I love this story of a little girl finding her way in the world. Thank God for the kindness of people who see and listen to these children. Teachers , shop keepers and neighbors and friends along their journey. God bless these children.
Exquisitely read and, of course, exquisitely written. This is the most moving book I've ever heard (and read). I'm in awe. I will listen and re-read over and over again. Thank you to Claire Keegan for creating such a story and to Aoife McMahon, whose voice is perfect for this rendering.
I’ve read and reread “Foster” many times and listened to several audiobook versions of the story, but Ms. McMahon’s performance is far and away the best I’ve heard. Even though I knew what was coming, I found myself getting misty-eyed in the final moments of her reading. Having the nameless little girl twice cry out “Daddy!” as an actual warning to John, rather than just as an expression of her love for him, is an interpretation I haven’t heard before, but it still conveys the message that the relationship between John and the little girl has grown into one of father and daughter over the summer. Which makes me believe that the Kinsellas will remain part of the child’s life, and that John and Edna won’t give up the chance they’ve been given to be parents again. I’ve seen “An Cailín Ciúin”-“The Quiet Girl”-many times since it was first shown at my local independent cinema here in Kingston, Ontario last March, and what I’d really like to hear some day soon, before she gets too much older and her voice changes, is a reading of “Foster” by Catherine Clinch. Meaning no slight to Ms. McMahon, I think Miss Clinch is the natural choice to present this beautiful and touching story, and I’m sure she’d do a wonderful job.
@@Tommy-xy1eh Yes, but the little hardcover Grove Press edition I have is only 92 pages long. You can read it in one sitting, but you'll want to take your time to savour the writing.
