Ladies gents and teddy bears, sometimes things can go wrong on the ground with aircraft but now and again, things can go wrong whilst airborne. Should this happen, an emergency landing will take place and aircraft will squawk 7700. Because runway ops will cease for a long period of time, sometimes 30-40 minutes, the F-15s that took off recently have been recalled. This is for safety reasons, for example some F-15s may be on minimum fuel or are on a short sortie. Emergency aircraft always take priority and there are options to divert to nearby stations such as Mildenhall.
The emergency F-15E Strike Eagle of the 492d Fighter Squadron will release a tail hook which is like a metal rod with a hook and the objective is to ’catch the arrestor cable’. The fire department, crash teams and 48th Maintenance Squadron are in position to assist. Thought the arresting cable on carriers are similar to cables here at bases, the carrier ones will bring the aircraft to an abrupt halt, where as the cables used at base, bring the aircraft to a more gradual stop.
A Little more info on Arrestor Gear
Now the cable or arrestor cable is known as different terms in RAF and USAF. In the RAF, it is know as RHAG, Rotary Hydraulic Arrestor Gear. The aircraft arresting system is designed to safely bring aircraft to a stop in the event of an emergency. It is used with the aircraft arresting hook to “catch” the jet.
When an in-motion aircraft develops an emergency, the aircrew has to decide if they need to use the arresting system. If needed, the pilot deploys the aircraft’s hook, and lands the plane at least 1,000 feet from the arresting system. The aircrew will contact tower to request and confirm the 'cable'.
The hook drags on the surface of the runway (which we have seen in the video) until it comes in contact with the 1.25-inch steel cable. Once the aircraft’s hook captures the cable, the cable rips the nylon cords, holding it flat on the runway, and unravels its attached nylon tapes from storage reels.
As the tapes are unraveled, the reels turn a hydraulic pump that applies pressure to a set of modified brakes. It is these brakes that bring the aircraft to a stop.
When a jet that is not using the system to stop drives over the cable, the cable bounces. If the cable is not held down, it may damage the jet. Small pieces of nylon rope are used to hold the cable flat on the runway which is why some aircraft cannot go over the cable, such as the Embraer ERJ145 which we see at RAF Coningsby.
The arrestor gear system is important as it is the only safe of stopping an aircraft with only a minimal amount of damage while preventing the loss of its crew. This is why we see many training scenarios using the arrestor gear. The more they train for this, this less mistakes made and it also gives airmen and ground crew (inc. Fire Department and Maintenance teams) the repeated training for when they will be faced with the real thing.
Each time the system is used, the nylon tape must be inspected and rolled back onto its storage reels and is then returned to its home at the start of the runway and tied down with nylon rope. The arresting system allows the pilots a sense of security. Every time a bird is caught lives are saved. With minimal damage to the aircraft, millions of dollars are also saved in the Air Force's assets.
So the cable can be used on an aircraft landing with gear issues, hydrualic issues or any issues that the aircraft has related to it being unable to stop properly. However, the cable can also be used on takeoff too.

Oii oiii ladies gents and teddy bears. Thank goodness for a safe landing and all crew were safe. For your info; Fighter jets and most training fast jets have arresting hooks (tail hooks) but this and the actual cable on a carrier are completely different. Carrier aircraft have a strengthened airframe along with a more hardcore tail hook. Non carrier aircraft are not suitable to land on a carrier as they do not have strengthened airframes or hooks. In fact, will completely damage the aircraft and possibly snap the hook. The cable itself on a carrier is different also and made to put the aircraft to a much harsher halt. Hope this helps

Also when there is an emergency aircraft, it is more COMMON for non emergency aircraft to return to base FIRST before the emergency aircraft. Why? Because the runway ops will be suspended for up to 30-40 mins and safer for the emergency aircraft to dump fuel too.

Safety is paramount, no matter what. Even though aircrews are well rehearsed for emergencies, it's always a worry but it goes to show, how very skilled they are. Ted, you're always respectful and mindful that in emergency situations, respect for the aircrews & ground crews is crucial. A huge relief everyone comes home safe.

It's certainly no accident that the pilot got that perfect! They train, then train again, then train some more. Its for those reasons that they are cool in times of troubles. So if there is one single piece of evidence you need too see, then this is it. Always practicing and expect the unexpected. To the pilot. You rock!! You fly an F15E beautifully and safely. Total admiration from me in Norfolk.

That was fascinating on several counts:- I did not know that the F15s had an arrestor hook. The pilot did an excellent job of landing. Last but not least, that was a great video- nicely captured. PS. I note from your earlier comment, that non-emergency aircraft land first which makes excellent sense, but in dire emergencies, I suppose they could always land next door at Mildenhall? Whatever, my wife and I enjoy the almost daily airshows over our home near the Wash- they were practicing dog-fights yesterday. Love the afterburner sound.

Oii Oii thanks for your comment. Yes, most of not all fighter jets have an Arrestor Hook. And this is correct regarding the non-emergency aircraft landing first. This all depends on scenarios and seriousness of emergencies and if Mildenhall is available. Lakenheath Tower manage both Lakenheath and Mildenhall so is useful in that sense but of course, it depends on the situation at Mildenhall too. Most RAF bases have a specify airfield diversion designated for each day also. Thanks again for your comment 🤙🏼 🗽🇺🇸

They will try to land other aircraft first if the mishap situation allows it, as runway operations will cease for quite a bit after the cable is used. Well done crew!

Absolutely spot on. This is totally true and also the area needs to be safe when dumping fuel so again, all aircraft need to be recalled first 🤙🏼

I happened to see this event on flight radar 24 ! I just happened on it as a 7700 and followed its track while it flew around for a while, clearly trying to work the issue and resolve before, as it turns out, finally taking the cable. Excellent catch here! 👏🏻

most air force jets have hooks for situations exactly like this. However, they aren't as durable as carrierborne jets' for obvious reasons.

@@mgomez5606 there are 3 hydro systems. PC 1, PC 2, and utility. All 3 have an A and B circuit.

I wonder if this pilot ever qualified a BAK12 system. We always asked for an actual aircraft to run the qual test rather than using some of our other means, and they'd rarely if ever accept.
