Dr. Kaufman explains what to do if you have emergency dental pain and cannot reach your dentist.
Hello and welcome to a New York dental minute. I am Doctor Zev Kaufman.
At some point in our lives, we've experienced extreme dental pain. Be it the severe pain after the extraction of wisdom teeth, maybe a to root canal pain caused by a neglected cavity, or pain after periodontal surgery, we can all agree dental pain is the worst!
So what do you do when you are alone, at night, and you have to deal with dental pain, and you cannot get a hold of your dentist, or your dentist is away? There is actually an excellent solution to dental pain and it's available over the counter.
As long as you can find, and take, the following over the counter medications, you will be ok.Get both acetaminophen (Tylenol) and Ibuprofen (Motrin). Take two tablets of each, together, with a tall glass of water and repeat every 6 to 8 hours.
By themselves, acetaminophen and ibuprofen work well, however when taken together, they actually work almost as well as the much stronger, narcotic pain medications which require a doctor's prescription.Call your dentist, first thing in the morning and arrange to be seen right away. If you do not have a dentist, my staff and I will be more than happy to refer you, free of charge, to a local dentist to take care of your problem.
So now, you know... From Prosthodontics & Implant Surgery of Manhattan, where people come in with missing teeth and leave with winning smiles, I am Doctor Zev Kaufman.
