Escanaba and Lake Superior operates in 3 disconnected locations. The main line (Green Bay to Mass City), Marinette/Menominee, and Escanaba/Wells. The railroad's car shop and engine shop are located in Wells and Escanaba. While the railroad does own trackage connecting the 3 together, the connecting branch lines are no longer used regularly and are filled with storage cars. ELS now elects to use CN trackage when locomotives need repair work, or cars need to be moved to the car shop from storage. In a rare move ELS 402 made a run from the main line over to Wells, with 3 cars in tow. One of these cars had been sitting for so long in storage, it had trees growing in it.
