After seeing the movie this afternoon, that was a spot on review. Austin Butler is definitely going to be in the running for an Oscar for this. A star is born.

I still cannot believe they gave it to Brendan Fraser no disrespect to him but I did not watch the Whale nor do I have any interest to no shade but it looks all he did in that movie was sit down be fat and cry lol Austin worked his ass off and actually sang and danced in the movie he did not lip sync but Austin will win a Oscar that kid is a star

Austim blew my mind. he interpreted and chanelled Elvis. Demeanor off stage was spot on too. No tribute imitator could touch Austin.. That said, the editing and the music scenes made me feel like I was watching the real thing again. In the 45 years since Elvis is gone, nothing anyone has done comes close to this.. Should do about 500 million by August if you consider global sales, DVD's and HBO will push it past that number..

I saw it last night at the Early Access Fan Event. The audience, I think not all Elvis fans, reacted the best, laughed, cheered at one moment, I think when Elvis defied the Colonel, and clapped at the end. It showed the full clip of Austin Butler performing "That's All Right", he broke his guitar pick playing it. I think when you see him performing in the pink suit and slowly the girls are just compelled to stand up and scream, I went yeah, this guy has Elvis charisma. The QR code on screen linked to NME magazine which explained that the colonel was a Dutch "illegal alien" which is why he couldn't go outside US. I think the only missing thing was making Blue Hawaii, it was influential for him, the Jungle Room, almost the first thing you see at Graceland, went there in 2006. The restaurant I worked at in Disneyland, Tahitian Terrace, played two songs from it. I think the movie is the best exposure to anyone answering who is Elvis and why is he important.

I saw The " Elvis " movie yesterday. It was Great. I will watch it again. I saw Elvis Presley in concert on June 29, 1977 at the Omni , in Atlanta , Georgia. I could not believe what I was watching. Austin Butler performed, moved, and sung just like Elvis Presley. Austin even talked like Elvis. The performance was outstanding . It seemed like , Elvis Presley was in our presence , performing for his fans . Austin Butler SHOULD GET A OSCAR FOR HIS PERFORMANCE as ELVIS. . Austin Butler has a Great career ahead of him. ELVIS PRESLEY HIMSELF WOULD BE PROUD OF AUSTIN BUTLER. What a GREAT JOB ! A Great performer , singer and actor giving his all remembering a Singer of our time, THE KING OF ROCK AND ROLL , ELVIS PRESLEY. Marian Chapman

As a black person, I can say that I was humbly surprised by all the catering that the movie did for black artists who were some of Elvis's influences. It was like the movie really kept pointing at me to say "here, now you can't say he stole it from black people. We named damn near every artist that he knew or could of saw." I'll say that it definitely exceeded my expectations of what I thought the movie was gonna do with that bit of information.

From BB King's autobiography: Born in a river cabin in Berclair, Mississippi, B.B. King told a reporter in 2010 (via the San Antonio Examiner), that he felt a kinship for Elvis because both of them "were born poor in Mississippi, went through poor childhoods and we learned and earned our way through music.” That kinship and mutual struggle fostered a friendship between Elvis and King (played in Elvis by Cyrano’s Kelvin Harrison Jr.), with the pair frequently talking music together. In the interview, King discusses how he and Elvis agreed that “Music is owned by the whole universe. It isn't exclusive to the black man or the white man or any other color. It shared in and by our souls...” King continues, “I told Elvis once, and he told me he remembered I told him this, is that ‘music is like water. Water is for every living person and every living thing.'” In King’s autobiography, Blues All Around Me, King also recalls how Elvis orchestrated a show for him at the Hilton Hotel in 1972. King claims (via the San Antonio Examiner) that Elvis “put in a call” and booked King a show in the lounge while Elvis played in the hotel’s main theater. This was likely difficult for Elvis who had long been under the thumb of his tyrannical manager Colonel Tom Parker (a.k.a. “The Snowman”). However, this was something Elvis did several times throughout his career. King speaks fondly about their shows together, saying that they would often wind up in Elvis’ suite after the shows, talking and playing music. “I'd play Lucille (his guitar) and sing with Elvis, or we'd take turns. It was his way of relaxing'…'We were the original Blues Brothers because that man knew more blues songs than most in the business - and after some nights it felt like we sang everyone one of them.” Meanwhile, others, like former music editor for Pride Magazine, Helen Kolawole, claim that Elvis appropriated the songs of Black artists getting rich and famous from other’s work. On that idea, King has also spoken out, writing in his autobiography (via Vanity Fair) that "Elvis didn’t steal any music from anyone. He just had his own interpretation of the music he’d grown up on, same is true for everyone. I think Elvis had integrity.”

Elvis took black rhythm and blues music and spread it around the world. Before Elvis (and Bill Haley) there was black rock and roll (rhythm and blues) but the mass white audiences wouldn’t listen to it. That was only for black people. After Elvis, around the world, white kids loved rock and roll and the fame for black rock/pop/blues artists followed. And the audience for that black music kept growing. A story about BB King. In the 50s and early 60s BB played for small audiences. In the late 60s he was booked to perform at the Fillmore and when BB’s car came to the auditorium, there was a line around the block. BB thought those people must be there for someone else. When he heard all those people were there for him, he broke down and cried. BB King had made the big time. Blues, soul, black pop had arrived. And Elvis was one of the reasons for that. That’s one of the things I liked about the movie. It showed the songs by black artists that Elvis sang. It showed the resistance to black music by the white mass audience. And it showed that Elvis overcame that. He paved the way.

Baz really did his homework. I watched an interview that Baz had with Sam Bell, Elvis’s black childhood friend on RU-vid. The black community in which Elvis lived as a kid seemed to really embrace him with open arms, and that Elvis was really part of the community. He learned to play piano from the sister of one of his black friends, and Sam, Elvis, and some other friends would attend religious worship and while the other friends, Sam included, wouldn’t get up where the worshipers would be shaking and dancing because they thought it uncool, Elvis got right up in there and participated, shaking and dancing. Later on, when Elvis’s family moved away to Memphis, Elvis attended both white and black churches and sang in the choir. Elvis was drawn to R&B and gospel, and sought it out in Memphis, because those were essentially HIS roots as well. And Elvis really did attend black musical functions, breaking segregation laws, when he’d already hit stardom, and took backlash for doing so. It’s patently unfair that black musicians couldn’t get their music heard, and that it took someone like Elvis, that could do the music justice, had the looks, charisma and stage presence to crack that door open finally. But he could never have done it without getting that soul when he experienced it in the black community growing up.

Saw it yesterday....a lot of inaccuracies in it. Had Elvis performing the song "Trouble" in '56 when it came out in '58...and he never performed it live until '68. Also couldn't stand the "rap/hip hop" music played when in 1955 Elvis visited the black clubs on Beale St. Showed Elvis popping pills in a car while touring in 1955...he never got into pills until he joined the Army. Also cut straight to Elvis buying Graceland when his first house that he bought after becoming famous was the house on Audubon Drive in Memphis. Showed Elvis in his Army Fatigues with the wrong rank when he met Priscilla. Just a few things that I caught. This was a good movie for the casual Elvis fan...not that true for an Elvis purist.

@chrishernandez3699 2 года назад
@@davism5 you may not have liked the rap/hip hop elements fused in with the rest of the music, but you should understand that Baz Luhrman intentionally did that so that the younger modern audience could understand how that music felt to the youth of that era. Also for the older crowd to see that much like how they disapprove of today's modern style of music, their parents or grandparents too found blues and rock n' roll to be in the same vein. You may not like it, but there are a lot of parallels between the music of Elvis and a Jack Harlow, for example.

Little Richard “We was one of many major doorways that got here by way of. Chuck Berry was one other door himself. And we’re not saying that Elvis wasn’t a major door. I might by no means say that. As a result of Elvis began white individuals to essentially sing rock ‘n’ roll”. After Presley’s loss of life, Richard grieved the lack of a great good friend and an inspiring musician. “I like him. That’s my buddy, my child. I like him. We’re superb pals, and it was a really nice loss to the music world,” he stated in an interview following Elvis’ loss of life in 1977. “Elvis is likely one of the best performers who ever lived on this world.”

Colonel Tom Parker's accent was heavier earlier on in the 50's/60's than it was late in life. He used to try to tell people the reason why his accent was odd was because he was from West Virginia. He wouldn't publicly acknowledge he was actually Dutch until late in life, despite his sister revealing it in 1960. And he only acknowledged it then because he was sued and had to state in court that he was a Dutch citizen. I don't know if it goes into in the film, but that lawsuit brought on a really odd situation in that he enlisted in the US Army under his fake name and swore allegiance to the US, opposing counsel pointed out that it should have (unofficially) renounced his Dutch citizenship. But he never became a US citizen either.

Thank you for acknowledging the unnecessary pre-criticism of this movie and movies in general. I guess they assumed the worst case scenario about how a movie chose to address aspects of a person's history, but it was refreshing to see that they at least acknowledged Elvis's relationship with Black Music, and that you can't judge a movie before you've seen it. Makes me think of the faux controversies before Joker and The Hunt were released.

I saw Elvis during his first TV appearance, when my grandparents were visiting our home. My grandmother ruined my evening by saying loudly, "He's a good singer, but if only you didn't have to look at him!" She thought that his twitching and shaking negatively affected his performance! I didn''t react to her comments, but I did feel somewhat guilty for enjoying his act! I believe that the camera caught only his top half. As a "sometime fan" of Elvis, I had a few of his records--45's. Grandma told me that she enjoyed his gospel songs. I watched a few of his movies on TV, and knew that they were "cookie cutter" films, playing up his singing and relationships with gorgeous girls. After seeing the movie with Austin Butler, I agree with your review regarding his fantastic portrayal of The King. He truly embodied the performer. I could feel the way Austin BECAME Elvis! Priscilla should have been a larger part of the film. I know that she and Lisa Marie believed that Austin was spectacular playing Elvis. Enjoyed your review! I'll be 80 in a few months and have always regretted missing an Elvis concert in Vegas, although I often went there during the '60's through the '80's. He wasn't performing any of the times I was there!

I would say that this movie is less of a biopic and more of an examination of Parker’s abusive relationship with Elvis. That’s why it kind of lives in Parker’s POV. And I kind of adore that. It takes what could have been a paint by numbers biopic and addresses the horrors he went through as one of the first major superstars. In the post Brittany Spears conservatorship times we live in, I think it’s pretty relevant to acknowledge the predatory nature of the music industry that hasn’t been addressed in biopics so far. It’s also why I’m okay with this movie glossing over major parts of Elvis’ life because it’s not really about his life, it’s about the horrors of being an abused celebrity who can’t escape their fame for one reason or another.

It sucked. Elvis was to one dimensional. So much of who he was could have been told. My mom was a huge Elvis fan. I saw him in concert back in 77 with her at the age of 13. I read the book Elvis what happened which is a pretty good account of his life. They should have used that book for the film. it would have actually focused on him and some really funny experiences. So much in that book that showed him in a good light as well as a bad one. I am shocked nobody has made a film based on it. This film just basically glosses over his life. They could have started in his high school years where he was harassed for his clothing style and hair. His friendship with Red his bodyguard who would end up saving him from alot of fights with bullies' and angry dudes jeslous about their girls going after him. The literal shock he experienced going from a dirt poor kid to having everything over night. One evening he sat on the porch said to his dad what happened how did this happen. I mean so many good stories. How he would just by strangers Cadillac's. How he collected badges. How he ran on the airport runway flashing a badge Nixon gave him and pulled over and boarded a plane and tried to arrest Pricilla's karate instructor for having an affair. Shooting out TV sets whenever Tom Jones would come on. Seriously these film makers have rocks in their heads or they are just to young to have a clue or they are clueless about the subject matter because they are a foreigner.

One criticism of the film I've heard that I do think is fair is that it's hard to contextualize why Elvis was so shocking when he came on the scene. His movements, his songs, the things that make him so edgy for lack of a better word is because it's just the norm. It can seem like a parody of a rock star if you can't remind yourself that it was brand new. I don't think that's a fault of this specific film, but it can be a challenge when the artist is ultimately so mainstream.

I felt the exact opposite. I felt from the very first performance we were shown Elvis doing in the movie, it did an AMAZING job of making it feel so alive that we were there. It contextualized it far better than it could ever be explained. Like the difference between reading history and experiencing it-- telling someone something, and painting an exact picture of it. When I saw Austin Butler as Elvis perform that first concert, I couldn't help but think "oh, so this is how we managed to rock the world."

There was some subtle work that he did in the way he portrayed the difference between the joyous energy Elvis felt on stage in his early career, and the almost pained addiction he felt in his last years (on top of everything else he does in the film) that completely knocked it out of the park for me.

When elvis recorded songs sung by black singers first, elvis didnt end their careers. he brought them to the forefront of a broader audience ie whites to accelerate their careers. Little richard and other black artists admitted that on video.

When they (Baz) have B.B. King tell Elvis that recording T.F. would cost Little Richard his career --I doubt that BB King ever said that. And Little Richard said for Elvis to do that song actually made him bigger than before. Elvis made an injection for Black music to be popular.

I knew there was a reason I liked you, Dan. Shattered Glass is also one of my all time favourite films and lately I've been slipping it into every comment regarding Hayden Christensen as a movie that shows what he is capable of. I've watched it I don't know how many times and it's always fully engrossing despite my now knowing the story like the back of my hand. It's actually got a really stacked cast. It's interesting in that while Stephen Glass is the main character and is in almost every scene as well as the framing device, most scenes don't revolve around him. It's almost always another character who goes to Stephen which starts the scene off. Which is necessary since if we followed him the main investigation throughout wouldn't work but it's still interesting to watch. Brilliant!!

I'm not a huge fan of Elvis Presley but I'm so excited to see this film mainly for Austin Butler's and Tom Hanks 's performances , it being Baz Luhrmann first film since 2013, more background on Elvis Presley 's whole life, African -Ameeican artists influences on his career and the visuals and music. This was another good and through review.

I didn't like to move at all, hate when they use too many cut scenes for a simple scene where Elvis is getting into a car. And using modern music hip hop for an era that had amazing music. I barely made it to 45' minutes.

Great review, Dan! I always had the impression that Elvis was an outcast & loner at his school because he embraced black culture & music. I'm glad this movie sets the record straight. He was as instrumental in the history of rock n' roll as the black artists who should have gotten more credit back then. It wasn't Elvis. It was the music business in white America.
@scottbachmann1962
@scottbachmann1962 2 года назад
The Black influences, if anything, were exaggerated (complete with hip hop versions of EP songs in the soundtrack) for woke street cred. His obsession with and love for white southern Gospel quartets was ignored. He often stayed up all night singing southern gospel around the piano in his hotel suite, he idolized the Blackwood Brothers and others as a young man, his only Grammy Awards were for his Gospel albums, and it was southern gospel quartets that were invited to sing at his private funeral service inside Graceland. He was big friends with J.D. Sumner and the spiritual tug of war inside of him between the sacred and the secular helped define him for those who really knew him.

3:04 Same here. I thought Colonel Tom looked like Goldmember! Butler was perfect. My mother-in-law saw Elvis live once. She saw this film and said he was as close as an actor can get. 6:57 You’re right; they respected the blues legends that he grew up listening to. He never thought of them as inferior, and the film doesn’t.

Interesting that you mentioned about folk who may not be Elvis fans, I wasn’t brought up in the Uk and a little young to have come across his stuff so I really walked into the movie just to watch something. Whilst I agree with you that it’s a little too long I did thoroughly enjoy it and have since listened to a bunch of elvis songs I hadn’t before. If anything I think it’s a great movie for folk who didn’t really know what he was about!

What kind of deal did Baz Luhrmann make with the devil that he keeps getting work directing big movies? He's literally only made one good movie in 30 years, (Moulin Rouge) and that was all style no substance.

There are a lot of folks who'd disagree with that. Moulin Rouge was a multiple Oscar nominee and many of his other films were critical and/or audience hits.

@bamabat8435
@bamabat8435 2 года назад
@@DanMurrellMoviesWith all due, I just don't know that that's true. First of all, he hasn't directed "many" films. Of his short filmography, Australia was a critical and commercial failure, Romeo+Juliet and The Great Gatsby were both divisive at best, and I honestly struggle to recall any of his other films at the moment. That's saying something, considering I'm a movie obsessive that can usually rattle off a popular director's entire filmography. Maybe I'm missing some of his works, but Moulin Rouge is the only universally celebrated film I remember of his, and while it was visually and musically stunning, it didn't offer much in the way of story. But hey, different strokes. No knock against people who dig his work. P.S: I checked out his filmography, and the only movie I failed to mention was Strictly Ballroom, which I didn't see. Maybe it was amazing. Also, I can't help but mention that I've been a fan of yours since seeing you dominate on Movie Fights way back in '15, and I think it's awesome that you actually reply to viewers, even if it is in disagreement.🤘
