Dr. Kaufman explains what to do if you have emergency dental pain and cannot reach your dentist.
Hello and welcome to a New York dental minute. I am Doctor Zev Kaufman.
At some point in our lives, we've experienced extreme dental pain. Be it the severe pain after the extraction of wisdom teeth, maybe a to root canal pain caused by a neglected cavity, or pain after periodontal surgery, we can all agree dental pain is the worst!
So what do you do when you are alone, at night, and you have to deal with dental pain, and you cannot get a hold of your dentist, or your dentist is away? There is actually an excellent solution to dental pain and it's available over the counter.
As long as you can find, and take, the following over the counter medications, you will be ok.Get both acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Motrin). Take two tablets of each, together, with a tall glass of water and repeat every 6 to 8 hours.
By themselves, acetaminophen and ibuprofen work well, however when taken together, they actually work almost as well as the much stronger, narcotic pain medications which require a doctor's prescription.Call your dentist, first thing in the morning and arrange to be seen right away. If you do not have a dentist, my staff and I will be more than happy to refer you, free of charge, to a local dentist to take care of your problem.
So now, you know... From Prosthodontics & Implant Surgery of Manhattan, where people come in with missing teeth and leave with winning smiles, I am Doctor Zev Kaufman.

Dear brother/sister experiencing toothache, Try putting cold water in your mouth to soak the problem tooth. The relief is almost immediate but temporary because you need to replace it after a few minutes when the water becomes warm. Try not to drink the water unless you are thirsty (otherwise, you might upset your ion balance). The cold water helps reduce pressure in your tooth by reducing the air volume produced by the infection thereby reducing the pain. I agree that ibuprofen works but it appears you need to actually experience the pain for it to work. One afternoon, a few hours after lunch, I felt toothache so I drank ibuprofen. I know the pain won't go away instantly so I kept ice / cold water in my mouth to numb it (works almost instantly!). The pain returns when the water warms up after a couple of minutes so you have to spit out the water and replace it with a cold one again. I felt that ibuprofen does not seem to make the pain stop so I spent hours soaking my tooth in cold water. In my next dose (6 hours later) and 30 minutes after drinking the drug (to ensure some of it is already circulating in my body), I decided to stop soaking the tooth in cold water. The initial pain was disorientating and excruciating! But it slowly eased after about a minute. It was still unbearably painful, so I had to soak it in cold water again and repeat feeling the pain around five more times until eventually, the pain stopped (at least, until my next dose again). I hope this helps someone, too. And if it did, please consider offering your suffering to Jesus to honor what He endured for our sins.

Nonya Busi : drugs are like people, not all of them work for everyone. My advice is very general and works for most people. There are people who are allergic and obviously can not use them. Others find drugs of a certain kind or class ineffective. Talk to your doctor and figure out what is best for you.

It definitely does for me. You have to take between 600 MG and 800 mg for it to work on its own.

how much ibuprofen, how much Tylenol? It comes in different strengths!

We usually give our patients 2 tablets of 200 mg ibuprofen each and 2 tablets of 500 mg acetaminophen each. Those 4 tablets together three times a day or every 8 hours. That usually does the trick for most people.
