Elton John, Dame Edna, and Billie Jean King. Originally aired 1/14/94
Elton John is a renowned British singer, songwriter, and pianist celebrated for his distinctive voice, flamboyant stage presence, and extensive musical catalog that has made a significant impact on pop music since the 1970s. Born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on March 25, 1947, he adopted his stage name and quickly rose to fame with hits like "Your Song," "Rocket Man," and "Candle in the Wind," showcasing his collaboration with lyricist Bernie Taupin. Known for his elaborate costumes and dynamic performances, John has sold over 300 million records, earning numerous accolades, including multiple Grammy Awards and an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Beyond his musical achievements, he is also a prominent philanthropist, particularly recognized for his work in HIV/AIDS advocacy through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, making him not only a music icon but also a powerful advocate for social change.
Dame Edna Everage is a beloved Australian character created and portrayed by comedian Barry Humphries. Known for her extravagant lavender wigs, oversized glasses, and flashy gowns, Dame Edna is a satirical, flamboyant "housewife" and self-proclaimed "megastar" who offers sharp, humorous commentary on society and celebrity culture. She first appeared in the 1950s and gained international fame through her stage shows, television appearances, and her own talk show, where she interviewed a wide range of guests with her trademark wit and playful irreverence. Dame Edna’s unique blend of comedy, camp, and social commentary has made her an enduring icon in the world of entertainment.
Billie Jean King is a legendary American former professional tennis player and advocate for gender equality in sports. Born on November 22, 1943, she achieved significant success in her athletic career, winning 39 Grand Slam titles, including 12 singles championships, and is best known for her groundbreaking victory in the 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" match against Bobby Riggs, which became a cultural phenomenon. Beyond her achievements on the court, King has been a passionate advocate for women’s rights, co-founding the Women’s Sports Foundation and playing a key role in the establishment of equal prize money for male and female tennis players. Her contributions have had a profound impact on the world of sports and women's rights, making her an enduring symbol of empowerment and resilience.

Do some research - "Dame Edna" is played by a man who was married. The persona is made up to entertain and he also does another who is male like a stereotype of a leering and lecherous drunk, nothing like Edna, the lady. Likewise Robin Williams inThe Birdcage - not gay but plays it very well. Several hundred yrs ago women were always played by men in the theater. The others are homosexual in real life but the comedian playing "Edna" is not. But he is knee-slapping funny!

Dame Edna is in a class of her own. Not only did she commandeer the show from the moment she appeared, at 6:07 she got a good jab at Chevy Chase, who acted like a real asshole when he appeared on her show. The elegance of the insult is elegant, charming and full of venom. "Of course, little Chevy cut quite a few classes...." BRAVA!

Most people aged under thirty don't like this sort of thing because it's either terribly non-PC or not nasty enough for their tastes. All too subtle highbrow comedy like "Frasier" has faded away because it doesn't appeal to everyone. I reckon that's how much humour has changed in the last twenty years. It appears these days that if a comedian isn't shouting something obvious in your face, they're not funny. Perhaps it's just me!

She's truly a gem. Campy, light, delightful. There is an aberration who calls herself Lady C. I thought it was a drag skit. Now I think the inspiration was from Dame Edna. Yet, C is very cunning cutting crass and cruel. Crudely carved out cash from targeting Royal targets, for decades. Somehow I feel the cloak was to use the Same Edna appeal. Resulting in a repellant creature.

The amount of comments that naturally use the pronoun 'she' or 'her' to describe Dame Edna Everage is testament to the brilliance of the late Barry Humphries. To have have successfully created such a convincing character that is in contradiction, so outlandish, so exaggerated that it should be obvious that this is nothing but someone in costume. Yet, that is the genius of Barry Humphries that he was able to find the fine line between just outlandish and exaggerated enough that Dame Edna was conversely, very, very convincing. Billie Jean & Elton are loving this. Dame Edna was and always will be fabulous.

Love how Elton is so in on the gag. Craig Ferguson and Graham Norton are the only two talk show hosts who can have a chance of keeping up with The Dame. Parky is a close third.

@@JPMJPM It might be a good utube journey for you to check out. There are lots of Edna clips on here. He/She dresses up as a woman, but what is funny is that she/he INSUTLS everyone. Part of the joke is that Australia was viewed by England as being a provincial, uncooth, unsophisticated wasteland of suburbia and from there came the Megastar who put the English in their place and poked fun of them. It is a very English/Australia joke.... like the south of America making fun of the big cities. But it goes further.... anyway.... have fun seeing what you can find.

OMG Elton John seems like such a regular person here, you'd think someone so legendary would be so stuck up. Go Elton, hope he's still like this.

Pharoah: Elton is extremely humble, such a delight to know and hear him ... certainly not stuck up - whatever gave you that idea ??

Yes, my dear Possums, she's a legend or shall I better say the most legendary Australian woman!!! When I saw Dame Edna for the first in London, I was thrilled. She's so overwhelming that nobody can resist her. Whenever she appears in Great Britain all her shows are sold out weeks before her arrival. She 's probably the only comedian who's allowed to gossip about the Royals, international movie stars, politicians and other high-standing people, and she plays her role very well!
