i can't believe the morons that drive too fast and damage their vehicles just for the sake of making a splash. Its fine those that have vehicles that are designed or capable of doing so such as the 4x4's with snorkels or high sitting vehicles like HGV's (depending where the air intake is) and tractors.

@James_Rivett I might argue that some people drive fast not to make splashes but because they think it's the best option. I witnessed a friend doing it and I said the faster you drive through water the more damage you are likely causing. I'm still not sure it registered in her brain 😂

Under section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is illegal to splash someone as it amounts to driving “without reasonable consideration for other persons.” Those found guilty of deliberately driving through puddles and splashing pedestrians will likely be hit with a £100 fixed penalty notice and three penalty points if caught by police. However, should motorists be deemed to be driving in a manner that “amounts to a clear act of incompetence, selfishness, impatience, and aggressiveness” then the maximum punishment of a £5,000 fine could be levelled. If drivers fail to pay the £100 fixed penalty or refuse the penalty notice they could also face the maximum £5,000 fine if the case is taken to court.

@zo7782: Driving through water is an offence in this case as people got wet which is a assault and battery. It goes back to the old case law of Pursell v Horn [1838] and driving like that is considered to be Caseless driving. I don't necessarily agree with it but those are the facts.

@@andrewmaiden3738 This is a Ford! Not a Puddle!! So CANNOT be Fined for Splashing. Big difference in Claims due to Location. Everything at a Ford is at Personal Risk and Expense of those involved. Only thing to be gained here is a Fraud case to the Claimant. 👍

and loitering is also an offence@@andrewmaiden3738 The police would have to prove it was A possible to drive without making a splash, B that it was done with intent, and C that the pedestrians were walking and no bystanders. Warrants no more than a warning, and is a complete and utter waste of resources HOWEVER I do think most of those who drive through this ford do so like complete moronic idiots with little care for their vehicles or others property. The section you refer to (section 3 of the RTA 1988) states Careless, and inconsiderate, driving. If a person drives a mechanically propelled vehicle on a road or other public place without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place, he is guilty of an offence. The example given is "Driving through puddles causing water to splash on pedestrians". You would have a hard time finding a judge who would prosecute for splashed coming from a FORD @andrewmaiden3738 normally as many were, but those who drove through like idiots to make a big splash justify a warning.

Plenty of these people went through much safer and better than all of the emergency service workers...... bit strange that if you ask me. Some go through really slow and get pulled over while the police or ambulance when not responding to anything plow through it..... hmmm

if the water covers your exhaust pipe on a diesel it can blow up your engine or sucked up the air intake in the engine bay, i thought the police would have been trained for this,it appears they are not too bright

The public had a duty here to obstruct the police vehicles with their presence. The police aren't allowed to run over multiples of pedestrians wishing to cross the road. They would have gotten the message soon enough that their stay wouldn't be a fruitful one.

Did the fines they dished out pay for the Insignia that they wrote off? It's an absolute double standard to see coppers flying through the puddle but then hang around to fine people doing the same. I try my best to get behind police but in this instance they're all a bunch of jobsworths
