Rarely do you get to see an interview with this kind of intimacy, candour and quiet resolve. Great stuff. By the way...Tommy won that second Leonard fight without question.
Conn Shawnery, Absolutely ! Vegas was very politically behind Ray Leonard...but Tommy smashed him in that second fight!! I just saw it last night on RU-vid!!
@@SCORP1ONF1RE Agreed. Sugar Ray was better than all the others. Save for Tommy Hearns. And, of course, for Marvin Hagler. But outside of those two, SRR was the best of the four kings.
I can vividly remember taking a walk in Belle Isle park in the fall of 2012. Mid-way through the walk, a large group of cars drove past me led by a funeral hearse. Initially, I didn’t know the significance, but then I realized that it was Manny saying goodbye on that chilly and cloudy afternoon. I felt fortunate to have said goodbye in a very historic location in Detroit to a legendary person that in his own way was saying goodbye to Belle Isle Park. RIP
Fantastic interview!! Emanuel Steward speaking about the Hagler fight is so articulate, and quite charismatic....I can see why he is such a legendary coach & trainer!
Excellent hall of famer. People forget that Tommy fought when he was almost 50 years old and had an excellent record. Some great fighters came out of Detroit!.
Hardest punch I’ve ever seen land, was this man, when he knocked out Duran. I thought he killed him on the spot. And Duran had a granite chin. And when he KOd Ceuvas, I’ve never seen that type of reaction to a punch. He curled up like a god damn slinky, then crumpled like an empty bag of chips. Hearns had the right hand of god. Or the devil. Either way, if he landed it, you were done. Legend.
1-of! all-time thrilling fighters! What a Team they were together. Rip Emanuel Steward! one of life's soft loving teachers! The man just warms my heart! a very-giving person! joy to listen2!
Great interview. Boxing seems different without hearing Steward commentate anymore. But theres nothing worth commentating on either way, boxers today are all ducking and waiting for the right moment. Its laughable how many boxers today have no losses on their record.
@Freedom Freedom Shawn Porter : “Even within PBC there’s fighters avoiding fighters within PBC, OK?” he said. “Guys are not fighting with their hearts, they’re fighting with their brains, and what I mean by that is that they’re trying to figure out how much money they can make and who’s the easiest one out there for me to take on.
@Freedom Freedom Andre Ward “I think a lot of people at this point get the play. You have the ace card; you have most of the welterweights [at PBC] on your side. Well played, you won the battle. But the war has yet to be fought [between Spence and Crawford], and the war has yet to be won. I think the question is not, ‘Do these guys have to fight one another?’ It’s ‘Do you want to fight one another?'” said Ward. “I love Shawn Porter, I love Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman,” Ward continued. “I respect all those guys, and I came up with those guys. But those guys are not Terence Crawford. At a certain point in time, you put the politics aside and the business of boxing aside. I’m not saying to forget your money. Get your money. But you tap your guy, your representative, on the shoulder and say, ‘Make the fight [with Crawford]. Let’s get as much as we can get, but make the fight" “Maybe legacy doesn’t mean as much to everybody as it used to, but here’s the thing. I’m not just talking about your being remembered amongst your fan base, I’m not talking about you being remembered among the people that support you. I’m talking about being in the history books where you’re never forgotten. In order for that to happen, you’ve got to fight a guy that doesn’t know how to lose, and a guy that is threatening your legacy and everything you’ve earned up until this point."
It's lovely seeing manny and Tommy together here Thomas hearts one of my favourite fights and I've no doubt if he fought today he'd KO mayweather RIP Manny
Richard Michaels Yeah because they knocked everyone that they fought out..Please troll I know you don't believe the silly shit you said because if so why bring Floyd up in the first place..The fact that you had to bring up Floyd shows you who you really think would win that fight..You didn't say shit about Roy Jones Bernard Hopkins Oscar Mosley .And the wonder why.
Ray Leonard the judges always gave him wins he didn't deserve. Against Hagler, Hagler would win the first 2:45 of the round and Ray would flurry with 15 seconds left. Even if ray won the last 15 seconds, do the previous 2 minutes and 45 seconds mean nothing?!
Tommy was the hardest puncher in every weight class he fought in, and maybe the best boxer, but his achillie's heel was his lack of stamina, and somewhat of a glass jaw...
Leonard was a over hyped media darling. With a ego to match. Tommy just did his job , and is a class A person , who never told or blamed his broken hand for his lose to hagler. People like Leonard make me sick
Man tommy your the best boxer and person What a class act. He respects emanuel as a manager and a person. That’s great Just makes me more sick the 2nd Leonard fight was a draw
To me! Hesrns was thee..best welterweight ever..he was a freak of nature. 6 ft 1..7 ft reach.. n should have beaten Leonard in their first fight..hesrns had bad leggs. If stewerd..would have contracted on hearns keggs lot more..tgey would not have tired out. Especially in his first fight with lronard..n his fught with hagler.
Yeah hearns weighed in at 145 pounds...that's the same weight another hitman Ricky Hatton weighed in against Mayweather...except Hatton was 5 foot 6 and hearns is over 6 foot!!...hearns overtrained no question but that's on him and Manny...still a great performance and one of the greatest welterweight fights in history
Sounds like a lot of excuses with. Eat! Hell , Emanuel nobody gets a perfect match! If that’s the case everyone can excuses! Hearns did win the second fight!
His career was patchy after he lost to Hearns but if you look at his run in world title fights it was outstanding in the number of wins he had - 12 out of 13 fights, with 11 wins by ko. He should get a lot of respect for that.
Manny loves talking shit... Hearns threw everything he possibly could and Hagler did not budge he didn't back up and Haglers accumulated punches did the damage on Hearns.... loves his excuses he just cant cope his creation, his fighter was no way near the best fighter of his generation... if u had a handicap against marvin why didn't u push for a rematch like u did with Leonard, They knew Hagler was all wrong for them and he would have busted him up, if it was a handicap why didn't u want to redeem yourself? you ran and escaped the division LOL
Mendez Jorge There was serious talk of a Hagler rematch until Ray Leonard announced his return. That messed things up for Tommy BUT you are right about Manny and his lousy excuses. He once claimed - I kid you not - the right hand Rahman laid Lewis out with didn't actually land and that Lennox merely slipped.
Rematch would have been pointless, hearns was a one trick pony if his opponent could take the right hand and keep coming he was in trouble ...Leonard, hagler , Barkley
Mendez Jorge they did push for a rematch. But Hagler pushed for the mandatory defense against Mugabi first. After the mugabi foght Hagler was set on retiring
D DIESEL if u believe that u are very gullable, hagler said recently he never saw so much fear in a mans eyes than he did in tommy when the right hand caught him flush on the point of the chin and he saw it didnt faze him 1%... hagler was all wrong for tommy, out of 100 fights hagler would win 100 times... Hearns had a glass jaw and more importantly stamina issues, Hagler was non stop for 15 rounds and Hearns couldnt back hagler up or keep him off him at all cos hagler could walk him down and just take flush right hands and keep coming, its just a bad match up... hearns would have got stopped 100 times out of 100
Mendez Jorge First up Hagler is my favorite fighter of all time, Hearns my #2. Tommy did have that look on his face when Hagler would not go down on his right hands but it was more disbelief than fear. Hearns was never afraid of anybody. NEVER not even Iran Barkley or any light heavyweight Hearns went 14 rnds with Ray Leonard and 15 with Benitez, stamina issues? that's crap. With the pace they were fighting neither Hagler or Hearns would have sustained it for 12 rnds. Both will still be throwing punches by the 12th but NOT at the rate of the 1st 3 rounds. Hagler's strategy was gutsy and risky. It was good for 6 rounds tops; after that Hearns would have been piling it up on the scorecards.and you have to remember that with all the blood on his face; Richard Steele would have stopped it by the 8th. But Marvelous Marvin delivered in 3 rounds! The Best that said, i don't think marvin would win with that gameplan the next time they met because a) Hearns & Steward would have already figured it out b) Hagler would have been the sme age as he was when h fought Ray. that gameplan of Haglers was really a one shot deal and even Marvin knows it wont work twice but he still had that punch that could beat Tommy. the rematch would have gone either way but I'm not buying that BS of yours that Hagler would beat Hearns 100 times if they fought 100 times. with that you're NOT analyzing anymore; just hating. you obviously have a beef with either Steward or Hearns. your posts give you away
If u know about the history of Ray Leonard u would know that leonard had 5 years off prior to the fight and the fact he became a cocaine addict which took his legs away and did not allow him to be the same fighter...plus they were both blown up almost 3 weight classes above their best weight and both were a long way from there prime Ray further from his prime both DEEP INTO THEIR 30s...but let's not forget no excuses Hearns best weight was 147 everybody he fought was dropping like flies, he was undefeated, bigger, more reach IN HIS PRIME AT 21 and he was stopped, after Ray was through with him he couldn't even stand up go watch the film and he was meant to be the devastating puncher going into the fight but Ray took All he gave and came forward, hearns was the pussy that run and jabbed
Mendez Jorge Aye but who was gonna do that? remember we're talking about one of the hardest punchers pound for pound in history, he hit you that hard most would rather step back and avoid the punches. Marvin Hagler knew to beat Tommy you had to charge and take his shit then land your own, very few knew this, Ray Leonard was able to do it in 1981 after being outboxed for so many rounds but in the rematch he had aged and wasn't able to take the same punches. Tommy was the best conventional boxer of the four.
