One of my favourite Elton John songs. It was inspired by a short story by Ray Bradbury called The Rocketman. Ah...brings back memories. Thanks for the reaction. 👍
I remember as a kid riding in the back of our station wagon as we traveled across country at the time the Apollo rockets were heading into space and to the moon here in the U.S., this song playing on the radio. We marveled at every launch on tv as these huge rockets lifted off and headed for space.
Love you guys! I came across your reaction channel and I am really enjoying it! I love your analysis on the songs! You both are so open hearted and caring!
Generally interpreted as about loneliness--especially the way that the obligations of life separate us from out families--but a lot of space songs in the 1970s seemed to have been about the alienating effects of addiction.
I am glad you mentioned that you did not know if he was literally talking about a “Rocket Man” or if he was using it in a metaphorical sense. That’s the beauty of Music, Poetry, Art, …ect. We all give our own interpretation to the art form. The lady picked it up well, Elton John had a horrific drug/alcohol problem, actually almost killed him. When you take those drugs, you are essentially a rocket man about to head into outaspace. Drug junkies are actually also called rocket men, “I will be high as a kite by then”, She also picked up on the Mars and kids references, and again she picked up when she said, why can’t he just have a normal settled wife with his wife and kids, like most people who have substance abuse issues long for. But to me the genius of Elton John is to hide that in a song about a guy getting ready for a Mars mission. Pure Genius!
I've always took it as a metaphor like a man who is living life just going through the motions. Something like an addiction is keeping him from his family " I'm not the kinda man they think I am at home" he's hiding it he's alone in dealing with it. " Mars is not the kinda place to raise your kids In fact it's cold as hell" he's distant. " Burning out his fuse up here alone" he knows eventually he's gonna crash and burn. Just my opinion 🙏♥️
In the 70's people were very much in the closet. This BEAUTIFUL wonderful song is his way of coming out. He's a rocket man, and a very talented one at that! Get it? 😀
This song came out at the time the Apollo rockets were heading into space on a regular basis, they were in fact about that. I find it odd that people today don't understand that.
