Elvis Presley: "I Just Can't Help Believin'" (RARE 1976 Live Version)

Recorded on 12.2.1976 at the Las Vegas Hilton during Opening Night of Elvis' final Vegas engagement.
This is an ultra-rare version of the song, as Elvis rarely sang this after 1970. This likely was the first (and last time) Elvis sang it live after the early '70s. It's an audience recording so the quality isn't great, and since Elvis and the band went years without doing it, there are some mistakes made by them, but the audience still loves it! Great to hear this little gem of Elvis concert history.

Elvis will always be the greatest entertainer of all time and the one and only king of music. I am 50 years old and an Elvis fan since the early 1970's. Elvis was and still is and always will be the undisputed king of entertainment. Elvis's voice and charisma and stage presence will never be equalled by anyone else. There is only one Elvis.

Forever my memories will be with the "KING". My grandfather worked at RCA and was able to see Elvis a couple of times. He would tell me stories. Today is my Grandpa's birthday RIP Grandpa

considering this is a rare, unrehearsed treat only nine months before his death, this is a terrific version and Elvis sounds fine. Love his emphasis on `help'

Nice to hear that Elvis remembered most of this complex arrangement. Notice he places more emphasis on the word "help" than in the earlier versions. He does forget when the band comes in, but excuses himself, and continues. A rare find indeed. Thank heavens for the Elvis tapers. Just imagine how much history was lost because of those that didn't, but be grateful for the treasures like this one. - JG

I wouldn't say it got weaker, rather it changed. It grew deeper and had a more operatic flavour to it. Elvis' lost his gruffness, but never his voice.

Glad to hear this Dec '76 version. The released 1970 live recording is one of the best ever of the seventies. It was so good that it's probably the reason there was never an official studio recording. And it's one of the many songs I wish Elvis had performed regularly on stage.

So much of '76 is hard to listen to, especially summer. He just had no energy in the voice (he could still sing, though!). There was a brief resurgence in the fall of '76 where he came around, but it didn't last long.

This is quite a good performance for the time period. Not sure what prompted to suddenly revive this one, but he sounds quite good.

thanks for posting this rare performance. its a fav of mine and i always like to hear variations, its true he didnt sing it much in concert which is a shame but nearly every time he sings it including the "thats the way it is" performance he fluffs it... so maybe that put him off.

Elvis sounds fine. Even changing up the vocal pattern, a bit, to breathe new life into the song..His attempts are appreciated by me.. even if the band and Elvis are not always in sync, because this was a casual unrehearsed try at the song.. on stage in Vegas in 1976. This is a audience recording, so its not of best quality, and maybe thats why it doesn't sound as good as the versions of the song, he recorded 6 years earlier. But it is good, he is singing well !

Very likely. I'm 99.9% sure myself this is the last one, especially since many setlists in the following 6 months didn't change too much. If it was done again, it slipped any other audience recordings.

I'd like to hear this song at the proper speed. It was recorded with a handheld tape recorder in the audience, and the speed is slower than the actual delivery. You can hear how sluggish everything sounds, and how the claps at the end sound like grapes shot at a tin door.

How sad. His management team worked him too hard, for too long. In the end it was only drugs that kept him standing. A lesson to learn for all future stars.
