EMERGENCY POD: Dan Hurley Turns Down Reported 6yr/$70M From Lakers. Not Big Enough? What Next?

Well, the news indeed arrived on Monday, and it wasn't what Lakers fans wanted to hear. Dan Hurley said thanks, but no thanks, to the Lakers, and will remain in Storrs, Connecticut to coach the Huskies.
So the Lakers are still without a head coach, except now they have a high profile failure in the headlines.
Why did they fail? It's possible that Hurley was never leaving, and was only using the Lakers as leverage. It's possible that the pull from UConn, with a chance for a 3-peat and deep family ties to the east coast, was too much to walk away from. It's possible that money wasn't going to be the, or even a, primary consideration.
ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported that the Lakers offered Hurley 6 years, and $70 million, which would have put Hurley in the top 6 in NBA salaries. That clearly wasn't a big enough offer to make money a compelling factor.
So why didn't the Lakers go bigger? What comes next?

I just don’t think that’s a big enough difference for Hurley. Now we don’t know what UConn offered but money talks and the lakers could have made it about money.

If you think Lakers should have offered more you can just say that w/o vaguely referring to taxes as if they made a difference. People making that argument don't even know what the actual difference in taxes/liability would be. If Uconn pays him more hes gets what he wanted, a pay raise and a chance at 3 peating. And his Fam gets to stay home. Happy wife, happy life.

If Lue was in Hurley's position (b2b champ, possible 3peat, comfortable in his current system, family comfortable where they're at) and Ballmer REALLY believed HE was the guy for the future, to lead his team into the future post Kawhi/PG for many years and you needed a Godfather offer to sway him away from all that, I believe Ballmer would have been willing to offer that in that context. If he believes this is the guy and you wanna go all in and do everything you can to get him.

@@antoine6760 I wouldn't be surprised necessarily but that's a lot of ifs. Your first sentence makes my point, just because he has money doesn't mean he's always going to write a blank check. Like my OP said, a lot of assumptions are being made there, that's fine but don't project that like it's real and Lakers should have done the same as the hypothetical in your head. Ballmer has never paid a coach that much and is trying to cut back on luxury taxes right now. So who knows. Lakers could have offered more, sure, but by all accounts so far, money had nothing to do with the decision.

In my opinion the question should be is there any reputable coach that wants to coach LeBron at age 40 and deal with his son who is not NBA ready. Does any reputable coach want to deal with the front office cutting off their knees to appease the superstars instead of holding them accountable in all their aspects of playing. The Lakers job is not a great job anymore. Phil Jackson won't coach LeBron James because they don't like each other. Jeannie Buss won't let Jerry West come back because she doesn't like him because he's old school. Riley would never come back because of how the family runs the business now. Unfortunately it's a clown show and basketball has gone out just for profits. It's no longer the name on the front of the jersey, it's the name on the back that drives Jeannie and her consortium and her father would never have tolerated that. He would have made sure Hurley would have been the coach. Remember he moved Shaq because he felt a younger team with Kobe Bryant would eventually win more rings and his intuition came true. Jeannie isn't thinking long terms. She's going for the short instant gratification of still having LeBron James and drafting his son for profits

JJ Redick is a professional athlete that has gone through the off season, he understands this is a business. More importantly JJ is a admirer of Hurley and you can imagine he's smart enough to see there's a difference between 15 years head coaching and back to back championships vs A guy who even though he knows what he's doing, has never coached on a level above his kids team. You go after that 10 out of 10 times, there's no argument there. The fact that he's even in the conversation with zero experience should be enough to carry any ego he may or may not have.

Hurley was the unicorn. No one else has the coaching chops to go with the intensity needed to put LeBron in check. The only successful pivot is to give a 1-2 year deal to Coach K so that he can reset the culture like Dan would've, and then let Coach K groom a talented assistant to succeed him. Anything else seems like a waste of time. Unless we can manage that move, the team has just been set back several years, if not decades.

Hurley played the Lakers. No way was he going to trade the UCONN campus for a work environment at a El Segundo industrial park. I heard about a high school math teacher that taught for 50 years. I think Lakers fans are massively underrating the factor that if you’re the next head coach you’ll most likely have to deal with the sideshow of developing LeBrons son with a wasted 2nd rd pick. That would have me truly questioning if we’re really trying to win and If I’m Hurley I’d probably turn the job down as well along with all the other dysfunction in the Org for slightly less millions.

@@bfns23 I don’t pay attention to the draft or college ball until after the picks are made. Lakers have gotten plenty of steals in the late first/2nd round over the years so don’t just say “who cares, it’s just a 2nd.”
