You've got to understand singers did not do this on tv back in the 1950s. Elvis got a lot of bad press after this performance. It seems tame now but Elvis caught hell over it.
It is endless dividing. Someone appears, then someone decides to add on it and so on. Kiss were OTT back in the day, 80's glam bands went further, no show backslash from grunge. Trash metal was hard and now there are extremely hard black metal groups.
When Elvis first appeared on the Ed Sullivan show, they blacked out the screen from the waist down because some people considered his dancing to be obscene.
And now 12 year old kids watch pornos on their cell phones people predicted he would go nowhere the biggest nothing they said it's always the generation before or the one before that that put down anything though it's still going on I remember James Brown I used to listen to him and a guy I was working with said you turn that off or I'll have you fired I was young I can't believe that guy I'm pretty sure he's dead now he was old in 1970 James Brown wasn't played on white stations he had been around for a while when I first heard him and he crossed over became big as hell I used to listen to a station out of Harlem WWRl they broadcasted from a hotel uptown a lot of music was censored but once that gate was knocked down everything came pouring through and you heard folk music rock and roll country Blues pop all on same station that's when things really changed but that has changed now they have stations 4 different music I liked it better the way it used to be

I’m one of the biggest Elvis fans on the planet and watch tons of reaction videos, i rarely hear people comment on his singing ability. His voice had everything and more. His ability to interpret a song with his voice and charisma is second to none! Elvis had the most creative, unique, transcendent voice in history. The voice alone is otherworldly. Nobody changed the global landscape of a culture the way Elvis did. He influenced not only music, but influenced society because of how genuine and respectful he was of ALL people! The man was a true American original. It’s hard to even compare any other artists to Elvis Presley because you can’t.
I watched this on TV that night with my family and fell in love with rock'n'roll - most likely a Saturday or Sunday night. Mom was complaining about his awful sideburns. I was in kindergarten at the time. Every Monday morning in school we had to sign a song using a fake cardboard mic. I started singing this and the teacher angrily stopped me and told me to sit down. Even had the hip thing going as best a 5 yo could ;-)
There are countless amazing performances by Elvis, one that always blows my mind is "My Way 1977" one of his last songs on stage. He was ill and he was forgetting his lyrics, he started the song by saying "i don't know the words to it so i have to read it if you don't mind" and then proceeded to give us one the best live performances ever.

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller wrote "Hound Dog"; Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton recorded it in 1952. Rufus Thomas wrote and recorded "Bear Cat" in 1953 in response to "Hound Dog". Elvis recorded "Hound Dog" in 1956 - it dominated popular music that year and beyond.
She never gets credited but Big Mama Thornton co-write Hound Dog. -- Elvis recorded it but never paid royalties, which was a common thing back in those days for white guys to steal black artists music and not pay for it. Same with Pat Boone recording Little Richard's Tutti Frutti. Or the many people that have recorded Screamin' Jay Hawkins song I Put A Spell On You, the only person that ever gave him credit, and the only cover that Screamin' Jay ever liked, was Nina Simone when she recorded it in 1965
@@DFDuck55 Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller maintained ownership of "Hound Dog" even though Johnny Otis was a co-writer of the song. Performers - Thornton, Presley, others - earned something from their record sales, but the people who held the publishing rights earned even more. Some songwriters gave up their publishing rights for the temptation of upfront money...
According to Big Mama Thornton she co-wrote the lyrics but never got credited for it. But she got mad when anyone sang "her" songs and made more money off the song than she did, and with her you were never quite sure if it wasn't just the alcohol talking. She never did get over Janis Joplin singing Ball & Chain, though she did give her props for even trying to sing one of her songs. Big Mama write some good songs, and a lot of people sang them, but she died penniless of alcohol abuse.
The rumour that Presley never paid royalties to black songwriters/artists is pure myth. Otis Blackwell, Claude Demetrius, Ivory Joe Turner, Thomas A. Dorsey & several other black songwriters made a lot of money from his success and cover versions. Presley's version of "Hound Dog" was inspired by the Freddie Bell cover version of the song (Presley recorded the song without hearing Big Mama Thornton's version).

@Big Bill O'Reilly They ALL took drugs...Elvis, MJ, Jimi Hendrix and all of those Rock groups. I heard a bunch of Country singers did, also. A bunch of them died from drugs. Elvis didn't do "street" drugs, but the prescription pills ended up doing him in.

I should have said that Most did , or do drugs. That's what I've read, anyway and they usually admit it themselves. God will judge Elvis...what everyone else thinks doesn't matter.
Nobody at the time ever saw this type of "Rock and Roll" music and dance performance before. A very "young kid" put his soul and "cultural" background into his stage performance and forever changed the world. His vocal talent and somewhat hypnotic vocal and dance moves were not only radically different from the mainstream but began set about changing and opening up young kids minds on a global scale. Certainly, the UK bands that followed in the mid-60s and beyond can be partly attributed to Elvis.

Elvis was a little before my time, however, my Mom loved him, and listened to him all the time, so I definitely appreciate his music, and think he was a, one of a kind, performer and the King of Rock for the times......And yes, Michael may have got some of his dance move ideas from Elvis, although, it doesn't take away, from what Michael did with those moves, and how he added his own style and charisma to his performances!!!

This one and when the Beatles first showed up on TV with the long hair. Then the guys wanted to grow their hair long too and a major clash with their dad's. I remember this well. The style for boys at the time was a bur or crew cut. The men thought the Beatles were being feminine with their long hair, and no son of theirs was about to go around "lookin' like a girl". (and they didn't like their daughters dating a boy with long hair either) The men considered the Beatles, sissy boys.. lol However, the teenagers considered them cool and awesome. lol

Watch the Tupelo 56 video for raw video of the man himself. As for the vid, remember this was when stuff like Doris Day and Pat Boone were on, and here comes this guy and actually brings flavor to show business. Style, presence,charisma, cool.. He had it in spades.
Let's try and put things in perspective. Elvis performed live her with only 3 instruments. At the time, it was new, raw and powerful. No one had ever previously moved or sang like him on national TV. There are videos of Elvis gliding on one foot moving sideways. His movements as well as his voice were new and different. His voice was versatile. How many Rock or Rhythm and Blues singers had the balads he had or won grammys for Gospel music like did? But most importantly, he knew had to have fun with his audience, as he clearly did in this video.
What’s interesting about Elvis’s version, is that It doesn’t groove at all like the original. It’s a NEW American feel. Plus, the overall sound of the record: The three-part harmony of the Jordanaires, their Latin rhythm hand claps, the guitar sound (and insanely cool solo) and snare sound. And of course, Elvis’s superb vocals. All produced by the legend himself...
This performance led to a MASSIVE outcry leading to the police filming his live shows and TV shows only filming him from the waste UP! If you listen to the audience reaction during the second half of the song you can hear that they're shocked at what they're seeing. The one true king.
In his early days he was considered "OBSCENE" by the media and parents, so they would cut to close ups of him or cut him off at the waist so his moves wouldn't be televised. Crazy Huh!

My grandma told me about this, when Elvis preformed this on the Ed Sullivan show the TV screen went black because at the time his dancing was considered obscene. He was then only ever filmed from the waist up when he preformed on those types of shows, and was called Elvis with the pelvis.

The great Ed Sullivan Show. Fun thing Ty is the back up group had no clue he was going to sing it again and slow. Elvis always did that and put the band on their toes. If you watch it again and look at the guy with the guitar look at the drummer. Elvis always had fun doing those things lol. You also forgot to add my video lol
Please bear in mind that not everybody had a tv set both in America and Internationally (no repeats either) so just hearing his voice and singing on the radio without seeing his face or body had an effect on people worldwide. The fact that he looked like a god was a bonus.

Hey, Thing you have to understand about Elvis is that he was raised in and around the black communities in Tennessee/Mississippi and regularly attended their prayer meetings and church services. It was at these places he developed an ear for music and a coordination for his hip/leg gyrations. This learning all came about through listening to and watching the black preachers and the church congregations... and also being invited to learn by his own participation. Also, during his formative years, black blues music was a strong force in his societal musical education... he listened to the blues all the time. Now, this takes us to the likes of “Hound Dog”. This was a blues song and, just as he did with many others, Elvis sped it up and added a more solid rhythm and beat. This was the birth transition of the blues into rock’n’roll. The lyric of Hound Dog, for example, was not to be taken literally. It was *not* about a dog. Generally, these early blues songs were metaphoric and they alluded to hidden (and many times blatant) sexual meanings and undertones. This can be recognised in many early blues songs that Elvis covered, although not as much in Hound Dog and Elvis’s first big hit “That’s Alright Mama” (this latter one previously having been a big hit for Arthur ‘Big Boy’ Crudup in - I think - the 1940s or earlier). If you listen to the songs of some of the early black blues singers, you’ll get the picture. Keep up the good work, and God bless.

Those dance moves were considered shocking at the time, but yeah, many artists copied his moves and his expressions, but nobody could top his performances, he had the charisma and a wonderful sense of humor.
Hound Dog was originally done by Big Mama Thorton. Elvis changed the lyrics to some extent with his version probably in deference to his manager Tom Parker. Elvis' version was one of the biggest hits ever when I was a teenager. I hadn't heard Big Mama's version until the late 70's. But it also is well worth listening to.
The thing really cool about this video is that they had never slowed down the tempo, that was Elvis spur of the moment and the band had to react to it.
A lot people miss Elvis' sense of humor. He realized just as much as anyone else did (including his critics) what a silly song it was, and reveled in it. Much of what he did was tongue in cheek with a strong sense of fun. He would even goof around during a serious song like "Love Me Tender" ("...my latest RCA record escape--uh, release") which he obviously got tired of singing over and over since it was such a big movie-related hit. All of his performances on The Ed Sullivan Show when he was in his prime are worth seeking out.

Everybody, keep another thing in mind. For people who were over 10 years of age at the time. If you didn't know who Elvis was up to this performance, you almost certainly knew who he was after this performance. He almost got banned from television because of this performance.
I think Elvis was probably the guy that inspired the Beatles. in fact John Lennon at one time said without Elvis there would be nothing. he changed his tune later on in life nobody steals music it belongs to the public. if you want to sing someone else's song you do a cover. been going on since Thomas Edison. but there are certain copyright Laws. that's why you have lawyers. there isn't an artist in any type of music that hasn't covered a song. I just listen don't care where it came from if I like it I like it. people get nuts about nothing. I listen to real rhythm and blues. and also covers of different songs. Like I always say it's all good.
@@gordongo7919 before Elvis most white artists stood in front of the microphone move the little but Elvis used to go to black churches to watch them on Sundays and he fell in love with the way they moved in saying that's where Elvis got inspired he loved the Black Performance was it good kid but when you get big things go bad and that's what happened got involved with the wrong people they brought him drugs all kinds of crazy stuff but the young Elvis was a good country boy who loved his mama the colonel turns him into Godzilla on drugs call Parker wasn't even a colonel people used to call him the Dutchman I think it was from the Netherlands not even a citizen but he made Elvis a rich man and had him make all those movies I've seen a few of them on television I saw one called Kid Galahad Elvis played a guy who just got out of the army and was a boxer and a gentleman and Ann-Margret was the love interest that movie is well over 50 years old I kind of enjoyed it
YES, the name Beatles WAS a play on the Crickets, its a fact and all the Beatles agree on that fact, however, ELVIS was the one that made them want to play Rock & Roll, he was their biggest influence, all the Beatles have agreed to that fact in many different interviews, radio and TV ... We had the record when I was a kid. We loved "Hound Dog" and played it all the time. My dad hated it and "accidentally" put his elbow on it and smashed it. So much for Elvis in our house! :)
My mom had a clash in her own house. My mom, her older sister and their dad *loved* this, while their mom about blew a gasket. Grandma hated Elvis for years afterwards. Mom still loves Elvis.
The great thing to about Elvis is, he never did the same style of singing or Dancing . Every time you see another one of his videos it's like a different guy.
Appears that this version will be from the Milton Berle Show. This is what lead Ed Sullivan in wanting Elvis filmed from the waist up when he next visited his show. Elvis took a LOT of heat from this.
@AmishElvis1 from Scotty Moores recollection the Milton Berle people off cam were telling them to slow down, and thats just what they did in the second half of the song you can see Elvis laugh as they slowed down, they thought to slow it down Elvis couldn't make those body moves. but it Backfired. lmao i Dig ur comments though. Also unusual at that time was Scotty Moore's Echosonic amp which allowed him to play live with tape delay/echo effects. Not many were built and they were very expensive. Also dig DJ Fontana's unshaven calfskin bass drum head on his Gretsch set. Bill Black always made me laugh at his reactions while playing bass. You can tell they are all having ball.
RCA tried to rearrange Elvis's music in the recording studio with excessive echo effects, etc. and it created tension because, Elvis would have none of it. Elvis maintained total control of his recordings by contract. This was a R&B song with different words notably by Big Mama Thornton. Elvis wrote this version as a slam against RCA. The RCA logo is a dog listening to the horn of a Gramaphone and that's the hound dog that the song refers to.
My favorite Elvis song! I am not sure, but the bass player may be Bill Black. He put out some cool tunes before I was born. My parents had "return to sender" on a 45 RPM Record by Elvis. I enjoyed that first. Then I heard Hound Dog later. It was my new favorite. And still is.
I think this was a cornerstone in his career in the 50's he recorded plenty of pop records for RCA But Hound Dog was what made Elvis stand out.. 1956. His breakout year. The song was originally done a few years before. A raw blues record by the great big momma thorton. Elvis's version was up tempo and he had fun with it but it showed his roots
Ah... one of a few Elvis songs I have sung for karaoke. I always toss some more modern grit onto my voice when I do it though. The other Elvis song I sang was I Can't Help Falling In Love.
