He was 37 then...5 yrs before he died.... he'd be 84 now....he had alot of medical issues and he was on alot of prescription medicine....he had terrible insomnia... glaucoma...etc....but he gave 100% when he went on that stage....I think he was sweating from stage lights, an active stage show and a heavy warm stage suit....a double of months later, after this tour he was breaking attendance records at Madison Square garden and he was tanned and looked like a God and then of course the following year he did the iconic Hawaii concert...again looking sensational...i do think with Elvis he cud look bloated more one day than another due to medication or how he was feeling...but he is still and will always remain the blueprint for everyone that has come after him...the good and the bad and there are no singers today who are as versatile as Elvis was....a real singer who didn't need auto tune and who sang from the boots upwards....thx Elvis for everything

Elvis had more vocal change than any other, they say he had eight vocal changes he could do, this is unheard of. If this was the case then he truly was the greatest music talent out there Barr none!

They said that the one thing that NEVER failed with Elvis was his voice and that is such a true statement. Plus, he loved his fans. You can't fake that...wish I was old enough to see him in concert. RIP.....sir

I really respect your thoughtful commentary. Elvis was only 37 years old at this time... and would be gone within 5 years. Quite tragic really. Elton John said in interview couple years ago people forget how young Elvis was when he passed away and how extra sad it was because the world lost so much future artistry and creative endeavours from him, that he never got to do. James Brown also said same thing about Elvis. And very true what you say about people can be quite mean or harsh. And considering the same pill addiction that Elvis was battling is *still* today in 2019 one of the most common addictions affecting tens of millions of people, we realize how really *a bit ridiculous and over-the-top some of the ridicule directed Elvis for his addiction* is. And even after saying all that I have always been impressed with his humanity....his generosity, compassion and empathy for others he was always known for. The fact that 4 years after this, his very last year, when his health started plummeting there are some incredibly moving stories about Elvis doing things to help others that have largely been unknown. He was donating money to countless Charities and organizations (which he had always done) but when people around him told him he really needed to take a well-deserved break and rest instead of thinking of himself he was thinking about others... "I have over a hundred people and their families whose livelihoods and very survival rely on me continually getting on stage making money. If I quit performing, where will they go, what will they do?" Just weeks before he passed away he saw a young man on the side of the road in Wisconsin getting beat up by two other young men. The law enforcement and Security in his car told Elvis not to stop and "don't get involved". Witnesses in the car said Elvis said "I don't go for this two-on-one s**t!" and he jumped out of the car, ran over getting in a fighting stance announcing he was there to even up the odds. After the initial shock of them turning around and seeing Elvis standing there in the flesh ready to mix it up with them if they didn't step away from the young man on the losing end of that fight on the ground, Elvis then got to talking with the three of them to get to the bottom of what the fight was about. Then he said "Are we good here now?".. and had the three of them shake hands. As crowds started to gather to shake Elvis hand and ask for autographs, he obliged a few from the crowd, then walking away to get back in his car he announced "I met you as enemies, I leave you as friends" This event always stuck with me because again it was about only 5 to 6 weeks before he passed away. At the worst point of his entire life when he was dealing with his own depression and severe health issues, he still had incredible Humanity helping a complete stranger in a situation that a lot of other people driving by did not care about. Elvis really was a beautiful soul and special cat.

Elvis was 37 years old here. "Love me Tender" 1970 Las Vegas. You will see how much he loved his fans, and how much we loved him. Documentaries: There is only ONE Elvis, and Elvis A Generious Heart! My 2 favorites. All his backup singers were christian groups. There is a new movie trailer out about Elvis the movie comes out 06/24/22. Tom Hanks stars as his manager. It's going to be the best ever about Elvis.

Excellent commentary Frank and I enjoy the way you catch all of the various things Elvis put together in the show, and the arrangements of the songs, etc., to make them first class. Such as JD Sumner coming in with the nice bass note to close things, out, etc., and Elvis also insisting on having an orchestra as well as a first class rhythm section. John Lennon said that 'Elvis died when he went in the army," but I totally love this Elvis and these great songs and interpretations. You're correct, too, as Elvis is actually rather thin here. And when one looks back and sees the young Elvis who helped kick off rock n roll with "That's alright" and "Heartbreak Hotel," etc., and someone called the "Hillbilly Cat" it's amazing to see how that same person became this powerful master crooner even singing semi-operatic songs at the end. As to the bass singer, JD Sumner, he was in the Guinness Book of World Records, at one time, for hitting the lowest note recorded.

disagree, the 1972 version is the best - his voice was deep as the blue of the ocean and ripened like a thunderstorm, look at the moment when elvis breaks his voice in an amazing way, which he never before could do with the word "water" 3min40sec - he looked to the girl with the choir sweet inpiration who screamed out loud YEAAAH !!! @@Blackeyedangel-fe5ch First, you're dead wrong. Second, I've studied this subject longer than you've been alive. I'm an expert on the life, music and influence of elvis presley. His August 11, 1970 interpretation of "bridge over troubled water" is Light years better than 72. And it's crystal clear to anyone who understands the soul depth and diversity of elvis presley. In 1970, he really shades the song with delicacy and then tremendous power. It's a great example of "singing 101" And I like the 72 versions. However, it's very very clear that the 70 version on that particular night, WAS the gold standard, the benchmark. Sorry to tear you down on this subject. But you're way out of your league here.

You're the first "reactor" to explain the truth of his situation: 1. He was still young when he died, 2. That wasn't "fat," that was a side effect of the drugs that he thought he could control, and 3. He still had time to get well again in 1972, and thus his death was a terrible and unnecessary tragedy. The Fray made a song about it: "How To Save A Life." The point of that song is that nobody knows how. Today, he could have been a senior celebrity enjoying Twitter as so many of them do. (William Shatner is 88! And tougher than ever.) Most of the reactors are *very* young, so it's hard to grasp when you're 22 or some such age. Thank you. You got a new subscriber.

First of all, that was a very interesting and intelligent reaction. I loved your perspectives! And if the truth be known, Elvis wasn't even photogenic! Prior to the first time I saw him (I eventually saw over 100 shows in Las Vegas and even went to his after the show parties for 5 years), I thought I'd probably be disappointed, but it was the opposite. He was so strikingly beautiful (in the most manly sense), and add to that he was charismatic, had the most riveting personality of anyone I've ever encountered, was full of fun, mischief and was even philosophical and inquisitive about people, wanting to hear every detail of their lives....surely he left this world too soon. And during most of those Las Vegas years he was slim and healthy looking. It was only the last 18 months that his decline became painfully obvious. He stopped coming to the get-togethers after the show and became reclusive. But prior to that we would stay up til sunrise with a few people around the piano and him singing. All you had to do was compliment him on a particular song and he'd call someone to play the piano, then stand face to face singing it to you. He did that to me with "Softly, as I Leave You." (a great one to hear and react to, although it was never filmed) And I had to stand there at the age of 17, acting normal, when I really wanted to faint! Sorry for the long comment... Well done on the reaction!

Although I love seeing him perform it live, my personal favorite is the version he released as a single around 1970. Not the MGM Hotel live version but a studio recording. They dubbed in applause at the end to give it the appearance of a live performance. It’s much clearer and the last 45 seconds of it is stunning. You can hear Kathy Westmoreland hit an incredible high note that blends perfectly. Take a listen for yourself and I think you’ll agree. Thanks for sharing these and always appreciate seeing new fans’ reactions.

I got to see his 1973 Hawaii concert 3rd row center So i could see his beautiful blue eyes. The drugs started in the Army. They gave the men uppers n downers So after 2 years in Army came home with drug problems. He had many HEALTH PROBLEMS glaucoma which is painful, hypertensión, enlarged heart, crónicas back pain , but the disease that ended his Life most feel was the Mega Colón that several times TWISTED N CAUSED SEVERE PAIN n PUTS strain on his heart/ heart attack. I m an RN n i have 3 Friends Who are doctors n also say the Colón could have ended his Life. The drug abuse to help with the pain he was having. I m not saying drugs are ok but with all his Colón problems i could see him needing relief. The Weight gain could have been from steroids that he was getting for his back pain. He was not in good health at the ene of his Life. He was asked If he would want to shorten his last concert because he was very Short of breath . Well Elvis said "No the show must go on for my Fans" i also have done alot of research on Elvis since 1956 So i may know some facts about his Life. I m not trying to know everything about him but i did meet Charlie Hodge just before he died in 2009 n he did tell me several things about Elvis Charlie was his side Kick singing harmony, giving scarfs n wáter to him during concert. I think he worked himself to death. He played two shows a night. Each show anywhere from twenty to twenty-five songs! For two weeks straight!!! The drugs helped him keep a super human schedule. He would get an injection of amphetamines just before going on stage. Later after the show they would “bring him down” to sleep. He was just SO in demand that sometimes he even did a third show all in one day!!! I don’t judge him too much for that. I just KNOW when I watch him I’m seeing something glorious and extraordinary.

One more comment. Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston's mother, was one of his back-up singers.

I lived in Memphis and went to Graceland. ELVIS was the best singer on Earth, his range. There is a better version on the Internet. When Elvis was in his white jump suit with rhinestones. It was more powerful than this one. Also in June 1977 he played piano and sang Unchained Melody, his favorite song. Fabulous. Both songs. Depth, feeling.

Elvis had his mother's round face, any extra pounds made him look fatter. But he was in good shape until 74/75, although he gained some weight in 72 but quickly regained his shape for the Hawaii concert. We must not forget that he was approaching 40 and began to lose his youthfulness and lose his glow. But he was the greatest of all time, no doubt

The dude with the mustache is indeed J.D. Sumner, fro J.D sumner and the Stamps. Elvis knew J.D. ever he was a kid and would sneak back stage when JD and his choir were playing a show nearby. Later they became his backing vocals. On tour Elvis and them sang gospel through the night. Check this out: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9Ae5pjIK8lM.html

I always felt Elvis looked in great shape in 1972. Some of the Elvis on tour footage he looks really pale, but I've put that down to odd lighting and also perhaps a poor make up job for the cinema cameras. Overall he still looked great, and more importantly was still actively involved in the concerts. That said 1972 was really his last year of full physical and mental health. From 1973 onwards things really started falling apart with his health and his mental health. He pulled himself together physically for the Aloha from Hawaii concert in 1973, but after that it was always down hill. The one thing that never failed him is the one thing I wish had. His voice just kept getting stronger and stronger. I wish it had gone. I know that sounds counter initiative, but his voice faltering is the one thing that would have shocked Elvis into cleaning himself up properly, and dealing with his issues. The voice would have come back and he'd still be with us!
