Lyrics
I’ll tell you my secrets
And you'll do the same
I’ll lend you my name as an alias
I’ll take the moonlight falling on your face
And the stars from up above
What if I can’t give you anything but love?
Once hearing confession
Was my profession
Telling me things I don’t need to know
So he opened up that door for you
The kind of thrill we’ll never have
What if I can’t give you anything but love?
Do you love me?
It’s dangerous to answer in the dark
Do you need me? Hold on while I
Negotiate that spark
Anticipate an impulse, tell me what I’m supposed to do
Do you want me? Do you want me?
Like I want you…
When this is over
I’ll go back to my wife
I’m the man that she lives with in that other life
When this is over
I’ll go back to your dreams
But I’m not quite the man that I used to be
I recall the moonlight falling on your face
You are all that I adore
What if I can’t give you anything more?
Don’t you need me, Baby?
Not one little bit?
Don’t fix me with that deadly gaze
It’s a little close to pity
This time is overdue, tell me what I’m supposed to do
Do you want me? Do you want me?
Like I want you…
Your eyes wouldn’t meet me
As we passed on the stairs
The night’s not all it’s cracked up to be
I recall the moonlight falling on your face
And the stars from up above
What if I can’t give you anything but love?
I recall the moonlight falling on your face
The stars from up above
What if I can’t give you
What if I can’t give you
What if I can’t give you anything but love?

This is off the scale. Since 1978 I've regarded him as the greatest songwriter of the 20th/21st century. But this? 45 years of songwriting, 45 years of playing with Steve and Pete...everything just suddenly clicks into place. How do you make the best record you ever made at 67? This honestly might be it.

"How do you make the best album of your life at 67?" Well for starters, survive yourself til 67... Bobby womack is another artist that made music continuously into his old age and only got better. Some artists embrace growth more than others, I guess. I think a lot of it is who you come up with as an artist. Both womack and costello for example were well regarded in their heydays, but both were also overshadowed at the time by peers who burned a little brighter, and also burnt out sooner.

I am playing it now to brand in my brain permanently. So delighted with this song,. Last album before this one is also great, it doesn't have this song on it. It may be the keycard to scoring a hit, like in the 70ies and 80ies.... Play it one more time, play it all night long.

Classic Pete, that drumfill intro. Fingerlicking start to a song that you wish would become a hit. Tastefully yet sobrily arranged, spaceously produced, with a nice guitartwang to it. And a song to sing along with. Thanks for sharing this with us, Elvis.

Reminds me of Billy Paul's "Me and Mrs. Jones." I had to look up who sang it, but buddy, that was a good one, M&MJ.

I'm curious. What song of yours would you WANT Frank Sinatra to do. I'm a channeler. Pete Shotton confirmed that I really do channel his boyhood mate. That made my crazy become professional. I'm Jesus Oldman now. I am on Sound Click. Search out "Even So"... that is one that Frank wrote, and I gotta tell you, it's amazing. I'd like to see you cover, that. He's looking through my limited knowledge of your work, thinks Town Crier might be good for it.

"Almost Blue" is the song that Elvis has said he wanted Frank Sinatra to sing. Elvis is a channeler too, btw. He may not admit it, but he is.

PS. If you ever played with the Attractions again, I'd love to make a proper album with you lot. We'd get Nick to produce if he's up for it. Well I play guitar too... and keyboard... and percussion... beyond that I'm bored and non committal. Time'll do that.
