What do you mean if they had one they still would never know?
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад
@@rx7sportscar Usually knuckle breaks are the culmination of several different impact forces on the drawbar. I have personally seen knuckles that were ±90% broken for weeks or months even, and finally broke the rest of the way through with just the slightest force on an uphill grade. The last time I saw this, it was Car 78 of an 84 car autorack train, so there were only 7 loaded cars tugging on that knuckle, but it still broke. It was also a long walk for the poor conductor. Even if they had DPU in the middle or on the rear, damage like that would have gone unnoticed until it broke. It's probably a little less common between cars that couple and uncouple often but for unit trains and cars that remain coupled for thousands of miles, they may never know until the equipment fails.

@alwhalen3488
@alwhalen3488 3 года назад
Couple of questionable pole loads on that train also. Shifted load at 1:49 and then about 10 cars after that some broken straps. Good reason to stay back from a moving train.
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад
Probably not. Usually flat spots are caused when the wheel is stationary and dragged with friction force of brakes applied, rather than while moving and friction force applied. In other words, flat spots do not happen much when stopping, but they happen a lot when starting while brakes are applied. This happens often when conductors forget or neglect handbrakes. Just the same, any time a train has gone into emergency while traveling at a speed of 10 MPH or more, the equipment and the tracks have to be inspected before they get rolling again. If the track buckles or equipment fails, they need to know before it becomes a major hazard.

I'm puzzled how knuckles can stand up to the constant jerking and slamming let alone the torque and tension of weight they pull. Then, look at the pin that drops that keeps the knuckles in a closed coupled position. I don't get how a rail stands up under all that weight. I'm fascinated by this!

@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад
Engineer did not initiate emergency brake application, it went into emergency when the air hoses separated. And when the bottom end of the train fell off, there would have been a sudden jolt in the cab that told the engineer why they were going into emergency.

@@thejimr What on earth are talking about, why would some trains go in emergency brake automatically?
@justadudeffs
@justadudeffs 3 года назад
@@orionharmon6017 the air brake system on a train is designed to fail safe meaning no or very low air pressure =emergency brakes applied. When the knuckle broke the air line did too... the air left the lines rapidly and once the air pressure is low enough the train automatically goes into emergency braking. The train crew didn't need to take any action as the system did exactly what it was designed to do.

One thing i did notice no hand brakes were ever applied by either the conductor or MOW on the cut of cars that broke away from the train. If air bleeds off you got some free rollers and that aint good. Never rely on air i dont care if you set 50 to 100 cars out put a couple hand brakes on them.
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад
Probably just didn't see it in the video. Though there were many hands on that equipment and 20-ish cars would take a while to bleed off enough to roll. On the other hand I have been yelled at for not tying brakes on a cut of 17 cars, all on the ground, some were no longer in contact with their wheels anymore.
@jasonbooth5182
@jasonbooth5182 3 года назад
@@SD40Fan_Jason we had some old gondolas used to spot at the papermill soon as you break away after I've secured them air is already bleeding. Poorly maintained railcars even though they were on our line they would never pass a class 1 air test. I never rely on air. Ive seen a many conductors fired for not doing something simple as walking back and putting 2 or 3 handbrakes on a cut of cars. If the yard, road foreman doesn't get ya. The FRA definitely gonna catch ya.
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад
@@jasonbooth5182 yep I agree. I had a rock train in Texas that should've been decommissioned and scrapped 15 years before I got it. Instead we were using it to haul Rocks and rubble to the seaport. It took 15 lbs reduction to get any brakes at all and by the time the rear had a set the front bled off. UP said it was okay though and yet we had to keep using it. I didn't trust the handbrakes I really didn't trust the air. On a slight grade I was ordering the crew to put 30 handbrakes and then test it. I was glad to see it not ever come back.
@jasonbooth5182
@jasonbooth5182 3 года назад
@@SD40Fan_Jason if it's got wheels and abrakes that will partially work the class 2 railroads dont give a shit about maintaining the equipment or whoever they're leased to. The only time is when it' hits that Class 1 that railcar better be able to qualify or the y card it to bring it to compliance.
@SD40Fan_Jason
@SD40Fan_Jason 3 года назад
@@jasonbooth5182 unfortunately we interchanged that train with UP. It had their power and their marker on the bottom, so for as far as they were concerned, it was a good train.
