This picture is one of my all-time favorites. It is a portrait of Elsa Peretti shot by Helmut Newton in 1975. I feel that Helmut Newton's work is going to be more actual very soon. And Elsa Peretti is one of the best jewelry designers.
This video is the story of that iconic picture.
Thumbs up if you enjoyed this video!
New videos: Wednesday 4pm & Sunday 12pm (Paris/Berlin time).
Take care!
Justine

I really like the way you comprehend fashion: as intergrating part of other arts, history, politics and share interesting personas stories... I'm astonished about the context behind something what looks as "random" fashion photo! It's a great thing! Kepp it up!! ;)

Looking at her designs, her genius is so apparent, we are fortunate she survived to create such lasting ideas of beauty simplified. Her jewelry is still being copied in one form or another. At bead shops one can find "floating" bead necklaces (diamonds by the yard), the heart, the shiny finished wood and stone rings, the simple, elegant designs revolutionized jewelry designs. Visionary is absolutely the correct word. Thank you for sharing Justine!

The village she lives in is called "Sant Martí Vell"', catalan for "Old Saint Martin" :-) and it is the most beautiful place on Earth. It is located in L' Empordà, Catalonia, a little piece of Paradise in this planet. I know because I used to live there before moving to the US. Elsa is a well known, respected and loved personality, we know about her story and we just adore her. She was the first "non-catalan" personality to be awarded the Catalan National Culture Award. Thank you Justine for your contribution, I also love this picture, Elsa is a Great Damme, and she will always be. ❤️

I was looking for jewels with natural patterns a couple of months ago and I found this line on the Tiffany website in the name of Elsa Peretti. I thought "oh cool! An Italian! Too bad I have no clue who she is...". Now I know and I want those jewels even more!!! Nature and a strong woman (is this association made by chance? 😉): these are my symbols. Thank you Justine!

Nicely done, Justine. It was an exciting time. Helmut Newton's photographs reminded us of our inner strength and power, and still enjoy looking at two books of his that I have. Elsa Peretti was so cool and beautiful, and I wish Halston was still with us, because I could not afford his clothes back then.

What a lovely video. I am delighted to know that Elsa is alive in Barcelona. As a child of the seventies, I adored Studio 54 and Elsa's work for Tiffany's. I own quite a few of her pieces and they are timeless. It's is unfortunate that Mr. Newton is no longer with us. His work pushed the boundaries of polite society which was what the '70s was all about

Hello Justine, I loved this video a lot! I like how you not only gave very well researched background information to an amazing fotograph but also explained how the story maybe affects today's situation and fashion. Could you maybe do something similar about fashion icons like Diane von Fürstenberg, Dior, Vivien Westwood, Dries van Noten... or maybe iconic pieces like the Kelly Bag or Birkin Bag, or Diane's wrap-dress. :)

you are right about the times we live in - and it is not only women with their back on the wall, but the way women are look at is one of the indicators that should alert us about the attitude of our time and the direction society will head towards to, if we are not attentive and consequent and 'loud'

There is always something new to learn which I would have not read or watch online or search myself otherwise. I am tired of reading and watching same kind of content which comes to me in suggestions. Its breath of fresh air to watch your videos so full of content without loud expressions, dramatic camera work and unnecessary music. This was fascinating, Justine! You are correct--context is everything. I had never thought about the cultural context for the shoulder pads and suit coats for women in the 80s. I was a teen then, so the cultural context for the clothing escaped my awareness. The rise of feminism in that milieu gives significance to those fashion statements. I see this now, looking back. This was a very interesting video! I hope you do more of this kind of thing!
