Seamless Integration of C++ in Conjunction with C in Embedded Applications - Sindhusha Dhulipala - CppNow 2023

This presentation is a crash course on lessons learnt working on various embedded applications which use C and C++ in conjunction with each other. There is a myth in academic circles that embedded applications must be employing C as the only language during development. While C has its uses and can be quite versatile, there are limits to using C in developing applications. As the complexity of a machine increases, the number of components increase and it becomes necessary to employ model based development to shorten the time to deliver. Model Based development can be achieved by using C++. This session will go over the different concepts of C++ utilized in writing embedded software and touch upon its intricacies as it interfaces with C. There will be a brief overview of what real time systems are about and different instances we can utilize C++ features to achieve our goal.

Thanks for the insights! I do C++ in class 3 medical devices and I'm a huge proponent of using C++ in embedded systems in general

I thank you so much for your detailing about c++ in embedded software, as an embedded software student, this is very useful. Can you please recommend me a good sourcesof learning c++ completely?

I am an embedded sw dev using cpp from last 2/3 years. I believe even allowing dynamic memory allocation out of the box is quite sinister. Having a pre-allocated pool off which you get your memory chunks out by re-defining your new() or using placement new is still ok but otherwise a big no no. And honestly I have never seen exception handling being used in emebedded software.
