Emergency Preparedness - Best Ways to Purify Water

I recorded this video months ago but am releasing it now (before I planned to) in light of Hurricane Harvey which has devastated the Houston area and surrounding areas as well. As we all should do our part to HELP THOSE IN NEED IN HOUSTON, TEXAS (as I am planning my part as well), we should also be reminded to prepare for emergencies whether it be a tropical storm like Hurricane Harvey or Katrina, or whether it be some other disaster. If you would like to help, organizations such as Samaritan's Purse or the Red Cross are providing assistance and accepting donations.
Purifying water is critical in the event of a disaster, camping, visiting foreign countries, or simply for general survival preparation. There are plenty of options from Iodine tablets, bleach, boiling, sawyer filters, berkley filters, lifestraws, etc. Don't be caught unprepared.

Interesting tidbit about the sawyer mini filter, it's also the same thread as a standard garden hose. You could connect it to a rain water collection setup and use it to filter any nastiness.

The sawyers are fantastic. Individual filters are only $20.00 for 100,000 gallons of filtration...how can you beat that? There are compressed towels for sale ( much like handi-wipes) stronger than paper, that make a perfect pre-filter, to strain out most of the nastier stuff from the water before filtering it.(about the size of a Mentos) Available on Amazon 15 bucks for 200...

I've hiked over 4500 miles on America's National Scenic Trails. The only times I've seen someone get sick from water that was not properly treated was when those people used UV light to purify. Boiling is obviously the best way to purify water but it takes time and resources to do that as well as wait for the water to cool before consuming. When it comes to purifying water quickly, filtering and chemical treratment (aqua mira) is the best. Just one hikers opinion. Great Video!

I went hiking in zion with a group from school and we hiked about 8 miles from our vehicles. A student took the pump filter we had without telling anyone and filled his jug in some really sediment laden water that just plugged that filter so much it wasnt nearly efficient enough anymore to meet our needs (there were 10 of us). Teacher had a small number of iodine tablets as a backup and I had enough for 30 liters on top of it. The teacher made the hike back to the vehicle to go buy another filter and had me use the tablets to treat water for the rest of us. Having those tablets as a backup really prevented a poor situation as we were all basically out of that point and were planning to refill soon but then the filter was clogged. Id recommend those tablets to anyone and everyone

Hi John/Bob, nice video! Keep 'em coming! I wanted to point out an issue with water filters about which I've only recently become aware. The porous filter elements in most water filters work by having pores smaller than the smallest bacteria and parasites like giardia (but not the smaller viruses as Bob points out, which chemical treatment and boiling will do). The problem is that water remaining in the filter element after use can freeze and the expansion cracks the filter, rendering them useless and you would never know. This has shaken my confidence in filters somewhat, especially if on a hike and it freezes every night of your trip (we live in Alaska). I don't know how well you can (or if you can) remove enough water from the filter after use to make this a non-issue, but maybe Bob has knowledge of this and can elaborate. I need to do some more research on this. I have an old PUR water filter that had a porous filter with an iodine matrix and a charcoal filter as a last stage that was great. The iodine matrix killed viruses and the charcoal removed the taste. However, after Katadyn bought PUR, they no longer offered the filters. The replacement filters now lack the iodine matrix and virus protection. I've been looking to upgrade, but need to learn more about the freezing issue.

This is great info, thank you both!! One other option for the mobile/outdoor is the MSR Guardian. It isn't small like the Sawyer but is comparable in size to the Katadyn Vario. It will filter down to the virus level. I think it's a .05 micron pore size vs. the .2 of the Vario. I own both and have used them on multi-day backpacking trips. Very pleased with both. The Guardian may be a bit overkill for the high-mountain lakes and rivers/streams I was at but it's nice to know there's that extra level of protection that takes out viruses. Another drawback is that the Guardian is pretty spendy. Thanks again for bringing us this info John, strong work!!!

Great info John. Remember kids, we take water for granted in our society. I participated in Hurricane Sandy here in NJ. Boil water alerts AKA: "Water Plant filtration failure causing bacterial micro organisms to proliferate" are a real thing. Water not coming out of your tap is a real thing! Don't let your mental Normalcy Bias (complacency) be your weak link.. Get yourself a water filter! You'll be a bigger asset to the team when you don't have the Sh*ts. ~ Shane

I have a Berkey and have used it for years for 100% of our drinking water. Still going strong on the original ceramic filters. I take it apart and give it a good scrub less than once a year - more like every other year. It is only filtering well water (which we bath in, cook with, wash with, etc - but has a slight iron taste my wife didn't like). It more than paid for itself in the reduction in bottled water (which we still use for convenience and guests, but more like a case of 24 per year rather than two per week - which was what my wife was drinking). Get one, put it in your kitchen, and you won't regret it. They look sharp as well (oh, and they greatly reduce the need for filtering/cleaning for the Kuring). We have a clear water creek within easy walking distance (very easy if the neighbors are cool with me hooking the cart to the tractor and cutting down through their back yard - which in an emergency they would be), so having good water to put through the Berkey is not an issue for me - but having buckets and some old sheets for a pre-filter system will greatly increase the efficiency of the Berkey (especially if it is doing more than just drinking water). Of course, you don't need fine filtration for anything you are going to be boiling sufficiently. Lifestraws are in the get home bags in both vehicles. I don't use them for camping; I have an old pump style filter for that, which does a far better job, especially since it has an attachment that locks onto 2-liter bottles. The joy of that is that empty 2-liter bottles weight nothing and they seal well and can usually slide down into the back corners of your pack keeping the weight near your back (which is good). Having one dedicated to being the "dirty" and one or two dedicated to being clean lets you not crouch over the water source and pump. Rather, you fill the dirty with water (which likely started the trip clean and filled with potable water you drank/refilled canteens with already) and carry it with you to your camp (especially helpful if your camping spot is further down the trail than the last reliable water source). Then, in the convenience of camp, you can sit back and pump the dirty into and empty clean while you watch the fire, wait for food to cook, etc. So, my advice - get the Berkey. It is worth the coin. You can get the filters you use to drill out 5 gallon buckets and make a ghetto Berkey with if you can't swing the money, but the Berkey is something that looks nice and you will use day to day in your home now - rather than gathering cobwebs in the shed.

I have the travel Berkey water system. However, the only filters I can find now in 2024 are the cheap knockoffs. I'd like to know if I can make my own filter system inside my Berkey. Will layers of these things work in place of the filters? Layers of sand, active charcoal, and small stones are on top. Pour the water on top and let it drain until it drips into the bottom of the Berkey.

A note most know here but worth sharing to people new to the issue: Lifestraws will be ruined if frozen. The Sawyer Mini is small enough to keep in your pocket and protect from freezing. But remember neither filters bacteria.

I think you mean neither filter viruses. Both DO filter bacteria

I almost bought filters from Amazon, but I'd rather this business, thanks for this video.

The sawyer filters are great, but I would go with the next size of sawyer filter than that the weight and size increase is negligible compared to the increased flow.

I recently bought a Sawyer for my EDC bag and an Alexapure Pro for the house. I recommend Alexapure Pro over a Berkey because they're cheaper and use way better filters.
