Still the best version is in Elvis Now (1972). I do believe that take is extraordinary, powerful and magnificent. Definitely one of my favourite Elvis's songs in his whole discography. I can't really describe how generous he was with his voice and singing: great, great singer. The best. Unforgettable.
This is a perfect example of peerless sonic perfection. Without backing singers, Elvis is conceptually moving this song into alignment with his vision. He did the same with Bridge Over Trouble Water, along with all of his spirited output. His vocal prowess- both in scale and spirit- is King!
It's just class. Bought the CD set but not opened them as played it thro you tube... but Elvis's voice is so beautiful when he sings a song... these are just pure great.... brilliant songs.... the King will go on forever.
Elvis Presley was a very special gift from God. He was here for a little while to spread his brand of magic and joy and in a flash he was gone. But his voice lives on, legends never die. ♥️

I can make the morning listening to this song. Fantastic, thank you for posting. Wish the recording engineer had not faded out the song at 3.55 and had recorded for 3 more minutes. EP would have enjoyed it for sure, you can sense it.

I love Elvis, like all of you, but I just have to tell you THE TRUTH, (now you will hate me for it, but that´s just not MY problem)...... :Elvis were perhaps a great singer and a great human being....but.. he didn´t write his own lyrics!!
Neither did a lot of singers. He's credited on about ten songs as writer, and only two of those can he honestly stake a claim to. Nobody denies he wasn't an accomplished songwriter, but what can't be denied is his vocal talent and afterall that is the main thing that matters with a singer. Songs can be written by plenty of people, but only a select few have the vocal range to perform them with such power and capability. Elvis was and still is one of the most talented male vocalists of all time, and the number of songs that he wrote does not for one second change his talent as a vocalist.
