999 out of 1000 mechanics/dealerships/trans shops would have soaked this woman 3 to 5 thousand for a new transmission. All it needed was a new filter and fluid. Honest mechanics are like a great spouse. Keep them for a lifetime.
I'm a fca tech. This is the first thing I check on these 62te trans when the pump whines. I have seen filters get clogged with only 40k miles. I would say around 80% of the time it just needs a new filter. It's stupid that fca recommends trans service every 120k. I would rec every 30 to 60k tops.
At our shop we never sell a transmission without first removing the pan to inspect ... should be standard practice but there’s bad apples in every industry. And if 999/1000 customer wouldn’t blame the tech for doing an improvised/emergency repair that fails techs would probably be more likely to do it... just sayin
Been there. Rebuilt trannys for years and started to do a rebuild on a ford 5r55w. Got about 10 qts of oil out of the pan and wondered if it was ever going to stop. Had no filter, was overfilled time compensate. I installed a new filter after the rebuild.
lmao, that's what I was thinking the whole time. I've been working on cars I've purchased over the years and ran into hack job repairs that someone has done. it's always dumbfounding! This was a clever one for an emergency tho. but some ass out there is going to go sale their car like this.
I retired from the motor trade 10 years ago, well i thought i did until i started watching your channel lol, but love your videos because of the thought process you use to diagnose and fix a problem, and this on the spot quick and tempory fix to get the customer out of trouble was brilliant, how many people would have thought of it, not many including myself. You are the man and keep um coming.
Definitely did the right thing; customer needs it on the road, and what other damage could you do to the transmission, it's already been compromised pretty badly.
I find it amazing that you have no accent. I speak 2 languages and know how much work it takes to speak fluently. I am also amazed that you have a PhD. A tribute to immigrants.
These are the sort of calls that can open doors to an independent mobile tech. Being the guy to overcome adversity on short notice and save the day like that can win you a fleet account. The first call gets you their attention, the second call builds consistency, then all you need is a correct diagnosis and repair on a recurring issue shops haven't been able to fix. After the third fix, it's time to turn your attention to the Fleet Manager and ask with genuine concern, "How often are you having issues like this?" Even if you don't get an exclusive account with them, it could very much be worth their while to keep you on a priority retainer. :)
My 1st comment on RU-vid ever. Excellence in any form form is lacking in the world today. I love learning from people who take the extra steps and care about the best, most efficient result. Fantastic work on diagnosing and fixing this transmission! The nation needs more people like you.
Hard to believe there's isn't some sort of bypass scheme engineered into it for such a scenario, like they do with oil engine filters...Luckily, there's PHAD with the ingenuity to meet these challenges of manufacturers defects and faults...Great save Ivan, you make us wrenchers proud! 🤗
I would think you could find a filter for a different model vehicle that would work. But since no stores open, nope. Never would have thought of doing it your way.
Innovation great job! I specialized in Automatic transmission for many years. Not only did you get these people going, you dis so in a parking lot. Hats off to you!
That was truly awesome Ivan. Putting a clear CYA statement on the receipt was the only way I would have done it myself. Very impressive diag and repair sir!
Ivan.what would I have done well I guess I would have called you. Ivan, you are truly amazing. Helping that veteran the last time paid off this time. Your the best Artie 👍👍👍
Nice, quick 'repair'. It was obvious the pump was starving and you got fluid to it, albeit crudely. It worked. It was an emergency fix. Not much material involved. I call it a Victory.
Very creative repair. Totally acceptable fix to get the lady down the road until a proper repair was made. Glad it was so simple and you had the various hoses to make it work!
Ivan awesome fix. I don't think i would have attempted that repair like what you did. I would have waited till the next day to repair. 5 Star repair. 300.000 miles great gearbox that van has.
@@mark98070 If you live in the hills, they do plenty of shifting on the interstates around here. Going from 800 ft to 3,000 feet at 70 MPH over a span of 100 miles requires tons of shifting. Some parts of the US have hills.
Absolutely the same as what you did. when you have no time no parts and you have to get the job done short of renting another vehicle if that’s even possible.....
Brilliant! I would have walked away when i herd the pump wining. It makes perfect sense that a broken filter would make the pump sing! Nice follow through and a real clever repair. Good work Ivan!
How is this for improvising? Back in 89 I was stuck on the road with a bad fuel pump on the 83 corolla, carbureted. I was able to fit out a fuel pump and tank using the windshield washer system. We drove home 75 miles on the setup without incident. Thankfully cars were simple back then.
Some people would rather do nothing at all regardless of the consequences, than to do anything a "wrong" way and risk lesser consequences. Engineers and problem-solving techs aren] NOT among those. Ivan could become a great engineer if he was interested.
Bet it never gets fixed beyond what you did. What?! They actually took the van back in? Wow. I would've done it BUT only if the customer approved of it. It's not like it's someone's baby, it's a work truck that needs to get running again.
That's awesome, Keith! I was wondering if this one would get your seal of approval ;) Also surprised by the Pentastar and the transmission going 300k miles and not ticking!
I think transmissions would be much more likely to be serviced regularly if they had a drain plug and used an external filter like the engine uses. GM went and buried the filter in the Equinox transmission so deep that you can't service it. Probably others too, but it's the one I know about.
The special russian way has saved the day again :-D But it was very temporary, we all knew that. I'm really supprised that the transmission oil pump was still alive. That filter can't have been replaced in years, lack of maintenance :-(. I bet they didn't get all the other problems fixed, the computer was not too happy.
It’s the same in the UK, all ‘technicians’ want to do these days, is fit new parts! Real motor engineers, like myself, through necessity, find a way to get cars, trucks and lorries back on the road with sometimes a ‘Battlefield Repair’ being the only solution due to time constraints and non availability of items or services. Great channel Ivan, I’m hooked👍🏻🙂.
You can even make an advanced version 1. Take an plastic sponge from kitchen 2. find 4 inches of pipe and drill some holes to it 3. cut an X with a knife in the horizontal direction in the middle of the sponge 4. push the pipe inside the sponge 5. connect and hose to the pipe and the hole for the filter. 6. Pour some ATF to the sponge before installing the pan. Good as new.
Well done Ivan. That's what I call on the spot judgement call. I have never done an emergency fix on a trans, but you have to do what needs to be done. And it worked.
I'm the seat belt guy since I've seen a lot of people dead that wouldn't be dead if they had one on. Your face looks perfect as it is. Good vid on the Trans issue by the way. I'm the old fart that cares. LOL
CVT transmissions are very sensitive to fresh fluid. You cannot forget fluid changes if you have one of these. I think it is another way manufacturers want you to not only have to service them more frequently but also know those that do not, will need a new one every 100K. Stealerships and automakers 👎🏻
Sure I can. Here in the good ole' USA, manufactures have decided that transmissions are too difficult for the end user to service so they make it as hard as possible and claim "filled for life". Which is a line of BS, of course. If you read the manual, it says if the vehicle is used for police work, towing, or similar applications it should be checked and changed regularly. I think this guy using it as a work vehicle qualifies.
No parts required. One part removed. 300,000 without regular maintenance. I just bought a Pentastar 3.6 and it seems to be engineered well. 6 quart oil pan, high compression, 305 HP, 27 MPG and used in Mercedes cars. Awesome video and emergency repair. I don't have the required titanium stones for that repair.
Very cool, did not know that. Have a 3.6 in the wife’s Town&Country, love it. Awesome power, smooth, excellent gas mileage, and easy on oil (doesn’t use any, unlike a lot of modern engines it seems)
Great job Ivan, thinking outside the box. In a SHTF event that is what we are going to have to do. I love your work. Happy, safe Holidays. GOD BLESS!!!
That was a brilliant temporary fix. I don’t think I would have thought of it. Where I live I’m lucky that there is an auto parts store on every corner, even a 24 hour one not too far away. Good video!
thank you MR Macgyver ,this is nice to watch you can do this temporary fix knowing the foundation of he system plus this can confirm if the transmission has damages or not .
Good job, I finished up my career in mechanics in the mining industry. We had to keep the fleet rolling at any cost. Did a lot of meatball surgery to keep them running.
McIvan did it again. A mechanic genus. Can’t wait for another vid like that. I was seating on the edge of a radiator support frame while I am taking notes (mentally). Excellent work.
Nice fix, I would of wrote the same thing on invoice you try to have an open mind that people are good but you just never know when it comes to blame game. Plus you have it on video. Solid repair
Nice that you got them back on the road. Amazing that it worked with how noisy the pump was. I'd be willing to bet the fluid has never been changed in that. I think manufacturers are trying to prevent people from adding/checking their own fluid because transmissions (especially cvt's) are picky about having the right fluid and amount put in them, some people don't realize that. On a side note, this makes me miss my 98 F-150 I had, it had a drain plug in the pan and in the torque converter, changing the fluid was easy on that. Then the bean counters decided the drain plugs were not needed and did away with them. I give you a lot of credit for pulling the fluid pan in a parking lot like that being so close to the ground.
Needs must when needs must 👍👍 I would have done exactly the same in an emergency it maybe a bodge but what a bodge top man 🔧🔧👍👍🤗🤗. Gary...... England 🇬🇧
DUD.... you gotta what you gotta do when you're on the road...and you're right about the russian way, like we say down here in spanish "ruso" when you have to jerry rig anything to make it work while you find the right solution, but good tip.... you're the best.. tunning all your vids... Cheers from Guatemala...
I love this mechanics. I had a guy fabricate on the spot a piece of metal to be able to hold the belt tensioner in place. Because, the bolt had broken in the motor body. Great going man!
Great on the hoof fix there. Got the customer going and positive feedback. I wouldn't have had a clue personally, so extra impressed myself. Experience is all. Thanks :)
Awesome improvisation! Hope she returns to your shop to get the filter installed, you do excellent work. I would have done the same but here on Oahu, there's an auto parts store on almost every corner that's open Sundays and Holidays.
Great idea, many people would have replaced the transmission. You proved that the transmission was good and she made the trips she needed to saving the cost of towing and a rental. Repairs like this happen on farms every day.
For a business...the van is a write-off. For my personal vehicle...I would have NEVER gotten into that situation in the 1st place. YOU DID GREAT IVAN!!!
