"Down in Tupelo I used to hear old Arthur Crudup bang his box the way I do now, and I said 'If I ever got to the place where I could feel all old Arthur felt, I'd be a music man like nobody ever saw.' " ELVIS PRESLEY - 1956
Recorded by Elvis on Monday, 30 January 1956;
Elvis Presley: Vocals, Acoustic Guitar; Scotty Moore: Electric Guitar; Bill Black: Upright Bass; DJ Fontana: Drums;
Arthur Crudup was born in 1905. He did not learn to play guitar until he was 32. His records enjoyed considerable success in the Southern states of the USA during the 1940s and early 1950s, but he disappeared from the recording scene in 1954. He enjoyed a career revival with the renewed interest in Blues music in the mid 1960s. Arthur Crudup died in 1974. Trying to point to an "original" version of an Arthur Crudup number is not as easy as it might seem. Old Arthur was able to do a lot with very little material and he seemed to have a basic set of three lyrics and the same number of tunes, which were mixed up in various concoctions, given another title and, hey presto, another song was born. Based, purely on title, Arthur recorded his original of "My Baby Left Me" in 1949, but listen to his "I Want My Lovin'" (date unknown) or "I Don't Know It" (1946) and the significance of "original" takes a nosedive: both songs could serve as the original of "My Baby Left Me" or even "That's All Right Mama." See also So Glad You're Mine and That's All Right Mama.

I was very fortunate to be a teenager in the 50s, you can’t imagine the feeling when this music was played I still get it now, what happy days they were there wasn’t only Elvis , Bill Haley who really made rock n roll popular, he might not have been the 1st but he made it popular, also Jerry Lee, Little Richard, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, but Elvis was special, oh happy days !!!

I was born on the second last day of the 1950s, but I grew up with brothers who were older, and I got to listen to their music and it became my music. I remember when I was 13, and someone had a copy of Elvis' second album. I heard "Rip it up", and said "Who is this guy?" I grew up when Elvis was making his comeback. His early stuff was very dynamic.

In 1956 I was thirteen and had spent the money I earned that summer on a Webcor record player. On a Saturday that year I accompanied my mother who was buying sheet music in a record shop and saw hanging on the wall behind the register the album jacket for the Elvis album "For LP Fans Only". The cover listed the songs which included Mystery Train, Lawdy Miss Clawdy, That's All Right, and My Baby Left Me. I nearly fell over. Out of money, I pestered my mother who finally relented and bought the album. I played it to death and still have a vinyl copy.

And your age has nothing to do with it, I couldn't care less what age you are, its obvious that the lyrics are not the same why you brought that up is anyones guess? The melody is nothing like "That's Alright", "That's Alright" starts with a rhythmic acoustic guitar, "My Baby Left Me", starts with a driving snare drumb from DJ Fontana which runs into Bill Black on the stand up base and then scotty Moore on electric guitar it's a completely different setup not to mention there are four players on "My baby left me" vs three on "That's Alright". Amazing what GOD can bless an individual with, when GOD sees ones struggles due to the hardships of the world. A gift from GOD in many ways is like the LORD saying I see your hardships, and this is my gift to you, to make the hardships go away. BEAUTIFUL. This is my own opinion, for I am not worthy to speak of his majesty, and what he the thinks, or decress upon anyone of this world. Keep in mind that Elvis was very poor, his gift would be his salvation to a better life, that would propel him above the many hardships that he and his family endured when he was just a baby.

Joel Mc Hey Joel Mc. Got a derned notification that you had posted. I think that is not an accurate statement. Off top of my head, I don't recall name of man who signed contracts with Arthur Crudup and -- apparently -- retained most of the royalties. But, it wasn't the Colonel... or at least, I am not aware of any claims that the Colonel did not pay royalties for the Crudup songs Elvis covered. But that is kinda far from the point. I questioned the value of 'being known.' In particular, I question the value of fame when the value of your life's work has been stolen.

"Elvis Presley - My Baby Left Me (RCA Studios New York 1956)". I always thought this was a Sun recording.

"Down in Tupelo I used to hear old Arthur Crudup bang his box the way I do now, and I said 'If I ever got to the place where I could feel all old Arthur felt, I'd be a music man like nobody ever saw.' " ELVIS PRESLEY - 1956 I see this "quote" all over the internet... it cannot be seriously doubted that Elvis grew up with access to and influence of gospel, blues, r&b -- whatever politically correct thing we wanna call negro music now. Do you have an original source for the quote?

b a buddha I believe it was either JET magazine, or Sepia. Both were black publications at the time, I think.
