable .
David Bonnema just compare touch and go between Powell and Palmer. Different styles but Powell's power suits the 80s version of this band much better. Notice not one timing error between them even when Powell picks up the tempo at the end. This was a great band.
Hmmm... I didn't see the wtf look. a quick glance in that direction. Almost seemed as though Keith was looking at him too. Camera panned too fast. Cozy seemed to be stepping up a notch to see if Greg and Keith could keep up. Carl wouldn't have made that challenge. lol
8:06 You can see Keith is really concentrating to keep steady with the faster tempo as the wall of drums and cymbals are coming are coming at him from cozy. At the MSG show cozy broke his stick during this section and it went flying! He picked up a new one and didn’t drop the beat.
Seems to be a penchant for North American dates/audiences; same thing with 3 except on a smaller scale aiming for clubs, and a broader selection of international dates after they reunited
So Keith sets up a triumphant, magnificent platform for a spectacular crescendo ( 3:39) and then Greg takes the lead and delivers a nothingburger for about two minutes. Eventually, Keith returns to the basic idea and saves the number. The nothingburger would be a great Side B.
Well, perhaps if you had spent time with the band at rehersals you'd be better qualified to correct someone elses comment! But then you are someone who expects a recording to have changed in a year!
