Today, Saturday, July 27, 2024, marks a historic day for Papua New Guinea as some of our top young minds set off on an inspiring journey to India, courtesy of the Papua New Guinea Government’s STEM scholarships.
These 30 exceptional students, 14 female and 16 male, who shined brilliantly in their Grade 12 STEM studies in 2023 at the six national schools of excellence - Sogeri, Aiyura, Kerevat, Passam, Wawin, and Port Moresby - are poised to explore and excel in fields such as Artificial Intelligence, physiotherapy, biotechnology, mathematics, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, and more.
In this uplifting video, captured just before their departure, Mr. Benny Rayappan, Assistant Secretary of National Schools of Excellence, shares heartfelt words about the students’ impending studies in India.
But the journey doesn't end here. Next month, another group of our bright STEM students will embark on their path to the USA, with a third group destined for China in September.
Spearheaded by Prime Minister Hon. James Marape, this transformative STEM initiative has already paved the way for 43 remarkable students from last year's programme to secure placements in US universities through PNG Government-funded scholarships.
This initiative is a testament to the government's unwavering commitment to advancing education and fostering global opportunities for PNG’s talented youth. Watch, be inspired, and join us in celebrating the bright future of these young pioneers.

@@malumnalu maybe but the Secondary Schools also have excess eligible students with Credits and Distinctions in Maths and Science from Grade 10. I know that NCD Secondary Schools have a lot of these students. The PNG Secondary Education Curriculum in Maths and Science under SBE has also evolved and is now more vigorous and challenging. Students are stream into Marhs and Science at Grade 11. Grade 11 Advance Maths,Chemistry, Physics and Biology is far more vigorous than what used to be taught during my time. I hope UPNG takes into account these changes to the Science and Maths curriculum at Secondary Schools level and adjust the curriculum for UPNG Science Foundation to take into account changes to curriculum at Secondary Schools level and reform their Science Foundation program.
